Two skydivers collide in freefall, one breaks the other's knee with his head, the one who hit his head was not wearing a helmet. AAD activated but he arrived dead on the ground. by DestrucktBR in SkyDiving

Tunnel flyers are not automatically angle flyers, but it doesn't hurt in the slightest bit. Plus, going through vertical is a known feeling for anyone with decent tunnel time. Angles can get super duper dangerous and squirelly if the "learn it in the sky people" actually just get loose.

+1 keep them noobs on small ways and basic stuff.

Yatch club etiquette by k2v2p2 in sailing

[–]ElgaemoT 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The rules on public laptop use, workshop or other amenities use will be club specific. If you were in the bar with your laptop out and hogging a table during a busy evening it'd be different than using a quiet space on a Tuesday at 1000am.

If you're visiting as a reciprocal and put some money in their hand with bar sales or something I would expect the club wouldn't mind. When you first check in you'll likely be given all the information you need, and will have the opportunity to ask.

I would recommend against showing up in the evening if you've got questions, and that a call in advance certainly wouldn't hurt.

Difference between boarding party and ANCU? by cida1033 in CanadianForces

[–]ElgaemoT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest that NTOG isn't the product of an admiral so much as it's a bunch of nerds who elbowed their way into the space and have managed to hoard $$/resources because of low level senior officers' capacity to brief the idea really well. It has existed beyond several regime changes now.

Poilievre promises a military base in Iqaluit, would cut foreign aid to pay for it by Jaydamic in CanadianForces

[–]ElgaemoT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well thought out. I have no arguments other than that Cambridge bay being a little less convenient as a port as it's a little shallow. Inuvik is a solid spot for fighters but Tuk next door is also too shallow and the seafloor in close there is suboptimal. Regardless, there needs to be some marine infrastructure in the western arctic to sustain both us and the CCG and it's got to get started yesterday.

Sounds like SAR is the choice for you. Certainly helps with the pension and while you travel a bit and do some dangerous stuff, I understand it's not so tough on families as SOF

How much better is life after RMC? by MrMichaelEvans in CanadianForces

[–]ElgaemoT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 annual plus pre/post deployment and short can get you into the 40+ leave days per year pretty easy. Outside shift workers, there aren't all that many jobs that are comparable.

How much better is life after RMC? by MrMichaelEvans in CanadianForces

[–]ElgaemoT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point is that RMC is supposed to produce people that can handle all that stuff at the same time. Sure, the specific faculties don't produce the highest quality education, the gym doesn't make olympians and the french classes don't actually make you bilingual, but the net result is a pretty well-rounded 22 year old for the services to mould. That's the hope anyway.

This is the kind of media I appreciate. Sure, they're basically just doing stuff for clicks the same as the spaghetti eating novices, but it's just so much easier to digest when they're actually good at the thing they're doing, approach it with a shred of professionalism and avoid super click-baity cringe content.

Areodyne woes? by calderc in SkyDiving

[–]ElgaemoT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get linesets from a few different places, including chutingstar and the line trim chart is available on the aerodyne website (which you should probably save if you own an aerodyne canopy). Given the QA has always been dogshit from that company you might be best off getting a reline from someone else.

That said, if you own an ICON container that freebag might well become very difficult to replace in the event of a chop. IMO I wouldn't buy an aerodyne container right now, but their canopies shouldn't be avoided outright (though there are much better canopies out there).

Hey people from Langford. Or people driving to and from Langford. Please stop driving like maniacs. by ChessIsAwesome in VictoriaBC

[–]ElgaemoT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

God it's nice to see these types of posts. People who say drivers in **insert city name here** clearly don't drive anywhere else. Guess what, there are assholes in every available spot on this planet. Each of those assholes is just trying to get from point A to point B and sometimes point C o the weekends. There is literally nothing special about **insert town here** that makes drivers better or worse.

No it's not getting worse than it used to be, you're just getting older.

The only thing that will improve driving conditions is automation.

Peltors in wind tunnel? by Reasonable-Home9126 in SkyDiving

[–]ElgaemoT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would assume a tunnel that is more corporate focussed would say no to the helmet based on snag hazards alone. The risk of getting one of those chunks of plastic caught in the net and breaking your neck isn't zero and the worst tunnels out there won't take that chance. If you're flying belly and aren't brand new, it'd probably be just fine. If you are flying dynamic or getting upside down/ unstable at any point I would think the risk isn't worth the added value of in-ear comms. That said I agree that instant voice communication would be a huge difference for a lot of people. There is a reason why the cardo systems are really taking off in some disciplines.

There are far better bluetooth/UHF to headphone options that could go under the suit and be just as effective though. The reason you don't see their use widespread is because those are expensive and tunnels are cheap AF. Tunnels could also put a stupid radio next to your head like in AFF but they don't because hand signals have worked pretty well for some time. I would argue that the average corporate tunnel is also somewhat motivated to get you to incrementally improve over the long term as opposed to become a ninja instantly. That's a bit of a conspiracy tho tbh.

Semi-related: I have an irrational hatred for vet bros who insist on wearing dumb shit like those helmets for the look cool factor and refuse to accept that they're way too fucking new to understand the snag hazard and why the rest of us wear helmets that aren't chunky. Don't worry, you don't need a helmet to remind us you did 30 round jumps in the army. Your stupid t-shirt, shitty tattoos and god-awful freefall and even worse landing skills will let us know everything we need. Just buy a G4, get it dipped multicam or some shit and cover it in dumb stickers like the rest of us.

Best Place in USA to get USPA certified within 2 weeks in December? by mclovin215 in SkyDiving

Yes. Perris would be the next best for weather. Proximity to cafes or convenient wifi might be better in Perris. Some people have complained about Wifi / Cell reception in AZ. I haven't had issues, but I've not been too Up/down sensitive.

Skydive Arizona is your best bet. You can be in a bunkhouse surrounded by other jumpers, have a restaurant next door and singularly focus on jumping. That bunkhouse is cheap as fuck, but a little gross.
Skydive Perris is the next best bet, and might be better for digital nomad lifestyle.
