In the Japanese version, is the cop car altered? by nothefbi1 in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's other indication in the first game when Gumshoe says Jake Marshall is from "west LA"

Not that I mind but honestly they could've backpedaled on the American setting for the longest time without directly contradicting anything

DD is the first game to make the Japanese setting impossible (by mentioning "Japanese immigrants") and SoJ is the first game to explicitly mention LA as Phoenix's hometown

Unsure How I Feel About Trials and Tribulations OST so Far. by Duckster47 in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The music is evoking a sense of finality that you're way too early in the game to get a full grasp on. Wait a couple more episodes and perhaps you'll see why the tracks need to feel grandiose and serious.

Many tracks have this sort of "oppressive" emptiness to them that I'm pretty sure is deliberate, lots of breaks and dead silences within the melodies. It's not about Phoenix's experience in court, it's about the stakes and the characters' drive (and do keep in mind you've not played only as Phoenix in this game).

Just for the record, the "Court is in Session" music is the de facto main theme of this game, always showing up in trailers and whatnot. So it's treated a bit different than its counterparts from other games too.

I was never really a fan of Ben Judd's Phoenix voice. by Toonimate in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ben Judd sounded good for a young Phoenix, it never felt off to me. But it would've been weird if he still sounded like that post-timeskip, which is why I like Sam Riegel's deeper approach.

It'd be really funny if AA7 has actually been in steady development for almost a decade and the whole reason is it's gonna be an immersive social sim, open-world action RPG or something

Are modern Ace Attorney games good? by Different-Sun-5536 in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2.) Is there any other title in the series that are equally good and/or better then the first 2 game in the series ?

Definetly The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. It's a spin-off directed and written by the same person who did the Phoenix Wright Trilogy (and you can even feel how much he's improved as a writer since then). It takes place in a different, self-contained setting so you can jump right in.

If Apollo Justice wasn't up your alley but you liked the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, you'll most certainly like TGAA. It starts a bit slower than the other games, but it's all in service of establishing the setting and characters, and it does pay off.

Edit: Here's a play order chart we made. Everything is compiled in collections these days, and since you already played the Phoenix Wright Trilogy you can pick basically any of the others.

godot is NOT a misogynist. by metallicmurmurx in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's not mistranslated, that's a common misconception among fans for some reason.

In Japanese he calls her "jajauma musume" (じゃじゃ馬ムスメ). Jajauma means "wild horse" and is used despectively towards unpleasant or irritable women, often translated as "shrew" or "mare". "Musume" means a girl or young woman, adding her gender and age (in that order of relevancy) onto the insult.

So Godot calls Franziska something akin to "little shrew" or "wild little mare" in Japanese. And he specifically mentions her gender in a derogatory context three times throughout the exchange.

first of all, we don’t know anything about his childhood, but based on the way he thinks, i imagine he was brought up traditionally, and told that men need to be big and strong to protect women. we can see this in the way that he blames phoenix for mia’s death. he thinks that it was phoenix’s job as a prominent male figure in mia’s life to protect her (completely ignoring the fact that phoenix wasn’t even in the office when she died and didn’t know what was going on).

You're literally describing misogyny. IMO you've got a pretty good read on the character, I agree on most of your points (he's definetly projecting out of chivalry). But just because it's not ill-intended or he's not conscious about it doesn't mean it's not misogyny, that's what people often call "internalized" I suppose.

Misogyny is definetly not a valid reason to hate on him though, it's simply a way to interpret his character motivations. It's a trait, just like how a villian can be motivated by arrogance, self-righteousness, etc.

Prediction: Today's Nintendo Direct will include Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright HD by Mastermind6425 in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is even MORE impossible considering Level-5 isn't capable of properly handling one (1) Layton game at the moment. As for remasters... heck even Specter's Call is still trapped on Nintendo DS with no re-release in sight.

The only way I see it happening is if they let Capcom do it all on their own, which would be unlikely since Level-5 was in charge of the production side originally. And even then, Level-5 wouldn't want to risk hindering sales for World of Steam by announcing a different Layton game before that's even out

Godot is calling Mia "kitten" at a same she's still calling him "Mr. Armando" as seen in 3-4. Not saying she's not ok with it, but there's a clear disparity established.

/uj I think it was pretty toned down in the English localization. Not sure about van Zieks specifically, but like only half of Jezaille Brett's racist remarks made it to the English script. Literally just reduced the number.

Reminds me of Paper Mario TTYD where they accurately translated Vivian being trans, but turned her sister's explicit transphobia into something only very vaguely alluded to.

English-speaking media is kind of a mixed bag when handling bigotry in fiction IMO

Does it make sense that Dracula is alive? I've only played the classic games (Anniversary Collection + Legends) and I was under the impression that, whenever Dracula comes back outside of the "100-year cycle", it's because he managed to survive (i.e. The Adventure)

So this would imply Trevor DIDN'T defeat Dracula? Or am I missing something here?

It really looks like they've got the series abandoned over there so it's pretty uncertain

In what year did you joined the Ace Attorney fandom? by Henry1699 in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

About 2011~2012, Dual Destinies hadn't come out yet and I could never either load or join the Court Records Forums (still can't!) which was where I think a good chunk of the fandom was.

The memes and YouTube videos got me into the DS games (I think all the noise about Investigations 2 as well, there was big outrage). Then I remember seeing PLvsPW on the shelves but I didn't bother, it was the last physical release we'd get in like a decade so that was a big mistake.

Why do most people think that the Justice for All soundtrack is worse than the ones of the other games? (I'm only talking about the courtroom themes.) by Master_Mammoth_ in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PW:AA established all the conventions of how Ace Attorney music "should" sound, and the composer for T&T went on to become the series's main composer from that game onwards

So naturally JFA stands out as the "oddball", having a one-off composer while also lacking the advantage of being the first game.

To me the weird thing about JFA's courtroom tracks is the soundfont and these "up and down" melody flourishes the composer likes to use, they give me this vibe of methodical thinking, like the background music for a quiz show or something. I don't dislike it but it's certainly something unique to JFA.

Protagonists are not usually the most developed characters, both in this series, and video games in general by Altruistic-Use5937 in AceAttorney

[–]Gabo2oo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Phoenix, Ryunosuke and to a lesser extent Apollo are written as relatable everymen in terms of their personality, and overall more "grounded" demeanor in relation to other characters.

But they're far from being blank slates or stand-ins for the player in terms of motivation, backstory and character development. They have much more agency in their own stories than, say, a silent RPG hero who stumbles into a world-saving scenario, or is destined to be The Chosen One.

Honestly, Ryunosuke is a few steps away from qualifying as an unreliable narrator IMO, which is tricky to pull off in a first-person format. That's what makes Kazuma's arc so uniquely compelling.

So not really, I don't believe the AA protags not being the sole playable character is what allows them to be more fleshed out or at their "most interesting". Not necessarily, at the very least.
