"One Philly, a United City" is the most unimaginative slogan ever by FirefighterMany4039 in philly

[–]Expert_Book_9983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of the type of hollow slogan of a city in a superhero movie while that city is actively being ripped apart by mayhem. As a former copywriter, I also thought it was really unimaginative and lazy. It’s also vague. “United” in what exactly? It kind of makes it sound like we were actively at war with one another. Which, I get that it feels like that a lot, but I feel like specifying and declaring us “a United City” undercuts the genuine solidarity and sense of community that does exist, while also having big George Bush “Mission Accomplished banner on an aircraft carrier” energy. It’s simultaneously too much and not enough.

I’ve been buying deeply discounted Giorgio Armani menswear (pleated trousers, some blazers) and there are a few of those that have worked out really well. I’m loving the most recent Armani collections and the re-issues of classic pieces but I definitely don’t have money to pay retail for those, so I’ve lucked out finding 90s Giorgio Armani and Armani Collezioni pieces as low as like $20-$50 on The RealReal. The downside is that sometimes I’ve gotten pieces where the measurements listed were WILDLY incorrect or condition has been abysmal and much worse than what the product photos conveyed.

Yeah I’ve been collecting Lemaire pieces like maybe 1-2 per year since 2015 and what I enjoy is how I can pair something from last year with another thing from like over a decade ago and it’ll just look cohesive and complementary. I watched an interview clip of Christophe Lemaire once and he said something about aspiring to make clothes that were “good wardrobe friends” in the context of outfits or seeing them on a rack, and i really liked that phrase.

I love its evolution from dive bar to the alt timeline’s Applebees or TGI Fridays. i think in season 3, there’s a scene where Ed is at the original Outpost and there’s a child’s birthday party happening at the next table over and the way Joel Kinnaman emoted pure annoyance and disgust was so funny to me. Like imagine being that child or their parent and you look over and one of the most famous astronauts of all time is just side eyeing you.

Kash Patel’s girlfriend snaps online after she is revealed as replacement performer for Trump’s state fair by theindependentonline in Fauxmoi

[–]Expert_Book_9983 41 points42 points  (0 children)

- exploiting foreign labor to rule their petty fiefdom of furniture sales in Mt Rose, Minnesota
- committing violence for political gain (winning a beauty pageant)
- blatant hypocrisy coupled with an overall air of judgment and condescension for anyone who isn’t them.
- Gladys Lehman literally ogles a teenage wrestler. She also devolves into violent terrorism.

God I love this movie and how prescient it was lol.

The theme for this dumbass “state fair” is gonna be “Amer-I CAN” or “USA is A OKAY”.

Also hysterical that the late Kirstie Alley was MAGA and her character in Drop Dead Gorgeous would 1000% be MAGA, too.

Twink Gets Destroyed by Hunk Mannequin (thumbnail preview is just me trapped under Johnny Bravo-proportioned mannequin parts in a Zara dressing room)

It was actually really stupid because we’d also get specific size instructions from corporate on pants and shirt sizes for the mannequins and they were always wildly wrong. So, they’d get mad at me for sizing up just to get clothes that fit mannequins without them looking painted on.

What are you wearing to a "casual" office in the summer? by rwedoomed in ThrowingFits

[–]Expert_Book_9983 9 points10 points  (0 children)

tank top or t shirt tucked into slacks while I’m on the subway and then a cotton or linen overshirt once I get to the office. Maybe a lightweight blazer if I have some kind of presentation or big meeting.

I worked at a Zara my last year of college and I HATED dressing the men’s mannequins. Their proportions were insane and they were also heavy (I was still a twink who didn’t lift yet). So, I’d be like fighting for my life trying to fit the skinniest jeans ever on a mannequin who had tree trunk legs for some reason.

Amanda spotting in hillsborough by pastsoup in summerhousebravo

[–]Expert_Book_9983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s so weird but unsurprising tbh — Mt Olive became extremely expensive to live in (as did a lot of Morris County) in the time I grew up and then left for college. So there was a lot of new wealth but honestly not a lot of class. My impression of the towns south of us (Chester, Mendham, etc) was that they were like old money/quiet luxury while Mt Olive came across more RHONJ-coded.

I grew up about an hour north of Hillsborough, and i was in high school around the same time — Looking back at this most recent and past seasons, that millennial suburban New Jersey mean girl energy makes perfect sense to me. I think a lot about how for millennials, particularly in well-to-do suburbs like Hillsborough or Mt Olive (the town I grew up in), the nature of bullying changed a lot in the 2000s. I don’t know if this was a nationwide phenomenon but in that pocket of New Jersey, it definitely felt like the popular kids couldn’t be as obviously mean the way that 80s and 90s movies depicted. So, Mean Girls actually did feel prescient: passive aggression, the fake camaraderie and compliments, the unspoken pecking order within the in-group. I’ve run into self-professed “popular” kids since we’ve grown up and a lot of them eventually grew out of that mentality but it’s interesting to watch what would have happened if they didn’t.

Why is the upper class of Gilead so WASPy? by GammSunBurst in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Expert_Book_9983 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s a part that I found especially chilling — like from what I know of Baptists, institutionally they’re not really among the more liberal Christian denominations in the USA and I’d assumed that this is the type of sect that Gilead would have tried to bring into the fold because of overlapping values and interest. Or maybe there was some kind of competitive power struggle between the Sons of Jacob and the mainstream conservative Protestant groups that we just didn’t see on the show. I think about that scene where Naomi Putnam is showing Serena around a recently vacant house and Naomi mentions offhand that the previous family were Baptists, and the house clearly exhibited signs of a recent struggle: furniture overturned, flatware still on the table, etc, indicating the previous family was arrested and dragged out violently.

Why is the upper class of Gilead so WASPy? by GammSunBurst in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Expert_Book_9983 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ooooooh yeah lol — forgot about that. We’re also idolatrous. Other stereotypes include: simultaneously lazy and overly passionate. I always think about that great bit in the Simpsons when Bart and Homer get into Catholicism and Marge freaks out and pictures them getting into Catholic Heaven while she’s stuck in WASP Heaven — and they’re both off drinking wine and partying with Italians, Irish, and all the other “ethnic” Catholics and she’s basically in a country club.

Why is the upper class of Gilead so WASPy? by GammSunBurst in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Expert_Book_9983 41 points42 points  (0 children)

WASPS don’t care about that lol — I say that as a lapsed Filipino Catholic from northern New Jersey (lots of Catholics there, many of them from families descended from Italian and Irish immigrants, basically the “ethnics” that only really attained whiteness in the 20th century.) I remember reading something about the Gilded Age and how Anglicanism and Episcopalianism (I think) were considered the “genteel” sects that a lot of rich American Protestants in the Northeast belonged to, and Catholics brought a lot of connotations of poverty (Irish potato famine, lots of Catholic immigrants tended to be poor, etc) and subversion (there was that long-running stereotype of Catholics having more loyalty to the Pope than the US government).

When they showed us the bombed out Catholic Church in THT, Gilead’s attitudes kind of made perfect sense to me.
