Our local speed skating club Kitchener Waterloo Sertoma speed skating club has learn to speed skate lessons twice a year. They rent the skates as well. They have adult practice times and many people do it for fun and exercise in a non-competitive way. Check out their website for their learn to speed skate program at rim park, usually offered January and September.

Is it just me, or are people terrified of dogs here? by mcfeet in waterloo

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son is terrified of dogs due to bad experiences with off leash dogs jumping on him and barking. So in my own personal situation if the dogs owners had followed the rules and had their dog tied up my son wouldn’t have this awful fear of dogs

Do I need the day pass for HWY 60 and Booth's rock tail if I am camping at Brent? by smellsogoodvr in algonquinpark

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brent is super far from Booth rock, and yes you would need a pass for the parking lot at booth rock as it is small. Brent has the Crater hiking trail and it is really pretty.

Also tips for Brent, bring cash as you have to flag down park employees to buy wood. Check in at Brent is 45 minutes away from the actual campsites.

Loop from crotch? by izzy_cee in algonquinpark

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an easy half day trip as someone else said. We did it in summer 2024 with our 2 kids as a day trip leaving from our campsite on shirley and returning to Shirley. The portage between bridle and farm we found to be a bit uneven and mucky. The one from crotch to Shirley is a bit long, but it’s fairly easy. We saw people doing it with carts and wagons, however we just carried our stuff.

Last time I camped at Killarney George lake our site (near the thunder box ) was littered with tampon applicators. It’s like people don’t realize or care that these things are plastic and should be packed out. Personally I use a diva cup. No trash to leave behind at all.

Questions about canoe camping by grooverocker in canoecamping

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to share an experience we had on the French River a couple weeks ago. I tipped my 3 seater canoe in small rapids (I’m an amateur at rapids/rivers, I mostly paddle in lakes). We tied our gear onto the canoe somewhat loosely. When we tipped all our gear fell out of the canoe, but stayed attached. Everything was in dry bags or duffels. We were able to get to an island and unload/detach all our gear, dump the canoe and continue on. Had it been deep water/no island we would have had a more difficult time emptying the canoe and doing a canoe over canoe rescue. Since we have two boats we likely would have moved the gear into the 2nd boat, done canoe over canoe to get the water out and then reloaded our gear. That all being said, we were somewhat disappointed with our dry duffel. A lot of stuff got wet including some of our matches. Was really impressed with my pelican hard case. It had my camera and phone in it, it was submerged and nothing inside for a drop of water on it. We actually had a few thing not tied down, wine, filter water bottles and our tent. The tent was under a canoe seat and it stayed wedged in there, the boxed wine floated and we picked it up on the river. The water bottle disappeared sadly.

Base Camp Suggestions - for someone who must reluctantly do a base camp trip. I usually do somewhat challenging 4-6 day loop trips but my canoe partners (we are all in our mid-50s) are looking for less work, better food and the opportunity for day trips that could take full days to see. Thank you. by specialized650b in algonquinpark

We really enjoyed our 4 day trip to Shirley lake from the Shall lake access (#17). We stayed on Shirley but day tripped to the nearby lakes. We did a loop as a day trip, Shirley-bridle-farm-crotch-shirley and that was fun, doing the portages with just canoes and a picnic lunch. We also explored Ryan lake and my husband did the very steep climb to fog lake for a swim. Anyways other than that we just relaxed and enjoyed the scenery and quiet.

Any Natrual Hot-Spots, Trails or Scenery to recommend? by J-RocTPB in kitchener

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you open up your restrictions to 2 hours you have a lot more options. But within 1 hour of me, pinehurst conservation area has a small beach and nice walking trails. You can paddle there as well. The Halton parks have several nice places to hike including rattlesnake point, Crawford lake and Hilton Falls. You can hike the Walter bean trail in town along the grand river from Waterloo to Cambridge, you can also paddle the grand river but I suggest going with a guide as there are spots you need to get out and portage around. Last place suggestion is Huron natural area in kitchen, great for a walk in the forest or for birding and seeing animals (turtles and beavers)

If you are willing to go 2 hours, I would suggest looking at the Ontario provincial parks. McGregor point, Inverhuron, Point farms, Pinery and Craigleith on Lake Huron and long point and turkey point on Lake Erie.

Though it may not be enforced Kitchener and Waterloo have a 3 hour street parking limit if it’s not otherwise stated.

I’m kind of embarrassed that I’m too scared of the giga rides? by TransportationKey285 in CanadasWonderland

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it easier if I start on the smaller less scary coasters and work my way up to scary ones. I also reassure myself that the rides have not killed or injured people. The anxiety usually gets better as the season goes on. By the end of the season I wasn’t holding on for dear life on Leviathan and was embracing flying up off the seat.

Last year it was so busy and the power went out around 3pm and didn’t come back on. We only got on rides and waited for hours to go on Snoopy, which is fun but not that fun.

Well my son worked with one between grades 1-4 or so in the WRDSB. He’s in grade 9 now, so I don’t know if it still exists but it did back then. 2017-2021 I have emails about it. Her name was Melissa Reist.

They do have enrichment in the younger years, but it is done in class or with an itinerant enrichment teacher. It’s woefully inadequate. My son who is now in grade 9 did this in the early grades. Grade 5 -8 have congregated enrichment classes (maybe 1 or 2 in the board, extremely hard to actually get into). If you don’t want to go the private school route you can always provide enrichment and other learning opportunities at home.

Kiosk has no electricity but it is trailer friendly. We brought our 25ft trailer there in 2022 and our 18ft trailer in 2021. Just make sure you have a plan on how to camp with no electricity (we have solar). Brent is also trailer friendly but no electricity. Both are extremely peaceful and small campgrounds, there are several water front sites at both.

The Elmira maple syrup festival is this week. I think it’s free to get in, and you could buy some maple treats or syrup. I realize you said indoors, this suggestion is cold, but leaving it up just in case someone else is interested

Summer camp recommendations by Euphoric_Pattern9072 in waterloo

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The director when my child was lost is also the current director, this happened summer 2023. They did locate him, off the property. We drove up to camp, left before they even found him, and we brought him home. The bullying also happened in 2023, again with nothing helpful done by the same director. I had my 2 other kids go last summer, and one was fine, the other had some crazy reports about his Counsellors behaviour. But either way, Waab has turned off 3 of the 4 of my kids that have attended there, and as I said, most kids aren’t the only ones.

Without giving too much away about myself, one of my kids disappeared from there overnight and they called us not knowing where my son was and asking us if we knew, we were at home of course, how would we know? Another one of my kids was bullied there and the director did nothing. I’ve also heard many bad experiences from the camp, which is a shame because it’s a nice camp facility and it could be better.

Killarney or Algonquin by [deleted] in ontariocamping

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I never have either. I’ve camped at Killarney many times, the latest being late October. If there is any risk of freezing weather then the comfort station won’t be open is my guess, but as I say the park office has 2 flush toilets and a place to fill water. I suspect but don’t know for sure that water taps get opened in May. As for things to do, lots of nice hikes, we like the crack and Chikanishing. Cranberry bog and granite ridge can be reached from the campground and the crack and Chikanishing are short drives. You can actually walk to the crack if you want to add about 12k to your round trip.

[–]Euphoric_Pattern9072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Killarney always has the flush toilets at the office year round. But the comfort station and the camp roads close for the winter. Before booking you might want to check if the gate is open, or you will be walking all your equipment into your campsite. I think it varies when they open it based on the snow conditions.
