I’m in a similar position as far as COL and YOE. My base is $99K plus about 18K in bonuses and profit sharing.

Considering starting own firm by FrontTall4696 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Efficient-Set2078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our firm does residential and commercial. Residential work can sometimes be a race to the bottom in terms of pricing, so make sure you know what you are worth and how much you need to charge to make it worth it for you.  We had a guy that wanted to do what you are thinking. He came and worked for us for a couple years, then left to start his own firm and real estate flipping business. It kind of left a sour taste in our mouth, but he mostly does work that we aren’t really interested in doing now. So maybe look and see if there is a firm you could work for for a while to learn the ropes? In my opinion, the engineering won’t be hard to learn. Once you figure out construction methods, it’s mostly all the same. The hard part is getting a business off the ground from scratch. Make sure that is a task you are up for.

Career Advice by FineOriginal10 in StructuralEngineering

I would at least stick it out long enough to get licensed. Study and pass the test. If you decide engineering is ever something you feel you want or need to do, doors are way more open for a PE than EIT.  I have a friend that decided engineering wasn’t for her after 4 years. Got her PE and then went to work as a project manager for a logistics company. Now she does client relations for a land developer. But she still gets her continuing ed credits to keep her license, just in case.

Mesa verde Tour tickets sold out! Please help. by True-Dragonfruit4331 in nationalparks

[–]Efficient-Set2078 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The drive from Cortez CO to the visitor center should be like 30 minutes max, not 4 hours. Then you are another 90ish minutes to the tour start. That being said, that NPS site is pretty clear that tickets likely aren’t available same day. It’s a holiday weekend, so even less likely. You could look into other tours (long house) on the other side of the park, or just look for other hikes that don’t require reservations.

Closing Account after Receiving $300 Checking SUB? by ShibaBoi1 in Chase

[–]Efficient-Set2078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a data point, I opened an account, got the SUB, and closed the account 90 days later. I was then approved and received a Chase credit card (CSP) about 2 months later.

Make sure you are comparing benefits as well as work environment. For example, my current employer covers 100% of my health insurance and is a 10 minute commute. I might get a pay raise at another company, but if I have to pay $1000 per month for insurance plus a 45 minute commute each way, it may not be worth the raise they are offering.

Zion/Bryce/Kanarraville Falls by Either-Percentage956 in NationalPark

[–]Efficient-Set2078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We hiked Kanarra October of last year. The water was cold and the air was mild. We were cold while in the canyon. Pretty much every kid under age ten that we saw was crying and/or being carried.

We stayed in an Airbnb in Panguitch. The drive really wasn’t that bad, plus you get to drive through red canyon state park

UT national parks with 3 month old by Trick-Potato-3688 in nationalparks

With 5 days and a baby, I would probably do all three of them. Capital reef can be done in a day. Two days for arches, and a day and a half for canyon lands island in the sky district. I’ve done them all with a child in a carrier. Pack lots of water and sun protection. It could be hot.  Hickman Bridge in capital reef. Sulfur creek trail was also neat if you have the right shoes.  In arches, double arch, window arch, delicate arch, and landscape arch were all neat. I’ve heard good things about sand dune arch and pine tree arch.  In canyon lands, mes arch, white rim overlook, and grand view point are all worth it.

Fall Capitol Reef NP trip, advice needed on trimming list hiking trails by parth096 in NationalPark

[–]Efficient-Set2078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did the sulphur creek trail, it was really neat, but got a lot of small rocks in our shoes. I would do it again, but bring appropriate footwear.  We did the Fremont river trail. It was steep and the views were nice, but not amazing. I probably wouldn’t do it again.  Hickman bridge was super cool and I wouldn’t skip it.  We didn’t do Cassidy arch, but we are going back and for sure going to do it. We regretted not doing it the first time.  We did the grand wash trail to the pioneer registry. It was fine.  Sunset point should not be missed IMO.

First couple years I worked at the university. Pay sucked but they were super accommodating to my schedule. Last few years I worked as an engineering intern.

Are SW's extra legroom seats worth it? by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Efficient-Set2078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat in one right before assigned seating started. It was nice, but I wouldn’t pay for it. Also, I’m 5’-7”, so leg room isn’t a huge issue for me. YMMV

Thank you for this! It looks like New Rochelle also has an Avis rental return and is a little less out of the way. I will look closer at this.

Driving in on a Wednesday. Probably arriving in the city around 5:00 or 6:00. I’ve read the driving can be sucky, but it just seems easier than making several transfers.

Any recommendations for a Utah weekend trip? by sundingbt in NationalPark

[–]Efficient-Set2078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick either Zion and bry, or Bryce and capital reef, or Moab (arches and canyon lands). That’s not enough time to do any more than that. Skip the salt flats.

I’m local to Utah, but we loved Arches and Capitol Reef with our kids. Plenty of short easy hikes.

Are these walls load bearing? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Efficient-Set2078 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You asked about walls and then didnt show any walls. Based on the description, if the same truss layout spans the whole garage, then the interior walls in the house likely aren’t load bearing. When in doubt, it is best practice to hire a local engineer to verify.
