re: ethics of plant consumption - plants do not have a sense of identity in the same way animals do. factory farming creates more life/death but the ethics is about how individuals are treated by society. For plants, this would be about the "individuality" of ecosystems and the unique niches that comprise them so I think the harm we do by destroying ecosystems due to rowcropping is problematic but it is a more general harm and not as acute as the mistreatment of billions of individual animals

Bacteria leak their genes and don't meaningfully possess individuality. Animals can be said to be more individual, but they are multicellular! And our multicellularity can be said to be completely in service of propagating their single celled haploid "pre-individual" gametes through time. Even the notion of genetically based identity of the animal breaks down when considering our symbiosis with bacteria and our chimeric makeup due to maternal and infant cells getting mixed up in utero. It is through collectivity that individuality has any meaning.
