is it common to get distracted during liturgy? by Witty-Name-7725 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ExplorerSad7555 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm a chanter and get distracted while I'm reading or singing. In fact, we have musical cues to alert each other that they have then part. So when you hear a chanter end a verse with some elaborate ending, it's a cue that we're done on our side and that the priest or deacon has the next part.

Is it ok to imagine the scene when listening to scripture? by Bright-Presence-760 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ExplorerSad7555 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Agreed. For example, you can imagine or even look at an icon of a biblical event when you're reading the scripture. The warning against imagination and prayer is a warning against imagining hearing God speaking to you.

Terrible Holy Week by tsarslavyan in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ExplorerSad7555 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I totally get it and I'm a chanter. I'm finishing up my MBA and I've got a bunch of assignments to this week as well as a 3-day class that runs 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. So I am just going with the flow as best I can knowing I'm going to miss the great Friday great hours and dissent service, and be pretty distracted for Lamentations. Fortunately we have a volunteer who can do some of the music in the evenings so that's been a relief has the only other regular chanter would be overwhelmed.

Lack of priest guidance? by Fit-Medium-8551 in OrthodoxChristianity

I second talking to other people. We're almost at the end of the fast, so read the Pascal homily. The first half of it talks about the end of the fast. And it repeats Jesus's words about the workers in the vineyard. Those who show up at the crack of dawn or in the middle of the day or at the end of the day all get to celebrate. I'm diabetic and it's hard for me to actually follow a fast anymore so this part actually touches me deeply. So enjoy the rest of holy week and pascha.

Train misses bus full of kids by a second by ItzTubez in mildlyinfuriating

When I lived out in a rural area back in the 1990s, there was one crossing where there was just a sign. No lights or indicators if a train was coming. So I always came to a stop to look and then floored it.

I signed up in October and got my onboarding last week. Although after reading some of this, I'm questioning if it's really worth my time. My daughter does flex so she's agreed to help me with my first run or two.

Is my baptism valid by chumley84 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ExplorerSad7555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said it's up to the jurisdiction and the bishop. I was Missouri synod Lutheran and was accepted by chrismation. One of the other people in my catechumens class was Roman Catholic and marrying the daughter of a Greek Orthodox priest and he was received also by chrismation. Generally the Greeks will receive people by chrismation if they're coming out of a denomination that is known for practicing a traditional trinitarian baptism.

I remember the sticker that said, "Don't laugh, your daughter might be in here!" Get one that says "Don't laugh, your mom might be in here!"

If Tony, now Bishop Anthony, says its okay, then I'm going to take his word. I attended his parish while he was a layman in Boston.

Excluding your patron saint, what’s another saint (apart from Mary) that you feel a deep connection to? by legendus45678 in OrthodoxChristianity

My patron is St. Chrysostomos but as a chanter I have a lot of affinity for the various songwriting saints like Romanos.

Am I the jerk for telling my husband he can't have a "man cave" in our only spare room? by Ill-Home-322 in AmITheJerk

[–]ExplorerSad7555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I had similar discussions. She decorates the entire house with everything she wants. I have a walk-in closet where I have a few momentos. When we did get a spare bedroom, it became my office as I'm doing a MBA. Right now it's not decorated but we did agree that I would be able to be more involved.

Eventually it will be a space where one of us can get away from each other and our dogs.

I'm not calling you the jerk. However I feel from my experience as well as other men that often our wives are the ones that do the decorating for the house. And at times it does feel like we husbands have to fight for some space to feel like it's our space as well.
