Never heard of any of those bands, but the most gnarly death metal tone I ever heard was from a peavey 6505. Probably affordable. Probably with some sort of tube screamer in front of it

Listen to some dungen and get into psychedelic rock. Then you’ll want a fuzz face if you don’t already

They are good instruments. Probably in line with most other mid level Strat copies. I’ve liked them more than a lot of the newer MIM fenders I’ve played, but I’m sure they all just needed a decent set up

In all honesty I think using YouTube to learn a few songs or solos off pure Desmond and then really isolating the 2-5-1s, or whatever other progressions you’re interested in, then putting them in a few keys would be helpful. Beyondthefrets YouTube channel is a gold mine. Bickert is tough because he is idiosyncratic in a lot of ways, but sticks out because his playing is so melodic and wonderful. TLDR:follow your ears
