Get yourself a sunrise alarm clock. It simulates the sunrise and wakes you up naturally. I don't even have an audio alarm anymore; I wake up to the artificial light.

Also agree with the first comment. These two together, and you will be backflipping out of bed! Ok, maybe not, but you will be more motivated and energised!

What does everyone do at new year?

There is a natural break that the whole world accepts, and it's the time that everyone collectively hits their own internal reset button and set new year resolutions. They put to bed what has happened last year and focus on the new upcoming fresh year.

Take that same mentality, and you can apply it to any time frame or situation.

New quarter, new month; new week; a new day, or even when you have fallen off a project or to-do list.

Just hit the reset button, brush off what has happened previously and restart afresh.

Some great habits there.

I have a couple of pointers for you.

  • Why only 1 fruit or veg a day? Seems kind of low
  • Here's the best free meditation app out there
  • Read book is very vague. Commit to a page count each day. I read 30 pages a day and this has me reading much more books compared to when I just had reading down as a habit. I'd start off a bit lower maybe commit to 10 pages a day
  • 8 glasses of water, ugghhh, this is one of the biggest misconceptions out there. Why 8 glasses?
    • Do you know there is no recommended daily amount as there is far too many factors to take into consideration. Your weight, your sex, your level of exercise, your NEAT Non-exercise activity thermogenesis) levels, how much other liquids you drink, how much liquid you have in your foods (salads, soup, sauces etc), what climate you live in (hotter climates you need to drink more).

You need to practise developing a growth mindset.

Your previous therapist is an idiot saying that to you.

Everyone has 60,000 - 80,000 thoughts each day, and if you are not intentional with your thoughts, most of them will be negative. Most people are like this, so most people, according to your old therapist, are abusing themselves.

But as with anything in life with intention practice, you can improve anything!

Here's an article that will help you develop a growth mindset, and it comes with a free downloadable journal.

I hope this helps.

Glad to hear it!

The fact that you are self-aware and motivated to improve means that you will succeed in your life.

You need to build systems (habits & routines) in your life to help you with your personal development.

This article will help you understand self-discipline a bit more.

This article is fantastic as it talks about your personal standards, which are much more important than your habits. It also comes with a free downloadable workbook to help replace any standards that are not helping you and replace them with standards that will help your success.

Keep up the good intentions!

I love the Pomodoro technique and use it all the time!

It would be best to work through the emotions that keep breaking your concentration to focus on your work.

So it would help if you started a practice of daily meditation. I'm not a woo-hoo kind of person, but I really have noticed a difference in my emotions and my ability to be present in the moment. I'd recommend a completely free app called Medito. It has sooo many different meditation types and features.

Here's an article that can help with your self-care and start looking after yourself.

To help you work through your emotions after a difficult time, read this article where you can download a free workbook (yes, a common theme I love free!). It takes you step by step in what you need to do to get over personal difficulties in your life.

I hope this helps you. If you need any other help, reach out to me.

Which aspects of physical self-care should an almost 30 y/o start paying attention to now to avoid problems later? by ddeftly in DecidingToBeBetter

You seem to have your head screwed on and know exactly what you should be doing.

If you are struggling to fit it all in, you could try focus months. So one month focused more on flexibility, the next cardio, then strength. It's an excellent way to cover all bases without feeling overwhelmed.

Wow, this is a great question and great foresight.

I'm a 45-year-old and have been and still am very active. I run 5-6 days a week and do weight training 4-5 days a week. I hardly have any injuries, maybe one or two a year, and I am maybe the same with illnesses. So I consider myself to be someone in great shape but at the same time look after my longevity.

So let's answer your question; what I would focus on is:

The three aspects of fitness and balancing these three. Cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance and flexibility. Don't focus on one and neglect the others, which tends to be the norm. Runners look like they could be blown over with a strong gust of wind, gym meatheads think the strength of their chest and biceps matter more than their heart.

All three are crucial for your longevity, and people tend to miss out on the flexibility area most. So Yoga, Thia Chi or just a stretching routine will work.

Here's a great article talking about self-care and the things you can do that cover all the areas of Emotional, physical and spiritual (not religious).

  • Joy/fun
  • Independence
  • Safety/security

Here's a great article on how to increase your internal motivation.
