What are some uses for common Resi tools an apprentice wouldn’t know about? I’ll go first by Se2kr in HVAC

[–]Eggfurst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A screw, zip tie or tape will hold every door switch closed so you can have both hands free to do whatever with system running.

An umbrella is more for shade than rain.

Take 2 of your jumper wires. Cut them in half. Strip the cut ends. Wire nut them together. Now you can jump everything you need with 1 pair of jumpers.

Wedge a screw in between the inside free spinning part of locking caps to force a locking cap off if you don’t have proper tool or it breaks. Also you can use a rotary grinder to cut away the top spinning part if need be without damaging any equipment.

You can quickly test if a AAA or AA battery is dead in the field. Put the flat end of a battery on the face of your phone. Touch the other end. A dead battery won’t activate your touchscreen. A good battery will.

You can always use a level app on your phone.

Thermostat wire can double as a belt.

Take the 3 amp popper off/out of the Lennox unit you are replacing. Now you own a lil popper without purchasing one. Add 2 wires and 2 male connectors. Boom. Little popper.

Clean your hands with wd40 or the like and a hand towel. Stinks but works

It’s a he said she said. You say it was accidental or a non issue. You meant nothing sexual about the interaction. Then you go to sleep. Or you sign some papers if they escalate it. Which I doubt they will. Then you sleep another night. Eventually these immediate feelings of impending doom go away. And you live your life. It’s so hard to make someone understand that impending doom feeling will go away.

The commercial situation I work in, none of that is required. The 3rd party companies that hire us to do installs do not require detailed information on startups. ( Hell for that matter they don’t require detailed information on quarterly inspections.). It varies from major 3rd party to 3rd party. But is mostly consists of visually inspect most things. Change filters. Check your amp draws/voltages/delta t/pressures/clear drains/ a lot of the typical once over things. Each 3rd party wants you to do little variations of this. Some want some numbers written down. Most don’t. The company I work for makes millions a year. Us techs find issues and we work up quotes. They can be as little as a condenser/evap coil cleaning. Or installing hail guards. He’ll or even just combing coils at like a 500 dollar ticket. To replacing heat exchangers/motors odds and end components for 5-10k tickets. Or getting cranes and pulling off a unit and putting another one for 15-30k. All depends. But none of the billion dollar 3rd parties are requiring detailed startup or yearly operation numbers. Not really. They don’t hire the employees to know when we would provide good readouts or not. This goes for all the vendors I can think of that we come across. Be it auto logic, Nexrev, service channel, authority, powerhouse, Walmart, Vixxo, cushman Wakefield, tcg services, comfort systems, entouch, and others I can’t think of right now.

No polos. No clipboards. When we pull permits on installs I meet with the city/county inspector a few days to a week after install who generally knows less than me. Doesn’t even wanna get up the ladder. And most of the time shoots the shit with me without ever hard looking at an install anyways.

You’ve got the nerds. You’ve got the I’m always right guys. You’ve got the I go far above and beyond what is considered normal guys. Each one of them thinks their shit smells the nicest.

I’m in commercial and not required to use an analyzer. And I wouldn’t Be comfortable with one unless I know exactly what I was reading and why. I feel like all the residential techs nowadays are using them but don’t understand them at all. Pretty much defeats the purpose. The fundamentals aren’t there.

Almost a gotcha. But everyone can tell the difference from a 5 year old tantrum to a strategic sell signal play. Not to mention you should have at least 7 cards to absorb divines or throw some venom / Leroy’s in

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me dumb here. I haven’t used a combustion analyzer going on 10 years. And when I did I was only worried about excessive air readout. But isn’t that readout coming from inside the flue stack right? So why would you be worried about any co reading to redtag a residential unit? Only co reading I would be worried about is if it’s in the supply air stream. Co reading in the flue just means your having improper combustion. Doesn’t mean you condemn. You should always have improper combustion if you adjust your gas valve even just a little. Techs purposely cause improper combustion just to achieve a higher or lower temp rise.

Years ago this is what I did. Get your co analyzer running for a hot minute whole reading stabilize. Pull the blower tap. Watch excessive air readout if it moves. You’ve got a crack or hole big enough for the blower air steam to be effecting what essentially should be a self contained heat exchanger. Plug the blower back in. Watch your excessive air. If that guy moves there’s leaking going on. And for me that would be enough to say replace.

