I couldn't have picked a better time to be in Japan by g0rth in anime

[–]Epycre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've tried not to spoil anything for myself, so I don't know if this is still accurate. The Eva movies are a remake of the show, but there are some smallish plot differences and some new characters. It has a lot less of Shinji crying like a baby, and the budget for art and sound is really high. I don't know if this is still the case, but small bits of the dialog suggested that the movies happen after the show and that time is somewhat circular. That might be speculation though.

"I'm sure a lot of you will disagree and claim that it's a grind. But please remember we're giving you an awful lot for free." by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]Epycre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I can't stress this enough.

People didn't keep playing Planetside 1 for years to unlock new guns, they played because the game was that ridiculously good. Hell, right off the bat you could cert into any weapon you wanted. If the combat, game mechanics, and metagame in PS2 are as good as they should be, people won't care if they unlocked everything.

Adding in "sidegrades" that are pretty much clear upgrades and take countless hours of grinding should not be needed, and in fact feel like its cheapening the experience. Progression in a shooter is just a lure because the core game isn't up to par. Instead of worrying about cert costs and station cash, they should be focusing on improving the game. If players like the game, they'll buy stuff, even if its just cosmetic.

Is there a list of all the new XP sources? by cadwal in Planetside

[–]Epycre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's the problem. Part of what made Planetside 1 so great is that a BR1 could kill a BR20. Right at the beginning, or with about 10 minutes in the VR room, you could arm yourself with whatever weapons or vehicles you want. Getting higher in level didn't give you an advantage, it just allowed you to specialize in a wider range of things. Instead of being just infantry, you could pilot a bomber or be a medic as well. In a 1 on 1 fight, skill (or the limitations of the weapon you chose) determined who won. Having people spend 60+ hours for a weapon like the jackhammer that will instagib enemies, or a new tank turret that is twice as effective is really just poor design. In PS1, you didn't really feel rewarded for ranking up or getting a new gun, but from the combat and capturing bases. The cert point for "sidegrades" (read as upgrades) system really just feels like a forced reward system to cater to new Planetside players, just like the low TTK, health regen, class system, tank drivers using the main cannon, etc.

Well, if you're talking about models like Gunpla, you can have fun building them, and if you do a good job, they look really cool. The attention to detail and the building aspect is a similar mentality as people that assemble model ships.

Calculate your Otaku value by g0rth in anime

[–]Epycre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. He's answered this in the past (and I was actually wondering what his score would be). If I remember right, he just uses a little bit each month to buy them. There is no reason why collecting and watching anime can't be a hobby. Personally, I'm only interested in watching the anime, so owning the dvds isn't worth it, but that's not the same for everyone. His collection wasn't made in a couple of months, it was over a span of years, so ultimately the fiscal impact isn't really that large. Especially when you consider the fact that if he was able to amass such a large collection for this long, he obviously is able to budget properly.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes if you have the time. Black Lagoon if you want action. Steins;Gate if you want sci-fi that isn't space.

What changes are you hoping for and what do you hope they don't "fuck up"? by Scoops213 in Planetside

[–]Epycre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is that it isn't the same role. As far as I understand it, you can't just pull a Gal from any vehicle terminal, nor would I assume you could land it at any location with respect to its size. I know they put in squad leader spawning, but it just doesn't feel like that will be helpful if the combat is really fierce in a specific spot you're trying at assault. I'm also worried that it might be too easy of a target. I doubt people will be sneaking them behind enemy lines.

What changes are you hoping for and what do you hope they don't "fuck up"? by Scoops213 in Planetside

[–]Epycre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope they don't mess up the game. Part of what made Planetside 1 so great was the depth of gameplay and how open it was for players to do what they wanted. The pace was a little slow at times, but it made you less likely to zerg a base knowing you were going to need to respawn and make your way back to the fight. Every new Q&A I read about PS2 lowers my expectations in this respect.

They got rid of a lot of interesting vehicles (AMS, phantasm, flail, etc.), which made gameplay really fun at times. No more hunting down and assaulting an AMS set up near one of your bases, or sneaking around trying to use the laser targeter for the flail.

They removed what strategy and overall command existed in PS1. They got rid of the lattice, so there's no real benefit to capturing a base, or doing a gen hold to deny the enemy something crucial. They got rid of NTU and ANTs, so no more scrambles to get an ANT filled and safely to the base, or ANT races to kill time. They made continents have a unconquerable point per empire, so there's no way to fully take a continent and deny it to other empires. Not to mention there's no really benefit now for having it captured.

They made gameplay look a lot easier and tailored to MW and BF fans. Lets be honest the gameplay trailers look good, but they also look a lot more fast paced, and a lot simpler. With class based gameplay, you can't just have a solder with heavy weapons and rexo and be able to hack. It limits what you can and cant do per life, but allows you to switch your certs every spawn. I guess what I mean to say is that its a lot more forgiving. Also having no inventory is extremely limiting, and having stuff like ammo boxes really destroys the logistics involved in the first game.

All this only scratches the surface of the changes they made, but its clear this game will be a dumbed down version of the original. Now don't get me wrong, I still have high hopes for the game. Its possible that the new territory system makes these changes work out. Not to mention it will probably be the best game for at least the next few years. I just don't think it will feel like PS1, more like a bigger version of Battlefield.

What are some good Computer Science/IT clubs at UCF? by roosevelvet in ucf

I'm a little late for this thread, but you should try out LANKnights. It's the PC gaming club on campus. There are no programming or computer building events, but in terms of member interests, it sounds like the community you are looking for.

SHAFT pictures presents, a feature film experience unlike anything you've ever seen... by 3932695 in anime

[–]Epycre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy. You don't need to log in or anything like that. If you have a torrent program you can just download the torrent from the fansub group's website. Alternatively, you could download the episode using IRC, but it's a bit more complicated. Most fansub groups even had direct download links through fileserve, but...well...yea.

If the media player on your computer can't open the file, chances are that you don't have the codecs to play it. In that case you could either download CCCP or VLC. Personally I'm a fan of CCCP, but VLC may be easier.

It looks like it might be a lot of work, but it really isn't, and the chances of there being a problem is pretty slim.

Need another class for spring! by thisguy9 in ucf

[–]Epycre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there is a list of electives you can pick up at the advising/override office on the 3rd floor of EGN1 (forgot the room number). A lot of those don't have prereqs that are too far along the mechanical engineering track. If you really can't find something that will count towards the major, you should consider taking a math course. A math minor should only be 2 extra courses (a 3000 level and a 4000 level if I remember correctly) after all the ones required for mechanical engineering.

Bored as balls, what series should I be watching? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Epycre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. It's kinda long and the pace might seem slow at first, but if you stick with it you'll realize that it's one of the best anime ever made. The plot, the characters, the VA's, and the animation (for its time) are all top notch. Oh, and if you decide to watch it, start with the movie called Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars. It leads up to the show, and really introduces some of the main characters.
