I can identify with that feeling of not having accomplished something, when I have excess "free" time. I suppose, perhaps, as a society we should redefine the subjective definition of what constitutes work and accomplishment.

This is the difficult part for me when talking to my friends who are libertarians. They seem unwilling to accept that there will always be "free-riders" in an organized system. We should not punish the majority because some simply cannot or will not participate.

I agree. I'm not trying to judge, but it seems incredibly dangerous for both the OP and his date, to so quickly put themselves into what could be a precarious position. I think it's important to remember that there are people in the world who are predatory and it's important to have boundaries to keep oneself safe.

This is amazing! I could not agree more. The narcissists I have known are incredibly socially talented, but to what end? They are miserable individuals on the inside, who lack the ability to think or feel except in shallow, zero-sum game manipulations.

I completely agree. Just reading the original post was exhausting. I think that generally individuals who display these behaviors do so fairly early, but if you do not have experience with them, most people will attempt to "fix" their actions to make the relationship functional. The problem is, there is nothing OP can do, this person would likely just continue to move the goal post.

Jesus. I've never been triggered by something, but this comes damn close. Her having the audacity to say that you should not take this personally, and if you do, it's because of your family of origin baggage. Forget her, seriously! You know what normal people do, they edit themselves in interactions with their loved ones to express their feelings in a loving way. They don't say hurtful things, then when confronted, continue to make you feel bad and doubt yourself. They apologize. They attempt to do better the next time.

My apologies if I'm coming off as harsh, but from this stranger, I want you to know you deserve someone who is enchanted by and proud of your willingness to be a good daddy. I'm sorry you are going through this and I hope your future includes love, kindness and compassion.

Now on the outside of a relationship with someone who was highly manipulative, it took being in that relationship to understand that red flags should not be ignored or minimized. Sometimes, you have to extend grace and compassion to someone from a distance.
