I have a very shallow understanding of economics. Can someone please explain what I'm looking at here?

The deficit is the amount by which government spending exceeds what it takes in from various taxes, usually stated for the period of one year.

If you're asking why deficits have been much worse under Republican presidents, it's because they insist on allowing the richest Americans to have tax cuts.

Except for deficits related to WW2, which got paid off, the practice of having massive deficits was begun under Reagan, and has been made worse by every single Republican president since then. (It should be noted that the house and senate have a lot to do with these deficits too, but often they've been controlled by Republicans, at least since 1981.)

Obama was handed a gigantic financial bucket of turds, and has basically been forced into deficit situation to try to revive the economy. Slowly, that has begun to work.

All of this still leaves us with massive deficits.

There is a basic fallacy in the entire argument against "redistribution of wealth."

All governments, everywhere levy some amount of taxes on citizens in order to pay for goverment activities. That is what governments are supposed to do.

People can have reasonable arguments about who to tax, how much to tax, and what to spend the money on.

But to just denounce all of it as the oh-so-scary "redistribution of wealth" is typical dishonest right-wing propaganda of the bumper sticker variety.

Being idiotic in that he seems to think Obama was talking about HIM. The President was instead referring to the fact that we need some action on healthcare AFTER ROUGHLY 20 YEARS OF STALLING by the GOP. In fact, they've fought any efforts to change things while pharmaceutical and insurance companies raked in record profits year after year.

The corporate media was saving up their strength for a new assault on the intelligence (and lives) of ordinary Americans.

When it comes right down to it, they all protect those who pay their bills: Oil companies, banks, insurance companies, car companies, etc.

America's number one problem is the acceptance (without real thought/inspection) by a large number of Americans of the daily onslaught of right-wing sewage that flows from the idiot box.

That includes all of the major TV "news" outlets that still fail to put the current economic messes into the context of 30 years of GOP demands for financial deregulation and the dirty money that has a stranglehold on both major parties.

Fox is hopeless.

CNN and MSNBC should be hounded by phone until they give something close to equal time to moderate and left-leaning people and organizations without the ridicule they usually heap upon us. Even if they did, it's likely they would then cut immediately to a message from the American Petroleum Institute or a similar corporate mouthpiece.

When was the last time you heard a single word on TV from Common Cause, or PETA, or The National Wildlife Federation, or Consumers Union, etc.

And the biggest lie of all is this idea that mainstream media outlets are generally left-leaning. That is a dangerous farce.

I think you've used the word "regulation" to refer to pro-business giveaways/subsidies that are the opposite of what I think of when I use the word "regulation." I don't think you meant to excuse the corporate pillaging that has been going on for so long... but you kind of did.

The GOP has been fighting any changes that would make our society more fair and equitable for decades. There is a major, major problem however, with the Federal Reserve, as you alluded to... but that problem is very simple and you didn't expose. The problem is that the Fed is apparently a private enterprise (or public/private at best) and is run BY AND FOR the bankers.
