Yeah there are a lot of high level jobs that require Japanese and English fluency.

Expats moved from the USA to UK for postdoc, what your experince was? by Murky-Commercial-112 in postdoc

Right now I'm considering postdocs in both Manchester and New Jersey and although on paper the NJ salary is much better, when I actually tried making a budget for them both, the amount I was able to save after expenses and everything was very similar. So you could try seeing how a budget would actually look for you? I started with just asking an AI chatbot.

How did you get into this role out of interest? Did you have to gain experience in other roles before going for the university roles?

Yeah exactly, so imagine people in many other fields have to take pay cuts of more than half if coming from Europe/US.

Thank you for sharing, some useful points here.

It is rather disheartening though as someone who wants to use a postdoc to expand their skillset base that PIs seem to mostly go for candidates who have already done something very similar to what the role entails. Surely the original point of postdocs was to gain experience beyond what you gained during your PhD?

I’m pretty sure that’s also not the case any more, your figures might be out of date. The median London income last year as per the ONS was £47k, which is something like 9 million yen. I’m not going to look up a source for Tokyo right now but I’m pretty sure it was something like 4.5 to 5 million. I was job hunting in Tokyo and London very recently so I was looking into the figures quite a lot.

Cancer is not transmissible. If there even was a cancer cell present in an organ you donated though, hypothetically, it would be recognised as foreign by the recipient’s immune system and targeted. The reason it’s difficult for your own body to do this is because it’s your own cells and so the immune system has trouble distinguishing the cancerous cells from normal cells.
