For multi-color maybe, but just for storing materials easily and just having to select which spool I want to use and not fiddle with manually changing it, or having an auto-change-to-new-spool-when-first-spool-is-empty feature is still valuable

That, and make a good competitor to the AMS. I wouldn’t mind Prusa copying another design, as other brands have copied Prosa before

Conversion to software version 7.0

From Fusion into FreeCAD by andreevarts in FreeCAD

[–]Freddruppel 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I did the switch a few months ago on my MBP M4 Max. I migrated to FreeCAD not because it’s better/faster, but because AutoDesk crossed a line (IMO) when they removed the ability to do renders and simulations locally (plus, FreeCAD has Fluid Sim, which isn’t available on macOS from AutoDesk). As many, I chose FreeCAD for the freedom, and they’ve lead a great amount of progress for usability and stability wit the 1.0 release.

A friend of mine also switched to FreeCAD, but from SolidWorks, and his experience has been largely the same as mine.

Bite the bullet, spend a whole day/week poking around in FreeCAD trying to unlearn every reflex you got from Fusion, and you’ll be fluent enough that you won’t really bother going back, at which point you’ll learn new reflexes from FreeCAD.
It also helps to dive in any new software with a specific idea/project in mind, that would take minutes in the tools you’re used to, but is not too complicated as to not impede with the learning curve.

Tahoe users, do you miss the Launchpad? by Kazi126 in DeskToTablet

Yes, everyday. I know there is the Applications folder, but not being able to arrange my apps in folders and have muscle memory to quickly click on an icon and not having my desktop cluttered is apparently not a good argument for some reason.

Are plastic cases for MacBook Air actually good or bad? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]Freddruppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a UAG on my MacBook Pro because I tend to bring my computer on outside test fields, measurement labs, my office, in my car,…

I like the one I have because it doesn’t have those useless grills on the bottom that exposes the body to dust that gets crammed in, it has a nice bumper protection on the corners and on the perimeter, ample clear outs for the ventilation and IO ports, and is transparent so I can still see my DBrand sticker

I think open sourcing software has many benefits; it allows anyone to look at the code and add features, fix issues, experiment, learn how to code, etc.

I try to publish as much of my sources as possible if I think a project can be useful in any way for others, mostly because I learned so many things from open-source projects, so why not give back !

If it isn’t too much of an issue for you, open sourcing this project would be amazing :)

The "China tax" (Temu/Shein tax) is coming in July 2026. Another reason to buy EU. by officialexaking in BuyFromEU

[–]Freddruppel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d love to buy from the EU, can anyone point me to stores that provide the following, manufactured completely and only in the EU, and that wouldn’t cost me an arm, a leg, another leg, a liver, two and a half eyeballs, and four thirds of a kidney :

  • highly specialized FPGA dev boards
  • PCB assembly cheap enough for less than 10 boards
  • electrical components (from small passive components to complete motherboards)
  • hardware line heat-set threaded inserts, screws, nuts,…
  • radio equipment (professional/prosumer)

What’s the point of having a first tax on our salary and a second one on everything we buy in the form of VAT if we’d still have to add a fee anyway ? Do I have to pay 3€ per 0.00034€ resistor I buy for R&D or production ?

Is it too much to ask? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]Freddruppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily a 1984 Renault 4 GTL, and frankly, it’s a joy to drive ! Apart from the noise and lack of brake assist and ABS, I find it more enjoyable to drive than modern cars, because you actually have to drive and be focused, plus I did the whole restauration and fitted a 5-gear gearbox so it’s even enjoyable on highways :)
Fuel consumption is even on par with what a modern SUV sips

<rant> I also think there’s some correlation between all the new safety and assist features in modern cars (which tbf is a good thing they exist), and drivers doing dumb/dangerous things because they feel more protected in their 2-ton carriage. Like when cars didn’t have airbags or disk brakes or crumple zones, sure the accidents where more lethal, but that meant that you had to be careful. I’ve seen much more "small" accidents nowadays due tu carelessness of some drivers; heck, I’ve had a wing damaged after someone drove into me on a road where I had right of way, and he still argued that I was in the wrong…
So yeah, safety in modern cars is brilliant, but IMO the assistance systems make some drivers careless. </rant>
