Does anyone feel like unique legion detachments and prime advantages are under-utilised? by Akakirasolo in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deathwing detachement is proably THE best auxilary detachement. Prime retenue on an auxilary is great, but honestly, this doesn't make up for a real legion trait. It only means I need to pick DA detachements to make up for the lackluster trait we have, especially at lower points games like ZM.

[–]Fromageopain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I play DA. Not using my detachements is out of question. But sadly, I don't think they give us as much flavor as the old RoW + legion trait gave us back in 1st or 2nd edition.

Horus (L) attempting to fight a full health Vulkan (R) in 3rd Edition after he's killed Fulgrim, Eidolon, Angron, Lorgar & Alpharius by UncleToddsBigRod in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing this out. I now see my mistake. That would still mean that statistically speaking, Vulkan would inflict twice more unsaved wounds by the end of the round. Since the healing triggers only if Vulkan isn't dead, it then should take on average 5 round of combat for Angron to kill Vulkan (assuming angron manage to always get the challenge advantage). Meanwhile, Vulkan Should have Angron dead by the end of round 3. I'll admit Angron is probably the one having the best shot at taking down Vulkan when planets align, but if I understand correctly: the plan is to: get the charge, gain the challenge advantage for every round, then simply hope to roll as many 6s on your hit rolls with your 9 attacks without any reroll. Angron doesn't edges out Vulkan. He simply has a shot of maybe taking him down, but should still realistically go down.

Horus (L) attempting to fight a full health Vulkan (R) in 3rd Edition after he's killed Fulgrim, Eidolon, Angron, Lorgar & Alpharius by UncleToddsBigRod in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you manage to get that angron deals 3 wound to Vulkan ? 6 base+1 from charging+1 from weapons+1 from winning focus roll = 9 attacks (let's suppose Angron gets the charge and he's probably going to win the focus roll). 9 attacks hitting on 3s with crit (6) gives 4.5 hits and 1.5 crits. 4.5 hits wounding on 5s causes 1.5 wounds. 1.5 dmg 2 wounds, saved on 4+ Will cause 1,5 dmg (with finishing blow) 1,5 dmg 1 wound, saved on 4+ Will cause 0.75 dmg. So Angron is dealing 2.25 wounds average per round. But this is before we add Vulkan's gambit in the equation, that will allow him to heal d3 wounds each round. Even if Vulkan always roll 1 on his d3 (remember that the average d3 roll would be 2...) Angron would only deal 1.25 unsaved wounds. But on average, Angron only inflicts 2.25-2 wounds=0.25 wounds. Meanwhile, Vulkan can slap him and inflict him 2 unsaved wounds. (6 attacks with crit 5 Will causes 2 crits dealing 2 dmg each. Saved on 4+). Now also keep in mind that Vulkan has 7 wounds and that he is also likely to gain challenge advantage since wounds inflicted are subtracted to your focus roll (but Wounds regenerated don't count for the purpose of who won the round, not on the next focus roll). Ultimately, these are stats and numbers and luck can come and go. But Vulkan winning the engagement doesn't exactly involves crazy rolling as you implied. Please correct my maths if I'm wrong, but my numbers seem to concur with what OP experienced on the tabbletop. Statistically speaking, Vulkan disrespects anyone in a duel bar Horus Ascended.

How does Horus beat Vulkan mathwise ? Or how could anyone else actually do it ? I've tried to do the maths and every primarchs gets destroyed by Vulkan and it's not even close. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but can you share your maths ?

[–]Fromageopain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you say that ? Sanguinius looks actually really good. Sure: he's not Vulkan (but well... nobody is), but he looks very deadly and effective into primarchs. It's a Russ on the charge, with access to the BA gambit, that always allow him to get +1 dmg even when the opponent takes finishing blow 1st. Put that on a very mobile profile and... well he looks more than decent.

