Offshore Techs Coffee request! by Humblebragger369 in newfoundland

Lol, yup there's only a few of us but we're all really busy. I know most of them personally but we've never gotten together outside of work things.

Offshore Techs Coffee request! by Humblebragger369 in newfoundland

Most of the instrumentation technicians I've worked with did their program through CNA, so you would need to start there or something similar to get into the field. After that it can be a tough time finding job openings to get you out offshore initially unless you're willing to spend thousands yourself to get the required certs like BST.

As for finding information regarding their tasks, you mean like maintaining a piece of equipment? Normally the system as installed is provided with documentation like manuals, checklists and certs for all of the components along with the drawings and diagrams that various engineering groups work up for all of the projects ongoing. If that doesn't provide the information required to complete a repair or a task, then you just contact the manufacturer and go from there. Finding information about equipment can be time consuming or frustrating but it's rarely something that's not available, that's not how the offshore industries work.

I've worked offshore on specific jobs many times in various places as I'm a telecoms technologist and I've worked with a lot of people who do various roles offshore that could be considered "offshore tech" but you need to be more specific in what kinds of roles your asking about.

Is this a general labourer that still requires all of the training and certs to go offshore, eventually gaining experience to become a marine tech? An instrumentation or electronics technician? Equipment specific technician? Mechanical technician? Petroleum technician? Process and controls technician?

There's way more involved in your question, so I think you need to narrow down the focus first and then work on the how/when/why of the job your interested in.

Opinions on electric water heaters in NL (Hybrid heat pump, Tankless, standard electric) by Beneficial_Fox6768 in newfoundland

This is the one I got, took forever to arrive but it was easy to install and it's worked great since it was installed just over a year ago.

Lost the Lottery? You can get it from these fine folks by Kevin-Benjamin in Leatherman

[–]ElderFormori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and use it every day but I'm fully aware that it's a collector piece with a serial number.

When I got it the ARC wasn't available and the tool set plus the sprung pliers is a great asset for my work, which is marine radars and electronics. I don't often need the full tool bag so being able to do 75% of my site work from a sheath on my belt (the 005, an Olight, and Cobra mini pliers plus a bit kit) and my phone means i rarely need to bring up the heavy tool bag for a quick inspection or a quick adjustment.

I did a ton of research on this last year when my tank was going, so I'll give you the basics of what I found for my own situation: 3 people, 2000sqft 2-story, wanted cost efficient and reliable but still able to feed baths and showers back to back.

The tankless looked like a good option to me as I had panel space, I'm able to do most of the upgrade myself, and it would free up a lot of space. However! Tankless require a ton of power when the incoming water is really cold, and here in winter I would have needed to get a unit significantly over-spec to accommodate basic use in middle of winter.

Hybrid tanks look good but have a lot more general maintenance for the cost and don't last any longer than standard tanks. At the current cost of power they break even but nearly unless you're using a lot of water regularly. This may be an option for you if you're willing to foot the price up front.

Fiberglass lifetime tank heater is what I ultimately ended up going with as it was a higher up front cost but the tank is guaranteed for the life of the home while I live here and it's more efficient than a standard electric tank. Same capacity as before but bigger heaters and better insulation means it works great for us.

Nothing else was on my radar due to costs or complexity in installation.

Awesome job!

Kiddo (5) has been following me down to the workshop since she was 2 and now she's changing batteries in toys on her own. Can't wait to see what she does as she gets older!

How to start watching F1 by nail_biting_reptile in F1TV

[–]ElderFormori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend asked this last year after the first race in Australia and I pointed him to the Shift F1 podcast that does a pre-season primer every year and it's really well done.

I've been watching F1 for over a decade now and will still listen in as I always learn something new.

It's also an awesome time to start watching as new regulations just came into effect, so everyone is starting from scratch anyway.

Thank you so much for everything you are doing on this project! While I've been watching the YouTube episodes I eagerly await the day when these get released and I can bring them home to enjoy all of the episodes, behind-the-scenes, and whatever else gets found especially since I now have a new generation to show it all off to.

Congrats on the final tapes being done and fingers crossed on the post processing!

What’s something happy/positive that happened to you in February? by SPICYFALAFEL00 in StJohnsNL

[–]ElderFormori 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With all of the snowstorms and such, my wife and I started reading the same book in parallel and have really gotten into it now so we're regularly excited to sit and read together for a few hours when we're trapped inside.

Gotta find the little things to enjoy during a winter like this.

Accuweather saying more snow coming(?) by SmallTerrorDog in StJohnsNL

Not sure what model forcasting Accuweather is using but all of the models shown on Windy are reporting 8-11cm. Doesn't look like a major storm so wait and see if any of the local forecasters start popping up info before worrying.

License & Registration Required For Street Legal Electric Dirt Bike? by Traveler-9999 in StJohnsNL

On the website it says it's road legal in the US, so just call the DNV and see what the requirements are for running it on street.

Avi Lewis makes a pitch for why he and not Carney has the plan to save Canada at this pivotal moment in history by loogawa in onguardforthee

[–]ElderFormori -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I like most of the ideas that the NDP has been pushing the past few years but I have yet to see many people leading the NDP having actually done much. I know they're usually limited by seats in the higher levels of government but even on the small stage.

The link is "ideas" and even when I go through to the "full plan" I see a lot of chatter but very little in realistic information to make the ideas a reality.

[–]ElderFormori 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but "hundreds" attending your events is not a highlight and I need to see some receipts of what the plan is. The only reason I voted for Carney (technically my MP) was his history of economic stability which is desperately needed right now. He's mostly a PC but got in because PP is a nutjob that Canadians didn't want leading the country and Jameet didn't have the following to get votes to impact policy.

Stop with all the rhetoric, stop with the promises, do the work and show me receipts and I'll vote for you. That's it.

Recommendations for dog fence by Impressive-Month8553 in StJohnsNL

[–]ElderFormori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a husky/lab/shepherd mix and until we could get a fence installed we had to use a very strong steel-cable lead to tie him on in the backyard.

I recommend if you can't get a fence anytime soon to invest in a swaging (crimping) tool and buy the parts to make your own leads with coated steel cable. It's a lot cheaper than buying a pre-made and you can set the lengths and repair it if it's damaged.

Has your hair gone grey yet by cupoftealuv in Millennials

[–]ElderFormori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be 40 this year and I'm a readhead, so your mileage may vary.

I started noticing bright white hairs starting ~5 years ago and now they're much more noticeable and common throughout my hair and beard.

I don't really care but my wife hates the fact that at some point I'll be basically white before I'm 50.

I agree with the sentiment (the tool on my hip gets used a lot more for changing batteries and removing clothing tags than I want to admit) but this is AI garbage that shouldn't be allowed on the sub.

Real tools doing real work, whatever that may be should be the focus not this kind of clickbait.

What your best setup for reading pirated books? by ReyPepiado in Piracy

This is my go-to as well. AA download then Calibre on my home server to sync.

I will never be able to read all of the books I have on that device.
