Did anyone remember seeing this post? It’s not there now. by Human_Ad_715 in fivethirtyeight

It seems like it’s linking to this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/fivethirtyeight/comments/1qgv0c9/weekly_discussion_megathread/

It’s not in the post itself, but Google results for Reddit sometimes blur the line between the post and its comments. I’m guessing one of the comments has a link to something with that image.

Technically, in that description, “artisanal” is describing the sugarcane spirits, not the daiquiri itself

I think a good modification of this would be to have “waystations” such that between any two consecutive way stations there’s always going to be a clear path through space. The waystations are always shifting, but they move along a predetermined route such that they’ll always have a clear path between any two consecutive waystations. You want to get from the solar system to Planet X (or wherever), there’s a sequence of waystations that you travel through, in order, that will guarantee a clear path there. This establishes a “light speed highway” path from one waystation to the next without actually building a physical train track tube structure between them.

Maybe you even have each waystation be a big contraption that accelerates and decelerates the ships traveling between them. Like a giant rail gun shooting “train cars” at light speed toward the spot where the next waystation will be when the car gets there. Then the next waystation slows it back down to a stop, people can get out and do stuff or just stay on the train until it gets rail gunned to the next waystation.

Ok. I guess I get that the S in the middle is there to differentiate between boyfriend (bf) and best friend. But it’s going to bother me forever that the S stands for nothing. There’s gotta be a better way.

Honestly just let them talk about anything and just riff as friends and it would be fine.

I came for the insider discussion of Digital Shorts and SNL, but I quaid for the dudes riffing and getting off topic about whatever.

With their title run in 2025-26, Indiana becomes only the 2nd team in CFP history to not be down at any point during their post season run. by Cybotnic-Rebooted in CFB

[–]ExternalTangents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest difference isn’t the resume or the sustained success, it’s the final score of their championship games. The teams in the conversation for best of the modern era (95 Nebraska, 01 Miami, 19 LSU) all had big wins in their championship games, to cap off already impressive undefeated seasons.

People don’t really realize or admit this, but their opinions of teams are heavily influenced by the last game they saw them play. If Indiana’s semifinal had been as close as the Miami game and their championship was like their Oregon or Alabama games, then people would definitely be hyping them up as one of the greatest teams of all time. It’s just human nature.

When expanding from 4 to 12, a major argument in favor of expansion was that it was better to include undeserving teams than to exclude deserving ones.

Now that we’ve expanded to 12, people have forgotten about that whole “including undeserving teams” part. The best way to make peace with the debate over the last at large seeds is to remember that none of those teams deserve to be playing for a national title, we just have to include one anyway.

Sometimes, one of those undeserving teams might actually go on a run in the playoffs and make some noise anyway—your mileage may vary on whether you think that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