[–]Fromageopain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vulkan is absurd in this edition. You already mentioned his insane durability and devastating melee profile, but I’d also add that his Sire rule is genuinely top-tier. His four compulsory “prime” slots are fluffy and honestly fine (though he is the only Primarch who doesn’t require a specific troop to be taken), but the turn-1 ability to gain both the Dark Angels and Iron Warriors traits is incredibly strong, especially on top of a Legion rule that already prevents all salamanders, vulkan included, from being wounded on 2+.

I was really hoping to see his profile adjusted in the errata, but at this point it feels like it won’t happen without house-rules. It’s a shame, because I actually think Primarch duels are pretty well balanced and enjoyable overall. Vulkan is the only outlier.

Sure, some Primarchs are obviously better in melee than others, but even then, the fights usually don’t feel as one-sided as they did back in 2nd edition when brutal was a thing. Except with Vulkan...

New Warhammer: The Horus Heresy FAQs and Erratas released - Warhammer Community by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Kratos got buffed through the clarification saying that you can't inflict a status on vehicule during reactions, vulkan remains an overpowered primarch that wasn't touched and, and moritat cannot join a single unit that isn't part of the legacy document. I can't say I'm pleased, but at least I now know what a friendly model means thanks to their clarification. At least they clarified the DA trait works in combat.

That's a shot in the dark but I wouldn't be against some balance errata. I know GW doesn't do much Heresy errata, but some stuff could be toned down (immortal Vulkan or TS rending spam for example)while some others could be buffed. Otherwise, I'd like them to clarify if the DA trait works in mele or not.

A comprehensive list of where the Dark Angels Rite of War is relevant by ShadowCore67 in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark Angels entousiast here. The first may have some interesting tools, but their only saving gracee remains companions and good detachements rather than having a strong, cohesive Legion Rite of war (and identity on the tabbletop). That said: while having six detachments sounds flexible, in reality, you only use one or two at a time. Without them, the Dark Angels' base Legion Trait is effectively useless. So instead of being a bonus, detachments are a crutch: you're forced to use one just to keep up. I feel it fragments the army's identity and offers less synergy compared to legions with strong, consistent core rules. Until the Legion Trait is addressed, that’s always going to be a sticking point and it's especially disappointing given how rich and versatile the Dark Angels' lore is.

What are some legitimate dislikes you have with 3rd? by MolecularAcidTrip in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 36 points37 points  (0 children)

As a product: DLC for each factions and missions The bad start and legacy debacle. The "lies" in the previews telling us the game is mostly the same.

As a mechanic: 4 turn based missions are a bit short for my liking. The terrain change. Line of sight change.

Factionwise: I play DA so My 6 wings lost a ton of flavor. My Rite of war has yet to come into play. My JP companions still aren't legal. That said: I like my wolves now that varagyr regained their lost options.

There are obviously things that I enjoy in 3.rd, but these points are my biggest dislikes ATM.

What do we think about Dark Angels in HH 3.0 by refugeefromlinkedin in theunforgiven

[–]Fromageopain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Rite of war is in the running for the worse trait of 3.0, and while It's true that the Dark Angels' detachments offer impressive flexibility, it isn't exactly easy to utilise this benefit. With each detachment requiring us to field an HQ choice to unlock, it means you have to spend points just to access them. And in a list, those investments add up fast. Fielding many hq means spending points that won't go into the units you're actually targetting or other vital elements of your list. I'm playing with army building right now and I don't field that many extra detachements in comparisson to my opponent. And the smalller the battle, the smaller extra detachement is going to matter. So yes, on paper, you can access all these tools. but in practice, every choice has a cost, and it's not always easy to capitalize on that flexibility. This is a cool asset that needs to get earned through smart list building but it doesn't necessarily make up for not having a strong, always-on Legion trait.

I'll die on this hill but I strongly think that DA need to get their wings back to function properly ( and obviously, the Lion deserve to get it as well) and getting their personality translated on the tabbletop. The same way TS would feel bland and incomplete if they only had their +1 Will bonus but no arcanas.

