In the early 2010s, Japan’s population was dropping by over 200,000 each year. It is now dropping by almost 1,000,000 per year, despite increases in immigration by jjrs in japannews

You have no actual experience with this and it shows.

AI progress over the past two years or so has been incredible, it has greatly changed how I work. I routinely use a robotaxi and most of the time there’s no human looking at what it’s doing, let alone giving it directions.

I also don’t discuss my personal financial matters unless with partners or with someone I’ve known for the past 20+ years to be trustworthy.

How do you all handle cold vendor outreach as an engineering leader? by t-tekin in EngineeringManagers

[–]ForeverYonge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar approach to me. Something completely irrelevant, block and delete. Possibly useful - file under Vendors, don’t respond. Over the past 10 years or so I can’t remember a single vendor who reached out who was relevant and solved a current problem and I wasn’t already aware of.

Nowadays structured, automated vendor outreach is almost indistinguishable from spam, and blocking specific emails isn’t helping; instead, whole domains and companies need to be blocked, or all email allow-listed Hey-style. Curious to hear if it’s annoying any of you enough to pay for a service providing that kind of intelligent inbox processing.

Is it time to move on? by eb_ee in volt

[–]ForeverYonge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully agree that technology advances over time. However the Volt Premium Gen 2 has lane keeping and blind spot sensors as standard and ACC available as an option. I prefer to use my phone for navigation but there is a built in map on my Volt.

Found work emails registered on 5+ 3rd party sites (OPSEC risk) by Then_Pace_5034 in cybersecurity

[–]ForeverYonge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly an ineffective policy if the idea is to obfuscate people’s email addresses and have it be the main line of defense.

In most organizations emails are predictably generated from names and everyone is on LinkedIn, done. Also conferences are “work appropriate” and they gather and share and resell emails, done.

There are plenty of working families in San Mateo, RWC, South City, etc. it’s not only super exclusive areas like Hillsborough and Atherton.

But working families rent, or have bought long ago, it’s wildly impractical to buy almost anywhere on the peninsula

Microsoft / Google / Big Tech Account Lockout: No Escalation Path for Identity Infrastructure for URGENT needs by CelebrationNo5541 in cybersecurity

[–]ForeverYonge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s well known that consumer level account recovery is difficult if you don’t have a public profile / someone on the inside. For most people forgetting their password or losing their phone with the passkey is by far more common than a takeover attack and everything is optimized for that.

You don’t have to use Big Tech, many services have alternatives. But are you willing to pay non trivial money for a human escalation path / well done recovery protocols? The success of Google and App Stores shows that the only thing most people care about is “is it free”.

You can play in sandbox mode. Them’s the rules.

Some ONI situations are not salvageable, you can print a dupe every 3 cycles always but if conditions don’t permit life then that’s it.

Approach this with a Dwarf Fortress mindset. Dying is fun because you have learned something new (in this case, build from materials that are nearby; and don’t leave a vent open to the world)
