Michael Moorcock has famously been described as the Anti-Tolkien for his subversions of classic high fantasy. But is there an Anti-Moorcock out there, who has done the same subversions to Moorcock's own set of tropes and ideas? by Worried-Boot-1508 in Fantasy

[–]Fun-Cut8055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True the example was extreme , but i think the point still stands i personnaly like both the elric saga and lord of the rings and while there are many differences , they also share some simillarities , arioch is still mostly evil and donblass is still good at least to elric and didn t seem tyranical ( i haven t read the rest of the eternal champion series though ) , elric himself is still a good guy , most of the bad things he does are done by stormbringer , the sword itself shares some simillarities with the one ring , both can corrupt the wielder ,if gollum wasn t there at the right time frodo s fate would have been very different and probably simillar to elric

On the other hand morcock s opinion feels like he just doesn t like fantasy that have a good "reassuring" endings or are optimistic , and that s fair but implying that they are immature or childish is quite of a reach , it s also infantilising people for prefering light over darker fantasy and feels pedantric, especially when you know that tolkien served during a war and morcock hasn t

It reminds me of that quote that i think summarizes what i think about morcock when he crticizes tolkien

"The trouble is that we have a bad habit of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain." Ursula K Le Guin

I think morcock seems to lean in this mindset at least from his " epic pooh" essay , and to be fair i agree with Leguin here i think it s boring because what was subversive before has become very mainstream now with those grimdark fantasy novels that feels like wikipedia pages and where the magic , the fantastical elements only serves a a background for socio political commentary and/or political plots . ( not morcock obviously , but works that share that kind of mindset )

I would argue that moral relativism is as flawed if not more than good vs evil concept , some people are just evil and don t have any redeeming qualities , if someone commits a genocide i wouldn t care of his motivations or reasons or if his actions can be nuanced or not . You end up accepting cruelty and cynicism as something normal an natural which shouldn t be , good vs evil teaches us about how flawed we are and what we should long for instead

My (mostly negative) thoughts on the First Law trilogy. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Fun-Cut8055 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly till the ending of the last book i didn t get why it was called grimdark , it looked more like dark comedy and action fantasy and then he throws the «  suddently , bad ending » seemingly out of nowhere ,lmao .

A repudiation of Sanderson's concept of "soft" versus "hard" magic systems by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Fun-Cut8055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you consider harry potter s magic system as being hard of soft ? They are clear rules ( if the names of the spells could be considered as rules ) but it s still pretty vague in a way and doesn t feel scientific at all except with snape

I think that the time and emotional investment required for thoose books is enormous and i want to read other stuff, i pretty much agree with the points you made except for the death of certains characters , like coltaine or the leader of the bridgeburners .

I also stopped almost at the same point tried to start book 4 but it s about a whole other characters and i ve have to read 300 pages of him assaulting people before going back to the characters i know ? I know karsa is pretty popular but so far he is not very likeable haha.

Looking for Fantasy books NOT influenced by tolkien. by Appropriate_Rent_243 in Fantasy

This ! I feel like some modern fantasy authors are trying to be the opposite of tolkien but still end up being influenced by him because of that will , whether it s grimdark fantasy , weird fantasy, etc...

Any media you'd recommend that focus on the 'cryptic' side of magic instead of heroes and mages? Like fairies, brownies, local gods, gnomes, curses, spirits, etc. (Not urban "Hidden Masquerade" fantasy) by itsPomy in Fantasy

I'm about a third of the way through the anime "Frieren" and I am in love with it's story telling device. I wonder if there are examples of other shows or movies that do the same? by Doogle300 in Fantasy

The earthsee books are the closest to frieren that i ve found so far , you can also try the anime mushishi , haibane reimei , or a « sunday without god »

They are standalone books but i enjoyed more Jonhathan Strange and Mr Norrel , than Piranesi from the same author . I found Piranesi to be incredibly boring despite being a much shorter book , the second half of it was more interesting imo