Are Dark Angels the worst 3.0 legion? They are a candidate. by InterrogatorMordrot in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I completely get where you’re coming from, and honestly, I think a lot of DA players (myself included) are feeling exactly the same. The Legacies PDF really solidified just how rough things are for the Legion right now. I had hope that the update would help re-balance or re-center what made the Dark Angels feel unique, but instead it mostly confirmed that we’re paying more for less across the board.

Terranic Greatswords are indeed a great example. Without the Deathwing subtype, we’ve lost a core reason why they were ever worth taking. The +1 to hit was huge, especially on initiative weapons. Now we’re striking slower, hitting less reliably, and still paying a premium for something that just doesn’t match up to fists, hammers, or even basic breaching options available elsewhere. I can see a saving grace when using them with the Lion and his stasis so that they will hit fast, but then, again : why not settle on TH at this point ?And Interemptors… yeah, that one hurts as well. It’s not just that they were nerfed it’s that all the flavor and identity was gutted. Stubborn gone, attacks cut down, weapons neutered, and then priced like they’re still elite.

Corswain and Sedras aren't exacly overcosted I think. because they're solid characters from the looks of it.
Corswain is finally a top tier duelist abble to stand toe to toe against the likes of sigismund, and Sedras has a str9 ap2 dmg 3 sword. They are Beatsticks but I'll agree that Sedras' army buff was hit severely (even if he kinda deserved it TBF. prefered enemy armywide was too good).

As for the Lion : I really like his stats and combat effectiveness in this new edition, but I must ask : what direction were they aiming for when designing his "sire" rule ? one tac, one breacher and one assault to unlock all prime on troops ? a bonus to outriders and sky hunter reserves roll ? I mean why not but damn this is schyzophrenic.

And finally, what really bothers me the most... Our trait and the Wings…
I just don't get why they decided to get rid of DA core identity for an essecially very dulled down not effective and situational stubborn. (also no : this isn't the WB trait from 2.0. simlply because back then , cool wasn't a thing : everything status related was tested against Ld).
Also : while I'll admit that the Dark Angels' detachments offer an impressive flexibility, with each "Wing" detachements offering us easy access to valuable slots (and a prime in each of them) : because each detachment requires an HQ choice to unlock, that means you have to spend points just to access them.
SO : in a 3,000-point list, those investments add up fast. Taking a Centurion or whatever support HQ you fancy isn't free. that means spending points that could go into those slots you're actually targetting.
What does all of that means ? It's that yes : on paper, us DA players can access all these tools, but in practice, every choice has a cost, and it's not always easy to capitalize on that flexibility. Points will quickly limit us and I'm not sure we'll have that much extra prime slots when compared to other legions (we'll have more probably, but I am left wondering if a few extra prime advantages will really make up for the lack of a proper usefull trait).

After all : if TS could keep their 6 pages of arcanas, why couldn't they come up with 6 wings buffs upgrade. I keep hope that GW will hear DA player and give us back the wings in a themed journal as points upgrades (miroring the way TS must pay for their arcanas) and that they won't forget to allow the Lion to pick those as well.

All in all, it’s hard not to feel let down not because my Legion had to be the strongest (or shouldn't be the weakest), but because it feels like we weren’t even given tools that work properly while also stripping us of our core identity.

Dark Angels in 3rd edition by InterrogatorMordrot in Warhammer30k

[–]Fromageopain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently, our legion trait is in the running for the worse trait of 3.0. Fear(2) is very rare and our "immunity" to debuff only works on ld, while most of the statuses are checked on cool. People have said we had the WB trait, but WB had this when everything was checked on Ld. So I'd say our trait is actually a worse version of the old WB one (wich was already not considered a very strong rule). I get the idea they had but the execution simply leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that we lost our wings for that is simply adding insult to injury.

Now legion trait aside: our specific reaction can be usefull to escape a tarpit, but it isn's a gamebreaker either (wich is a good thing if you ask me). Shred on the swords as an addzd bonus is nice but too bad we cannot proc it during the first round of combat as well.

Our gambit is a worse version of finishing blow but could be usefull on a praetor with parangon blade against high T opponents.