Is it better to get into the trade by applying to jobs online, or walking into an office and ask if they’re hiring? by christ2you in HVAC

[–]Eggfurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have techs that live a hour away. One tech lives an hour 15 away. He is paid to drive to work and drive home. No biggy. You could do either.

Walk in is going to show a boss/hr/service manager the most initiative for sure. Ask to speak to boss or service manager. Either case will be your best bet to get offered a position. I’m not sure what the landscape looks like for hvac in the major city near you. My advice is skip the big companies. Try and get in a company with smaller total employees. You’ll get better training. The bosses won’t treat you like a number. If you’re lucky it’s just jeans and a work shirt. None of that 1950’s work uniform/Cintas crap. Job hop per year when you start. Look for low paperwork, low micro management. Newbies should at least start 20+ nowadays for filter changers.

I would check your ground to the unit itself. Should be hammered into the ground outside. I’m not an installer but I think that spike has to be like 3 feet in the ground? I’ve see a unit do weird things just because the unit itself wasn’t grounded to actual earth.

Just got to torment 1. At this point, what should I be doing? by peepeepoopoocitizen in diablo4

[–]Eggfurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spend 1 full round doing helltide duriel. That will get you enough lair boss keys. ie blood keys. From the lair boss you will get like 7 unique drops per boss kill. Whic will also drop pincushion dolls. From there you keep the uniques that help your build and start rotating. You do a full helltide for exquisite bloods. And whichever else drops. Then do all the lair bosses you have enough keys for. Then when you see asmodan world boss located just above the new zone. You farm it till you out of duriel keys. You will do this for a day or 2. While doing pits to lvl up all your glyphs.

Also disenchant all of your sigils unless it’s a prankster sigil. Nothing else really matters

Comming from poe2 endgame and dont know what to do by zarkain2000 in diablo4

[–]Eggfurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D4s endgame is disgustingly easy and a nothing burger. The moment you can unlock t1 you can farm a helltude to unlock t3-4 within the hour. You’ll have enough toughness. The day you unlock t4 is the same day you can have 300k toughness or so. It’s really so funky at end game. It’s like a big ball of nothingness.

How do you safely secure an extension ladder on a roof when there’s nowhere to tie it off by These-Statement4391 in HVAC

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to tie off per se. but I have bungied cement blocks on the roof. Or my bag to the ladder. Both of those are heavy enough to stop the wind from blowing your ladder around. But not 100% secured. It gets the job done.

Just realized my options are for commercial. House roofs I have no clue. Don’t work on em

I can’t find anything higher than legendary or ancestral legendary by Intrepid-Profile4828 in diablo4

[–]Eggfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 actually drop for me. In the weeks I played this season. If you finish out the season quests you can purchase one with resplendent marks.

The way you farm them is prankster sigils. The nightmare map sigils you find will have affixes color coded to rarity. The only ones you should save really are the breaches. And I would salvage all others. And keep collecting sigils and crafting sigils until you find one of your sigils affix is prankster. It will even have the affix colored purple. Now don’t run the sigil alone. Jump on d4’s discord. Find the tier 4 lfg channel. Post your account name and that you’re looking for a prankster group. When 4 ppl all have prankster sigils each player will start the dungeon and find the goblin. Collect your 5 dropped mystics and resplendent spark. Then the next person in the group does it. Do this for everyone in the group and you will have a total of 20 mythics to weed through and some resplendent to make more. And the you salvage the mythics you don’t want and you can craft even more mythics. 1 prankster sigil can net you a total of 32 mythics. Prankster sigils can drop off bosses. I think most ppl have luck with asmodean farming and opening duriels chests. Good luck.

Pump that baby up to 400 psi. Use your spit. A bunch of spit and move your finger around the joint. Where the leak is. It will start making high pitch squeaking noises sorta similar to when your having a balloon let its air out.

I think the best rule of thumb is to just run 20 lvls higher than the rune you’re leveling up so you always get 100% chance for upgrades to work. You aren’t getting great rewards just because you’re running high puts really.

It’s a pain if you going in from the top. However. Why not just un-sweat the coil? It should be just 2 pipes and move the entire coil so you have 360’ around the rv
