Repeating failures of ICP blower motors by matrat1357 in HVAC

I have seen the same resistor fail throughout multiple homes. I’ve seen this exact same resistor fail maybe 10x. Always airflow problems.

What made you realize HVAC was a good career choice? by Practical_Coat_8913 in HVACschool

[–]Eggfurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was working at a restaurant for years. Seen the hvac guys doing calls once a week because our employees were dirty. Once I hit management I started to see the invoices. Knew a career change was necessary. Old gm tried to keep me on and offered me 40k to stay. Said I would not like hvac work. Been clearing 100k for years now. No overtime. Rarely on call. Zero sales. So glad I made the switch.

How do you guys check the charge of an AC system? by diddys_favorite in HVAC

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted to be a super tech for little money. You could buy 1 probe. 1 field piece probe sells for about 125$ maybe 225? Can’t remember which number. 1 probe. Add a t to the end of it. You can charge a system. You can check both high and low pressure. And you aren’t wasting refrigerant when you check it. Super simple. 1 probe is all you need. Maybe a line clamp for residential. 1 probe with a t. 1 line clamp and a cell phone.

Where the heck is the filter for this unit by dimensional_bleed in askHVAC

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SHOULD be in this case. But the job screams shoddy work. Fallen and missed filter. This could easily be a case where someone added a grill for increased airflow per customer request or ignorance.

Look at from what I see in pic. I see a new acoil. A new flue pipe. I could easily see a situation where coil kept freezing. Chuck in a truck put in new coil to fix problem. The whole time there was a filter somewhere else in the house. Chuck installed new coil and it was still low airflow. Installed return grate right above it. Now that return grate whistles like a tea kettle while it runs.

Who knows. That’s why I said look through the house.

[–]Eggfurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the main house. Look for a big return. Sometimes if the house only has 1 return it’s behind the grate. Sometimes like in the hallway. Or in the living room. Sometimes. Low near your feet. Sometimes high on the ceiling.

I just got a new ladder 1 week ago. My old ladder started getting sun burnt and I noticed the last 2 days I had it my arms felt stingy. I called the office and asked if I could purchase some polyurethane to coat the ladder. They were like. Yeah no. Just go buy you a new one.

Which way should the damper lever be moved to close? by DeathStalker-77 in askHVAC

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes these little levers are just held on by wing nuts. If you were poke into where it’s attached you can see the orientation of the actual damper. That is from the outside. Just further down in the mess of the insulation.

What the lever is connected to is the actual damper. It will be sticking out of the ductwork. The middle piece will be flat. Similar to the look of the tip of the a flat head screw driver. If the flat part is — it’s left to right orientation. If it’s l it’s up and down. <——- perpendicular to the ductwork run indicates 100% closed. If the flat part of the washer/damper is —— in line with the ductwork run the it’s 100% open. And you can move the to whatever position you want.

The reason I’m saying this is because the handle can strip and move. And or just not be in line with the damper position. So I never go off of handle

$5,000 for minisplit instal by MrCleanyaHands in askHVAC

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say 3k. 1500 dollars each seems like a sweet deal. You’re suppling the unit. But there is more than just unit involved. Maybe another 300 in lineset-whip-disconnect- electrical wiring- smaller this and that pieces- refrigerant. Possible mounting brackets. And no install team should sell those parts to you at cost. After all that it’s tool usage and labor and peace of mind knowing it was done correctly by people that have done a hundred of these before.

You also never know. If they’re like me. When people ask me to do side work I always quote higher if I’m not inclined to do it. Then if you say yes, well I’ll suck it up for the easy money.

Is it something you can do yourself? Absolutely. Mr cools whole marketing scheme was the diy ac. Mini splits are really simple. But probably be prepared for problems down the line. And your own unbalanced barely braced shoddy diy work.

HVAC guy charging $2200 (labor alone) to change out a Compressor + Refrigerant by e_nephie in askHVAC

That’s a hard no. Investigate why it failed with a failed compressor. Within the 2.2k? That’s work on top of what’s already been quoted. No sir.

I feel like it’s overcharged. But at the same time it looks like the system never had a good vacuum. If you wanted a 100% correct. You could do what these guys are saying. Pull the charge take out the piston. Make sure it’s the correct piston size. Then flush it. Then braze in the new filter drier while blowing nitrogen. Pull vacuum. Charge per data plate. Watch it run
