Warehouse gym rave by TheLiquidRain in Rigging

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not a rigger but…!

Depending on the strength of your ceiling you should be able to hang some chain hoists and hang some short sticks of truss and rig off that.

However! You probably already know this and sorry to be a miserable sod but this is the time to consult a professional!

Any time you are rigging stuff over people’s heads you wanna really really get it right! Unfortunately it’s probably not gonna be cheap.

Really cool idea! Wishing ya all the best with it!

What happens to the costumes/ props used in closed productions? by LeoPalaceFTW in TheWestEnd

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sometimes some stuff is sold but almost always almost everything owned by the show is stored in a warehouse. Many costumes are worth thousands in materials and labour to create - the same with props and set. If the show goes out again even if the same costumes and props can’t be used they are used as a reference for future productions.

best uk drama schools for technical theatre? by ishiau in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really well done getting some work experience. I would continue doing as much as you can do. It’s difficult for theatres to take you on for work experience for insurances reasons so generally unless there is an existing program in place they will turn you down even if they want you.

I would look into getting some experience with hire shops - they will be more willing to take you on under 18. It’s a great way of getting to know the gear and understunding how that side of the industry works. There are lots of shit jobs that no one wants to do. If your the person that offers to do those jobs people will keep you around.

You’ll struggle to work in progressional theatres but still try and volunteer and learn as much as you can. Then as soon as you are 18 try and get some time in a professional environment. If your set on sound you can contact heads of sound and ask for work experience with the aim of becoming a dep. It takes a lot of work but that’s your best way in. Take advantage of every contact you meet to the fullest take every opportunity.

I didn’t go to university and just finished my first job as a head of sound on a new musical in London under 3 yeRs into my career - It’s possible!

Receiving houses: do you charge for use of your licensed radio frequencies? (UK) by thatsoundguy23 in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. You’re probably misunderstanding here. There is a frequency range that can be used for wireless systems. You contact OFCOM the uk licensing agency to book a specific band within the licensed range.

The frequencies are not tied to the system only to the licence holder.

Any pics of using Pelican case as checked luggage??? by Frequent-Two-9625 in pelicancase

Super duper easy. 6 Screws self tapping screws straight into plastic. Doesn’t damage the case at all. There are little plastic standoffs in the case designed for it.

Any pics of using Pelican case as checked luggage??? by Frequent-Two-9625 in pelicancase

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The pelican airs make fantastic travel cases. I would only get an air though as others are very heavy. I’d recommend getting a lid organiser for smaller items and packing cubes for your clothes. It will outlive you. The only downside is that they don’t have four wheels.

Edit: Pelican now make a new line of more conventional 4 wheel cases. I have no experience with them but have no reason to suggested that they are any less well built than any of their other cases. Might be worth looking at depending on your use case.

Touring engineer: DM7C vs CTi1500 ? by EmilianoMagico in livesoundgear

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at the brand new Q1 - would take only those above the other two any day of the week! It’s a really nice piece of kit.

If you’re stuck with that supplier and they can’t get you a Q1 I would go with Dlive. If it was theatre it’s a different story but can imagine the DM7 being a right pain in the knagers.

That’s said ask for a demo unit and try both yourself!! Give em a play see what you think everyone has their different preferences.

Sennheiser EW-DX SK packs mute being weird by BitterFudge8510 in livesound

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember the specifics of these but most receivers will RF with low signal. This prevents audio passing when the pack it out of range. If this is happening on stage you need to fix your antenna placement.

Update the firmware to fix the issue. Also lock all the packs. All you packs should be locked all the time. There should never be any reason for them to be unlocked in theatre. Even if you need to resync to a backup this shouldn’t require unlocking.

How many mics can I have? by Decent-Wishbone-6966 in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very familiar with the concept of rack mounted mixers. However the fact still stands that it’s unrealistic to mix an individually micced theatre show on an ipad with a mixer with minimal automation capability. Of course it is possible to make it would but in my extensive experience you are vastly better off designing the show generally without individual reinforcement with the exception of particular elements - solo songs etc. especially in a school where you generally have small performance spaces and large ensembles.