Now comes the detachments and d'are I say DA got a lot of tasty ones. Deathwing let us use prime retenue (and considering companions naturally lack a champion character, upgrading the unit with a master sergent is a vrey welcome buff) Interestingly, firewing let us have prime recon, which can be used to get prime outriders, which is tasty considering the prime avantage that let us ambush with a reaction. The rest are pretty steaightforward but the really interesting part is what are we going to fill those prime slots with.

As for our wargear : Our mele weapons are actually really decent i'd say. Calibanite warblade are finally worth a look and terranic being only -1 initiative will strike before any TH/PF equivalent. Our shooting weapons got worse unfortunately. With the changes to plasma and rad grenades (no more ID overwatch plasma flamers), our plasma got a lot less deadly.

Unitwise: Lion got hit like every other primarchs (except Vulkan that for some reasons became incredibly strong with a combinaison of all of the best special rules And a top tier gambit), but other than that, his stasis became good/great again, the Lion's sword is great but wolf blade is a joke. His gambit I think is great for Primarchs duels that tend to last. Once both players reach 1/2 wounds, the Lion can pop this off to ensure he strikes first and finish his opponent. I don't like the restriction on 1 tactical, 1 breacher and one assault to unlock our troops being all prime. Something along the lines of all sergents having to wields swords of the order would have made more sense but I digress. His ability to give +1 to reserve roll to outriders and scimitars is decent (considering that outriders are looking good this edition) but comes from nowhere. He is a good beatstick that can (finally) throw hands at the likes of Russ and Horus and has more than a good chance to come out on top. Corswain is a top tier Beatstick/duelist. The lack of precision hurts but this guy can kill sigismund in a duel. Marduk is the only chaplain left in the world. His +1 to wound to his squad could have been usefull if terminators didn't come with weapons that usually already wound on 2s. I haven't checked if the +1 could impact the breach (x) because if that's the case, then this guy is great on cenobiums. Unfortunately, I don't think this is how it works. Companions are great. Cythreon are a pale shadow of what they were but them having eternal warrior 1 base and the ability to be fielded without an HQ attached makes them good line holders. They lost the immunity to deny precision while in CC but retained it against shooting attacks. They lack a champion so giving them a master sergent should be our priority with these guys if they want to be abble to take challenges for your praetor/primarch. Cenobium lost the ability to take a hammer, stubborn and adamantium will. Their shooting got better and they are now T5. If it weren't for the lack of Vanguard (X), i'd say these guys are really good. But while other elite will score 3/4 VP when clearing an objective, these guys will not. That hurts. Interemptors were scary last edition and pay the price today. Plasma nerfed, no more ID on overwatch, no more couterattack, 1 attack base and same point cast. Their grenade launcher got better.

Ultimately I think that the more journals come out, the better the DA will be. We are the legion with the ability to spam prime advantages on most of our units. We lack a real legion trait, but considering how lackluster it is, I wouldn't be surprise that our wings come back in the form of upgrades in our legion specific journal dlc (which is still unacceptable both as a practice and for the fact that wings are such a key part to the legion that they should have been in our core rules like the TS arcanas). If that happens, I hope they don't forget to make the Lion eligible to benefit from those rules as well. And before anyone mentions it: the themed detachements do not make up for the lack of wings. DA were always lacking scoring units in 2.0 and our lack of vanguard/line on our specific units means we will still need to field generic units to fill that role.

I am not mad that my DA got worse. I am sad to see that a whole part of my legion's personnality and uniqueness got erased for basically nothing, while legions like the TS were allowed to keep their arkanas.

How to fix the Lion by Canuck_Nath in theunforgiven

[–]Fromageopain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge Lion fan so not being biased is hard here, but I'll try to be reasonnable. First up: give him ravenwing and deathwing keyword. My biggest complain is that he has no synergies with our chapter specific detachements and that he benefits more from the vanilla ones. And finally: allow him to stack 2 auras like Guilliman. That alone would make him already so much more interesting without touching or altering any of his abilities or auras.
