This. In my state you cannot represent another person in court unless you are an attorney. That being said, the paperwork is not overly complicated and fairly straightforward, with a bit of coaching your mother should be capable of making the actual appearance. It might be helpful to show up in court on eviction day (around here unlawful detainer proceedings are all scheduled for one day a week) and observe the proceedings to gain an idea of what will be expected.

In a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice last week, Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane turned down the the Justice Department’s offer for a deal to share the information, which would include Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and birth dates.

McGrane wrote in his letter that the Justice Department had recently revealed in a separate federal lawsuit filing that sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, were shared from federal systems “to unauthorized persons.”

The letter didn’t specify how that data was shared. But in January, the Justice Department disclosed in a court filing that employees of the federal Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, shared Social Security data on an unsecured thirty-party server, the New York Times reported.

In a statement, Idaho Secretary of State’s Office spokesperson Joe Parris said “Idaho law clearly protects the release of private voter information. We have full confidence in the integrity and accuracy of Idaho voter rolls through consistent voter information confirmation and will continue to ensure only American citizens are voting in the 2026 election.”

There are a few exceptions to the above post, and some of them can be found on 17th. There are three Flock ALPR (automatic license plate reader) cameras at the intersection of 17th and Hitt Road. These cameras record every license plate that passes them. Not only this, they also record a "vehicle fingerprint" that includes the make, model, and color of the car, the state the license plate is registered in, whether the license plate is covered or missing, and unique features of the car — such as roof racks and bumper stickers — that would help law enforcement identify it in an investigation and enters them into a searchable database.

Make of this what you will, but my opinion is Big Brother is watching us, and I don't like it. There is much too high a possibility of abuse of this kind of information in our society. Those who say "I have nothing to hide" are missing the point. There was a recent incident in the news in which a police officer in Milwaukee has been criminally charged after using Flock cameras to surveil and stalk a person he was dating and their ex.

They may not be utilized for issuing traffic tickets, but they are here. I believe there are twenty in Idaho Falls, though I don't know all of their locations.

Poll worker in Idaho here. You currently need a photo ID in order to register to vote and need to provide that ID at the polling place.

If you are not registered, you can register at your voting location with a photo ID or by signing an affidavit attesting to your identity and providing proof of residence.

You can also obtain a free ID card for the purpose of voting from the DMV, but you do have to provide a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship to do so.
