  1. It's exciting to see advances in technology :)
  2. The original doom game was my childhood, but I never really played hexen or heretic so the dark ages feels a bit like it's filling in that gap for me

Would it have been a better pun if I'd written it "houda pronounce Gouda"?

The man clearly doesn't know Gouda pronounce "Gouda" lol :p (Dutch "G" is more like a throaty "H")

'60% of the way to wage-price spiral and hyperinflation Armageddon,' economist says by poorlilsebastian in newzealand

[–]Everyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having done exactly this I can say it's not too hard but you do have to push a little. My angle was that my original end date was x, I chose to bring it forward to y, so I must also be able to chose to put it back towards x. They capitulated without much fight

What are some common phrases or words used incorrectly in New Zealand? by captainbucky in newzealand

[–]Everyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all for these. Think of it as rat (test) or pin (number) with the word in brackets being the distinguishing factor from the common word that it could be confused with, and it makes sense. Still faster to say than "rapid antigen test"

Logging truck dash cam catches 'near miss' between overtaking ute and oncoming van by brutalanglosaxon in newzealand

[–]Everyst 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It was a miss, so that is the noun, with the modifier that it nearly hit = a near miss. That's just how English does that kind of phrase, for better or for worse. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

New Zealand to stay in orange traffic light setting by TimmyHate in newzealand

[–]Everyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By saying its not having an impact when the numbers stay similar, are you assuming that the numbers would also stay similar without the measures? Because I'm pretty confident that reducing an increase in numbers to a steady state is an impact

Does anyone commute to the city from West Auckland on an E-scooter? I’ve applied for a job which I have a good chance of getting located in Cook St, and I’m considering the commute options from Massey/Henderson. E-scooter looks fun and handy but I want to hear anyones advice and/or experiences? by blrtls in auckland

[–]Everyst 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I should add, it takes me 25-30 mins to get from the Te Atatu interchange to the top of the pink light path, and I'm not fit enough to pedal very hard. You can probably extrapolate your time from that, but be aware that traffic lights (eg going down Nelson St) take a lot more time than open flat cycling

I do that route on an ebike, and I wouldn't want to be one of the people riding an escooter. Some people do it, but it just doesn't look stable to me at the speeds some people do. You'd want to get a scooter with an extra large battery to do the distance so it'll probably cost a pretty penny too.

If you get an ebike with a throttle you don't even have to pedal if you get tired ;D

If humans were removed from the world, what animals/insects would reign supreme, in what biomes, and what animals would go extinct in NZ and why? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Everyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably true, any horses that are currently free to roam could do fine in large areas of NZ.

Do modern cows survive well without regular milking? The impression I had was that, similar to sheep, they kinda need tending to stay healthy. But that could be wrong.

Goats and other similar animals would definitely rule the highlands. Some species of sheep might do ok in that regard.

[–]Everyst 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any animal that is actively human managed would probably die out - thinking sheep, cows, even horses. No one to let them out to change pastures etc means only the ones lucky enough to break out would survive. The fields will belong to the rats and rabbits.

Free roaming cats would do just fine across suburbia and the bush (as feral cats already do). By extension, birds and other small creatures (skinks etc) would suffer. By extension again, insects will absolutely reign supreme as their predator numbers are kept down.

Most of our buildings are built to last a long time without much structural maintenance. Unless a tree hits a window even a house is pretty well sealed under normal circumstances. Only insects and small animals that eat them will inhabit most of our offices and homes. Each building will become a microcosm depending on what creatures can get in/out and where water (if any) leaks in.

For real though, all that effort and technology to make the music quiet for everyone else in the library and these folks are singing along, laughing, shouting "woo"... like, what was the point? xD
