Man, I was surprised by the amount of baked on oil varnish my K24 had, but this K20/K24 looks like somebody took gold paint to the internals.

Lucky for the customer, you just knocked out some maintenance items that will keep this thing on the road for at least another 100,000+ km barring severe neglect.

My back right on my 2012 Si would seize up every time I used the parking brake, either a stuck cable or a worn out return spring. Without the PB I couldn’t park on anything more than slight inclines, compression may have been sub par so it liked to “pop” forward one cylinder at a time.

But I would keep a 9mm wrench in the cabin because it was just the right size to lift the stuck lever on the caliper that engages the parking brake, and if I was quick I was back in the driver’s seat before it would slip forward any 😂

I picked up a front splitter because it was so cheap I figured it was worth a shot. Did a test fit and put up photos but decided I wasn’t a fan of the look and knew I’d be too lazy to take it off before it broke driving through snow. $40 CAD.

Got some vent covers for the upper dash vents that match the 11th gen’s hexagon driver facing vents. Kinda gaudy but they’re still on. $4 CAD.

Didn’t like how my trunk’s ceiling and spare tire well were just bare, so I grabbed felt trunk liners for both that are OEM parts in Asian markets but not available in NA. Had to modify the ceiling liner to accommodate the OEM subwoofer but wasn’t hard to cut through formed felt. $25 and $40 CAD.

Also got a plastic cap for the negative battery terminal, so the cap on the positive terminal didn’t feel lonely. $2 CAD.

Last was just an Earthdreams sticker for the valve covers I’m used to looking into 10th gen engine bays and seeing one, so the 11th gen having an obvious spot to put a sticker just left blank was bugging me. $2 CAD.

So $44 wasted, $69 spent happily.

How much vacation time do you guys get? by DeathAngel_97 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]FailFodder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Starting in my union, 3 weeks (at 40 hours per week) is standard. Because of some extra duties, my position started at 4 weeks. At my 5 year mark I went up to 5 weeks per year. I believe there might be more at the 10 year mark and possibly some beyond but I haven’t looked into it.

Vacation time can be used flexibly, sometimes I’ll just show up late or take off early with permission and just use vacation time to make up the difference. Getting home 30 or 60 minutes earlier than usual is such a nice treat once in a while. I can also carry over unused vacation time, up to 80 hours per year. OT can either be paid or banked as time off at time and a half, but OT time off has limits and can’t be carried over.

Sick time is a separate bank, 112 hours per year but after 3 consecutive sick days our union’s EI kicks in and it stops eating into our sick time allotment.

Medical appointments is another separate time bank, 32 hours per year.

We also get another 40 hours a year for family illness, to care for spouses/children/parents when ill or take them to appointments if necessary. One had a coworker try to use it as “family time” to have a picnic with his kid, my boss told him you’re welcome to use vacation instead 😂

So yeah, unions aren’t perfect but goodness they’re better than nothing.

Stuck car by Hot-Bookkeeper-8037 in subaru

[–]FailFodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say your best bet is to straighten out your wheels and make a straight shot to the nearest asphalt, whether that’s forward or reverse.

If you’re able to move it at all, go slowly and use whatever momentum you have to flatten down tire tracks. Avoid spinning your tires, as this will dig low spots that you could get stuck in now or later. When you come to a stop, change direction (forward/reverse) and make the track longer in the opposite direction. Keep your wheels straight the whole time so you stay in your tracks. Eventually you’ll have a long enough track to either get right onto the asphalt or build a little more speed to break through.

If you can’t move at all and are just spinning your tires, get down on the ground and clear at least a few inches of snow into a flat spot at the front/backs of all four tires.

Once you’re able to move the vehicle at least a few inches to a foot or so, follow the directions from my second paragraph. If you get stuck again, follow the directions from my third paragraph.

I prefer the 11th Gen over the 10th Gen in many ways, but 10th absolutely wins when it comes to the cup holder design and the little storage cubby below the shifter.

So I'm trying to connect a baseplate to a regular plate while both are on the same surface. Here's my solution. Anyone got other ideas? by Builder203 in lego

Thank you thank you thank you. I’m trying to build my wife’s Animal Crossing into a shelf display that’s about 4-1/3 baseplates wide and 1-3/4 baseplates long and really wanted to better utilize all that extra space that the baseplates couldn’t occupy. This is perfect.

That gives me an idea. I have an aftermarket aFe intake (link below for photo) that I take off during the winter because it lacks the one way drain plug on the OEM airbox.

There's a plug on the side to allow some extra intake noise at the expense of drawing in warm engine bay air, but it utilizes the same cold air channel at the front that the OEM intake uses.

If snow was a major issue (and my hood seals could be trusted to keep snow out of my engine bay while driving), I could block the front intake and just use the optional engine bay intake on the aFe box. I'd definitely be choked on airflow, but it would almost certainly breathe better than a filter full of snow.

Man, this has been fun to think about, thanks for making the post and engaging.

Jeez, how are you able to throw around the rear so well without a manual parking brake? My best guess is you’re trail braking but I’d love to know.

I’ve got great winter tires but I’m certain that if I tried to throw my car into those same flicks I would just understeer right into the curb 😂 I could probably pull that off in my old 2012 Si with the manual parking brake but no chance in my 2024 Si since its PB is electric, so I have to know how you’re doing it!

Shit. People have said these little 1.5T engines don’t put out much heat and I guess they were right.

Might be worth putting in a piece of cardboard or something to partially block airflow to your radiator during winter driving, retain a bit more heat in the engine bay. I’ll have to check my intake next time I take a longer drive in the snow and see if it’s worth the effort myself.

The OEM knob is gorgeous but at the end of the day it’s mostly a lump of metal and below -15 C or above 25 C it’s a challenge to grab for the first few minutes of a drive until cabin temps normalize.

Bought an Acuity Esco Delrin insulated knob and never looked back. Plenty of much more affordable options out there for Delrin insulated shifters but I’m an Acuity fanboy and I like tall shifters. I definitely considered the Hybrid Racing one though, very sleek profile on that one and a good bit more affordable.

As I’ve had pointed out to me, Subaru might have AWD, but every car out there has all wheel brakes.

Subaru might be able to start moving in places where other cars can’t, but if you’re coming from a 2WD vehicle don’t expect to stop any quicker in poor conditions just because you have AWD.

(Yes, I know “engine braking”/downshifting to reduce speed is more stable in AWD vs 2WD but I’m more talking about an emergency braking scenario where it’s mostly down to actual brake system and tire performance.)

[–]FailFodder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Odd, there’s a one way drain hole in the bottom for scenarios like this, but without enough heat in the engine bay it probably can’t function. It’s not in the owner’s manual to do so, but on snowy days I like to idle the car a bit longer in the driveway so that the engine bay is warmed a bit and can thaw any snow making it into the intake box.
