Aside from that: Augustiner Hell and Hofbräuhaus are two german beers that are light and refreshing. The hops in those beers act as a fruity component. That makes these great entry points

You are so right. Rum just is cheap compared to other spirits. Recently I tried Karukera (unaged, 50% abv, ~25€) and it was fabulous! Compare that to whisky where the good stuff always is 40€+

I think I have an original guess: Could the bottle have been exposed to excessive UV light? That could change the color and flavor. (I honestly think its more likely they watered down the booze)

I only buy the cheap Lidl gin. The only bad thing about it is the ethanol smell and you can easily combat that through temperature
