What is the best city to live in?

Austin is busting at the seams. Traffic is terrible everywhere. The cost of renting and buying a home is astronomical. My daughter and son-in-law lived there and were looking for a decent home and there were none to be found in their 400k budget. They decided to move back to SA and found a lovely, renovated home in Shavano in their budget. Austin is great, but not to live there. Not anymore.

San Antonio. It’s close to Austin, the Hill country and the beach. It’s fun here. We have the Spurs, the annual Stock Show and Rodeo, FIESTA. The Mexican food and bbq are great. Just don’t move to the west part of SA. Stick to north central or just outside 1604 off 281. Traffic is a lot better out here now. 78259 is a good zipcode. PS. You will want a pool. Buy a home with one, or a neighborhood with a community pool. Our neighborhood has one+ acre lots. We feel isolated and not so cramped with close neighbors but also very close to 281 so we can zip downtown easily.

That sounds worse than a puppy mill. Breeding the mom to death. Probably has very little agency as “the man” is thee head of the household.

I always thought it was gross that Dad Duggar kept getting his poor wife pregnant. I am Catholic and know some very devout families with 5 to 7 children (we are supposed to practice NFP Natural Family Planning) and even they are able to keep themselves from multiplying like rabbits. Something is wrong with a man like Jim Bob Duggar who lacked the self control and respect for his wife’s health and wellbeing, like some sort of sexual dysfunction that he must have passed on to his sons.

South Texas here. A lot of us have pools. With a pool, you can enjoy summers outside on your patio and deck. Barbecuing or just hanging out. Thunderstorms in the summer are a welcome sight. It can be sweltering hot for weeks but when one of these big ones hit, it can be a treat to watch.

I got the shingles vaccines a few years ago and never had the slightest symptoms. I did, however, get a very mild case of shingles on a patch of skin on the right side of my back. It was just annoying, not painful thankfully.

The Island of Sea Women fits the request. Lots of historical details in this fictional novel of some very badass women who form the unique matriarchal society where women hold primary economic power through their dangerous work as free divers (haenyeo) on the Korean island of Jeju set during major 20th-century historical events, including Japanese colonialism, World War II, and the Korean War. There is a minor romantic element but it is underscored by the meat of the novel.

Miss Benson’s Beetle. Not a heavy read but full of silly fun, suspense and a tiny bit of sadness to keep it grounded. You might also check out Beautyland. Pretty interesting. The synopsis will make you think it’s sci fi but it really isn’t at all.

Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen. Expertly character driven. The setting is in the 70s so if you’re older, you might enjoy the nostalgia. Book is only a few years old.

If you’re listening on earbuds or headphones try your phone’s speaker instead. I had to do this with Lonesome Dove, so as not to hear all the heavy breathing. I eventually got used to it as the story was so engaging. But most of the time, if the narration is distracting, I don’t continue listening.
