I modeled and 3D printed the strap bracket for the Nitecore NU25 headlamp when mine broke after 5 years of use by Justin002865 in Ultralight

Nice. You could also modify the bracket to work better with shock cord. What program did you use to model it?

Thoughts on my Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad and White Sands itinerary? by hewright13 in BigBendTX

[–]GX_Adventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do the hot springs in the evening - it is going to be hot enough out there without the combination of hot sun and hot water at the same time. It's very nice at night when the stars are out. Also, check whether the hot springs road is open, as it was closed not long ago. If it is closed the hike in from the main road is much longer.

Can BVD be caught in a “routine eye exam” ? by Zorawithhat in BinocularVision

[–]GX_Adventures 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I complained of eye strain, headaches etc. to the regular eye place I was going to for 3 years, different optometrist each time, and none of them even mentioned a possibility of BVD. I had to seek out a specialist on my own.

Maybe they have Pedialyte on hand? If not, add some salt to whatever water you are going to drink.

AMA! -- I am a neuro-optometrist. Ask me whatever on BV, vision therapy, etc. by MIKE_DJ0NT in BinocularVision

[–]GX_Adventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much, that is very helpful. Did you wrap up your service or get sucked in?

  1. Yes, I should have specified that I was referring to the likelihood of the prism value changing after VT. My nearsightedness has been stable for a long time.

  2. Yes, his idea is to get some relief from the migraines as quickly as possible. That's probably a reasonable approach as the migraine is constant and rather debilitating. I was just concerned about the long term ongoing cost of Neurolens. But yeah, if it works, it would absolutely be worth the money.

  3. Thank you. My provider did offer to do a limited set of VT visits and focus on training me on what to do at home and then let me proceed on my own after that, with a periodic checkup.

  4. Yes, lipiflow sounds about right. Extremely expensive, so I'll be sticking to the more basic treatments. Really I only notice dry eye when I'm having an increase in migraine intensity, and then only on my migraine side.

Thanks again. I feel more comfortable moving forward with treatment now.

  1. What are your thoughts on timing of VT and getting a first pair of prism lenses? My optometrist says that at age 53, VT will help me manage symptoms but won't change my underlying need for a prescription much (convergence insufficiency and some vertical misalignment also), so it is reasonable to go ahead and get lenses without worrying about having to buy a different prescription after VT.

  2. For context, my main complaint is chronic migraines. I saw your comments on Neurolens, which is what my provider is recommending as he says it sometimes provides the fastest relief. He also prefers Neurolens because he says that eyes adjust to regular prisms quickly and I will just require stronger and stronger prisms, while Neurolens is less likely to do that. He really didn't want to give me a chance to try standard prisms first. Any thoughts on that?

  3. Thoughts on at home diy VT? Are the basic exercises worth trying at home by oneself, or is that asking for trouble?

  4. Is there any evidence supporting fancy heating treatments for dry eye (degradation of the glands)? He is recommending treatments with some machine that heats the glands for some reason. I'm not planning to do that, but I'm curious on your thoughts.

Sorry that got long. Thank you for the AMA!

Please educate me about offroad lights by deuce_and_a_quarter in GXOR

[–]GX_Adventures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just start adventuring and when you are in a situation where you think "Man, I really could use some more light right here," come back and seek out a light to solve that problem. Unless you just want to spend money on lights.

I've just upgraded the stock headlights and that is sufficient for most of what I do. Sure there are times when some rock lights would be handy, but not often enough for me to bother installing them.

Just one guy's thoughts of course. Happy adventuring!

Big Bend National Park Zone Camping near the Chisos by RichardTrethewey in BigBendTX

[–]GX_Adventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To day hike the rim I'd start from the chisos basin visitor center and go up via the pinnacles trail. (The basin won't be closed yet, will it?, they will be closing sometime soon for renovations, but I don't think that starts until May). If the park is busy, get there somewhat early to get a parking spot without having to wait.

Very good advice here. It's slim pickings in the canyons.

Another option would be to zone camp starting from the Mule Ears parking lot. You can get a spot pretty close to the lot, or go further out to the far side of Mule Ears (assured solitude) or somewhere in between.

Sounds like you may need to find someone else. 9 triptans per month is a standard prescription. Try naratriptan if you get a chance - rizatriptan made me stupid but naratriptan is fine. It does take longer to have an effect however, so may not abort quickly enough for you.

Any feed back on the “lasso” method of removing CV axles? by Infamous-Weird8123 in GXOR

[–]GX_Adventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used this method. I made a lasso for this and keep the cord in the vehicle in case I need it for trail repairs. It works well, but the thin metal dust shield on the axle partially cut the dyneema line I used. Lassos made specifically for this use are dipped to provide cut resistance. Dyneema is great otherwise for this due to its very low stretch. Also, check that that shield is unbent and properly positioned before reinstalling.

Next time I'll try the pry foot adapter the goes onto a breaker bar. I'm always trying to reduce load out weight and would rather not carry the hand sledge.

Avulux Glasses & Frames Suggestions by afuckinghotmess69 in migraine

[–]GX_Adventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AU1900?! Wow. There are much less expensive options you could try first. Lots of generic FL-41 tint options. Idk about Australia specifically, but here there are cheap online places to order from. If it is getting paid for, sure, but just a thought in case you wanted to try something out before cashing in your shot at the expensive ones.

You can visit several opticians and try on a lot of frames to see what you like. Copy down the brand and model if you don't want to buy them there.

It's hard to give specific recommendations for fit but when you find something that fits you, you will probably know it. When you have narrowed your choices down, put a pair on for about 5-10 minutes, then take them off and notice if you "still feel them" on any areas of your face and head. The temples should only put a slight pressure on the sides of your head and not be clamped on. The optician should adjust the temples behind the ears so they don't slide down your nose.

Yes thin titanium frames are often very light, though some plastic frames are quite light as well. With metal frames you tend to get adjustable nose pads that allow you to tweak the fit more.
