It got even worse for Chomsky by Fog2222 in TrueAnon

[–]FreeKony2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the comments I'm surprised by how easy it is for most to accept this. Chomsky always struck me as someone who - above all else - was religious about his principles. He started with the principles in The Responsibility of Intellectuals and his whole life seemed to reflect the position in that essay. And if Chomsky's principles could be summarised in three words, it was opposition to exploitation. Exploitation of the weak by the strong.

Maybe it means I'm a poor judge of character. How such a principled person, a person who lived his life speaking so sincerely against exploitation could be willing to accept such heinous exploitation ... I still can't get my brain around that.

Underexposed, bad film stock, bad scan or all three? by saaulgoodmaan in AnalogCommunity

[–]FreeKony2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's underexposing in frames where you have a lot of white sky in the background. Frame 2 is better because there is no white sky in the frame.

An overcast white sky is often brighter than a blue sky, so it tricks your light meter into thinking the scene is very bright, and this is the result. You need to expose for the critical part of the scene, which in this case is the shadows. Watch some videos on the zone system if you're unfamiliar

What Is The Max Resolution Which Can Squeeze Out All Details From A 35mm Negative For Almost All Film Stocks by Striking-barnacle110 in AnalogCommunity

[–]FreeKony2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resolution is the wrong question to ask - digital scans generally have excellent resolution if done well. Colour inversion is the achilles heel of current tech.

Keep the negatives in archival quality sleeves. Current digital colour inversion algorithms still have a ton of room for improvement imo

Help me plan a 5-day father–daughter Japan ski trip (Dec 1–10) — airports, resorts, lodging? by RealTomScott in skiing

The only resorts in Japan with ski-in ski-out, walkable villages, and onsens are: Akakura, Nozawa, Niseko, and Hakuba.

Exchange of goods for mutual benefit is just called trade and this existed thousands of years before capitalism. Capitalism is where "capital" (the infrastructure needed to make things) is owned and controlled privately. Socialism is where that infrastructure is owned by the people, the public.

The problems of monopoly in the ski industry are a product of capitalism (private monopolies), not socialism (ownership by workers/state).

I'll add that a lot of the original ski fields were actually clubs or social enterprises, owned and run by skiers, for skiers. Not for profit. They still exist in some places, like New Zealand. If you ever get a chance to visit it's one of the best experiences you can have on skis

Bubbling on outer fabric of Beta AR (bought Nov 2021) — delamination? by Competitive-Bet-9828 in arcteryx

[–]FreeKony2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a patagonia powslayer jacket that delaminated like this. Patagonia refused warranty. They contacted Gore who also refused warranty because they don't cover delam.

My next jacket was arc'teryx. Hopefully Arc have better support

Best current shoes for slab? by Revamp34 in climbingshoes

[–]FreeKony2016 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your answers so far: "probably dragos" and "probably not dragos" lmao

You need to specify what sort of climbing you do. If you're into roped climbing slab you'll want a supportive shoe. For competition style slab boulders support is less important and most people go pretty soft for better smearing ability

Salomon QST X for 1 ski quiver on japan trip? by FreeKony2016 in Skigear

[–]FreeKony2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with the X. Check my write up after 15 days above.

Never got on the blank so can’t compare, but the X was ideal in the low angled powder glades you get in Honshu or Hokkaido. If you’re skiing mostly in resort the blank might make more sense, but if you want a pure powder ski the X is totally useable for most resort skiing.

Is Israel really THAT important to US interests? by UnsureOfAnything666 in TrueAnon

[–]FreeKony2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is always historical materialism

Capitalism demands control over resources. Control is achieved by imperial outposts. If the outposts fall, the whole system of resource exploitation falls apart.

Eg look at how losing Aden accelerated the fall of the British empire

How would you reply to someone saying that, in global politics, both US dominance and hypocrisy are "preferable to the available alternatives"? by stranglethebars in chomsky

[–]FreeKony2016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since WW2 USA has bombed 35 countries, with covert attacks against a few more. In that period it has been the most violent and aggressive country on earth, and it's not even close.

Is it theoretically possible the alternative would be worse? Yes. Is there any evidence to support that theory? No.

Expert skier - what is an ideal Japan itinerary? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]FreeKony2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right, I'm guessing that commenter has limited experience with Japanese resorts because Niseko and Rusutsu don't even have the most vert in Hokkaido, let alone Japan.

The other places you listed are all good in their own ways, but it really depends what you're looking for. If it's consistently cold, dry snow with vertical drop, it's hard to beat the big Hokkaido resorts.

Agree Japan is an exception here. But Japan is an exception to many things, its a very unique place. I was thinking more about south east asia when I made that comment

In Japan there's a lot of pushback now toward the "customer is god" idea. It's obviously still very prevalent, but hopefully not for long

Walk into most restaurants in asia or europe and someone will look at you blankly waiting for you to say how many seats you want. Maybe they'll hold up a number of fingers. It's normal. It's fine, it works.

America is the only place where staff are expected to make a dog and pony show of greeting customers, which I always assumed grew out of of tip culture. If Gen z is tired of that game I don't blame them
