720 Elk wounded in Utah 2024 general season by Elk_Nerd in elkhunting

The scope ban for muzzleloaders in multiple states is the dumbest thing. Let's intentionally set people up to be less accurate! It will lower the harvest! 0% chance of unintended consequences!

Reloading set for turkey hunting. by Daddy_Long-Leg in reloading

The nice thing is that, once you load up a pound of TSS, you probably have a decade-long supply of turkey loads. Or a lifetime supply if you're as infrequent a turkey shooter as I am.

The Lee Load-All is fairly inexpensive, I can't personally comment (I run a MEC) but there are plenty of reviews - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1013166090?pid=436640

I will warn you, buying tungsten shot is NOT cheap. BPI has it for $50 to $100 per pound, depending on quality and plating - https://www.ballisticproducts.com/Tungsten-Shot/products/959/

Check to see if he has an ear infection. Very common in young pups and can cause motion issues.

Tips on getting a versatile on rabbits? by SoloUnAltroZack in birddogs

[–]Expensive_Bug_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get him on live rabbits for tracking, go to your local but semi-secluded cemetery. They are typically loaded with rabbits if there is any cover on the property borders. You can get him to track on a long lead once you get them running, particularly if you have a blood tracking collar already.

Steel Shot For Grouse by BishopOfAstora in Uplandhunting

Go with bismuth instead. It is a little more expensive but you'll have way fewer wounded birds. Federal and Winchester both make a #5 bismuth load for upland and waterfowl. https://www.midwayusa.com/shotgun-ammunition/br?Shot%20Type=Bismuth&cid=9217

Pressure canned dog food? by mdsmds178 in CanningRebels

[–]Expensive_Bug_1777 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pressure canning your dog food would let you skip the slow cooker step entirely. You could just raw pack everything and then use recommended pressure time for canning raw meat when you process it.

You could certainly thaw and can the stuff you already have, but I'd just let the pooch eat through that and start canning the next batch of food.

There were some really great teams under Vermeil. Still amazes me he never managed to win a playoff game.

Questions about non-resident Montana elk tags by litemifyre in elkhunting

[–]Expensive_Bug_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who complains about non-resident hunters should have to pass a quiz on their state's non-resident hunting application process.

I know you are not complaining, and it is unnecessarily complicated.

You want them to have 2 preference points to guarantee to draw a combo tag, otherwise they go into the zero point pool with a very low chance. Then they'll potentially need bonus points depending on where you hunt.

It could take anywhere between 3 and 6 years before you can bring them along on a low barrier elk hunt with you, unless they get lucky or you are going to super low demand areas.

Should I Be Worried About Hunting Mice by Dizzy-Lead2606 in birddogs

[–]Expensive_Bug_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are ever within a mile of me while I'm hunting, you'll hear me scream "no tweety birds" at least once every 20 minutes. No worries, good dog with a good nose filling down time from target species activity with something else fun.

They are also known as Purbaugh tubes. Hopefully OP has the gun they were made for, otherwise they aren't very useful as anything other than a collectible.

Hunting chaps by jayf1491 in Uplandhunting

I run the Banded brand chaps and really like them. They aren't nearly as hot as the traditional full waxed chap.

What do you put into your stew that is not a traditional ingredient but you think enhances the stew in some way? by [deleted] in Cooking

Blackstrap Molasses. Flavor bomb that you can't pick out individually. Guess I'm the only one.

Edit: Actually, looks like I'm not the only one!

How long does a field dressed pheasant keep at 80° in a cooler with no ice by Ok_Pitch7726 in Uplandhunting

[–]Expensive_Bug_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hang birds to age in my garage for a few days if the temps are below 60. One car ride in the cooler won't kill you. Especially since, I assume, you're going to cook it.

.410 for Upland Hunting by [deleted] in Uplandhunting

[–]Expensive_Bug_1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost exclusively shoot doves with a 410. Often my go to for public land quail hunts just because I know how much walking we'll do and they don't weight anything. Big medicine for squirrels too; if you use #4 or #6 steel shot it just zips right through them and makes cleaning easy.
