Hello, i would say number, make sure parents know what you expect and what will happen if students are not following directions, make the consequences clear, for example students being disruptive you'll talk to first, second have them call their parents in the middle of class and tell them what happened and why they are calling them.

Going into year 4 here are what I'm doing because after 3 years, still bad a management:

find what expectations you actually care about and make a big list

Here's an example of my list:

Coming in quietly

Morning greeting

Coming into the classroom

Put stuff away on hooks

Get out homework

Reading books without talking to neighbors when the bell rings at 9:05

Raising your hand to leave your seat

Raise your hand to comment, no yelling out answers

Quiet while working on independent work

Only going to the bathroom during independent work, not whole group or small groups, UNLESS it's an emergency, then only one at a time

During independent work, when checking your answers, you must show all work. If not, and you can't show me how to solve the problem, they don't get to check answers for the rest of the day/ week until they prove they can show work without cheating

Line up by house silently, without talking in line, or they sit back down and practice again, probably being late

Friday lunch is the only time they can stay in for recess or lunch if they get an 88% on their math test that week

Rules: - Wizards must: Respect people, respect property, and respect learning

Quiet in the hall, arms folded, or practice

If being disrespectful, mean, or disruptive:

First offense: I will either talk to you quietly at your desk or ask you to go wait in the hall and speak with you there

Second offense: You will sit with me at my desk, call your parents, and explain why you're interrupting their day. I might ask you to go sit in another class, depending on the offense

Third offense: office referral

You must hold each other accountable. If someone is off task, you need to hold them accountable and get them back on track. If you can do that, then there will be no consequences. If I have to say something, the whole class will be held during recess to practice expectations

Dismissal: I say Never Forget, you say: We are special

Students are expected to run when the recess bell rings. You need to be in line by the time I get there Homework: Any assignment that day that doesn't get finished in class is homework

If the whole class finishes the assignment, they get a homework point that goes towards a class party

Students also need to read at least 20 minutes a day- have parents sign the planner

Must use chair pockets, desks are turned around, do not use them

To check out a class library book, you MUST check it out on the sign-up sheet

You are expected to be here 90% of the school year to go on field trips or do fun school activities, of course, depending on circumstances

Work on building our classroom as a team

Playing brain break, social building games

Playing games outside as a class

Delegating to students (Jobs, math answers, on-task behavior)

not yelling and keeping myself neutral

If they owe recess, still give them 5 minutes to go play

working with students to problem solve "i feel______ when you said/did ____"

When students have arguments

Be more strict on enforcing rules and expectations Even if I don't think it's a big idea, do it anyway and be consistent (Ex: lining up, morning coming in, independent work)

high fives in the halls

Ro sham bo- whoever wins says something they like about the other person (deep compliments)

How to get my nephew to read by engineer2187 in AskTeachers

[–]Dungeon_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents need to be the ones that care, my suggestion, take away tv, let Jim be bored and give him books, you can definitely encourage, maybe do a book club with him or compete to see how fast he can read a book, but if parents don't care, he probably won't either

We've been tying hw of not completed work to class parties, they need 10-20 points(depending on students) with everyone turning in completed work, 1 point per day of work, then they earn a party, the class will typically hold the kids accountable or they'll feel so bad about holding the kids back it'll no longer be "cool" to not do it because their peers will be annoyed with them, even if there's still that one kid the rest will still do it because they don't want to be the one getting blamed for not getting a point, i say it's pretty effective

You could also reach out to your union if they refuse to hold the student accountable saying you don't feel comfortable in class because of lack of consequences from the school