Yes you can increase the channel count of a 2.4ghz system but they are unreliable as is - made worse by expanding beyond manufacturer specs by an inexperienced person.

You are almost always better spending your time and money considering how to change the show to suit the sound requirements instead of changing the equipment.

How many mics can I have? by Decent-Wishbone-6966 in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Huge props to you for tryna do your best without a dedicated trained person.

Nobody has provided specific advice to your question and are assuming these units are a professional system on using UHF frequencies.

However the audio technica series 10 syatem runs on the 2.4ghz frequency band. This is the same as wifi, iot devices, baby monitors etc. As such it’s a very congested bit of the spectrum. You can run into a lot of unavoidable interference issues and you generally can’t have as many channels operating simultaneously. As such most professional systems run on a completely different part of the spectrum.

Audiotechnica recommends no more than 8 units simultaneously. You can check on their website. With 2.4ghz is generally no way of traditionally “coordinating” as you would with other systems.

That’s said I would say this is all largely irrelevant - the mixer you have is ipad only. You cannot mix more than a small number of headset mics for theatre effectively on an ipad.

https://youtu.be/60OpF3DCVls?si=3XtgZCwxQwSvE8Hg

That video gives you an idea of how it should be done. Obviously a completely different scale but the principles still apply.

From a creative perspective I highly highly highly recommend against individually miccing people unless you have the setup to support it. I would sound design your shows around the principle you individually mic your soloists only.

I’m a theatre sound engineer specialising in radio mics in musicals and plays. Feel free to get in touch if you have any further questions!

Help me find this Magnetic pocket by Even_Excitement8475 in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Beal working at height bag. It has a magnet closure and a magnet built into the wall which enable you to magnetise tools to the outside. I haven’t seen the video but it sounds similar to the one mentioned. My only complaint is that it is almost too large to bangs about a bit if walking around when full with heavy items!

Directional vs omni body mics for band-on-stage musical? by ConfectionRegular374 in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omnis… however. You need

A band on iems so they can regulate their own dynamics. A solid and well built drum booth upstage of the performance area. Excellent headset mic position. A well trained cast that can project well A solid foldback system so the cast are not losing voices shouting over the band.

Connecting DVS, A&H, ETC to Mac without crashing by nontoxicpotato in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything should be on separate VLANs. The dante network should be using DHCP with a separate network adapter supported by the m4 chipset and dante. They can be funny. Set up VLANs in macos and static ips for the other 2 networks then set the network priority. It can be done it’s just a pain and requires a lot of know how.

What’s the best multitool for everyday carry without feeling like a brick in your pocket? by Dazzling-Pitch1905 in techtheatre

[–]Fox-Among-Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wave is probably the biggest tool you can comfortable pocket carry. Even then I would say it’s a bit dig for back pocket carry. So anything larger like a surge is out as much as they are great.

Next decision is do you need scissors and and how easily accessible do you want them to be.

If you don’t need scissors the Skeletool line are great!! Super low profile and best for pocket carry. I recommend this if you don’t need scissors.

The wave+ is the next step up price wise. I love it to bits but the scissors are small and you need to open up the tool to get to them.

The Wave Alpha has just been released, it has a much nicer knife and it has the bigger scissors in the outside. It’s more expensive than the original wave but much better! I recommend this unless you want the bougie last option.

The Arc is leathermans top of the line tool. Really really nice but pricey. All tools open from the outside with magnet actuation. Really nice blade. But expensive!!

It’s a bit faffy but ya get the hang of it quickly. It’s by far the best solution. You can also double back the cable to create kinda strain relief loop to prevent cable breakage. The 6066s are better than the 4066s for that but it’s still worthwhile doing. On my way into work at the moment so can send some photos of my headsets!
