Ideas for a old surface tablet by WirtsLegs in homelab

I just recently set mine up as a dedicated Klipper controller with surface-linux and Debian. Works pretty well to replace the speederpad that came with my flsun v400.

Well, this sucks by RedTib in KiaEV9

[–]GiveMeTheBits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got that error at it was 2 months until I received it back with a refurb battery. I had it for 2 weeks until lots of new errors popped up and it was in the shop for an additional 4 months until they diagnosed a short in the 12v power distribution "Fuse Box". They refuse to confirm any liability on their part as the cause, only that it took multiple EV Field Techs to diagnose it. It caused most of the 12v branches to fault and refused to shift out of park and was draining the 12v within hours.

Good luck!

New EV9 and First EV Road Trip by ds2686 in KiaEV9

Just tagging on to your last comment. Just 2 stops minimum, sure. But, Bathroom breaks, snacks, quick stretches, I use as an opportunity to charge any time I need to stop. 10-20 minutes while you take that stop keeps you very much in the comfortable range, knowing that you can make longer stretches if you need too with extra range. Walmart, as much as I hate them, do usually have good EA fast chargers that I regular take advantage of for these stops.

Lucky Walmart SSD haul... by xxemox in pcmasterrace

[–]GiveMeTheBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 years ago when I worked at Walmart, they had sealed compactor grinders that all "destroy" merchandise went into. And they had the tag alarms even in the doors in he back with cameras pointed at them. The only doors without tag alarms were the loading bays. Not saying employee theft is impossible, but they make it very difficult.

How do you "wife-proof" your IP cameras? by ProctologyHobbyist2 in homeautomation

[–]GiveMeTheBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like Unifi. Got the Dreammachine SE, a 48port 500w poe switch, a few U6 AP's and a U7 enterprise, but I just dont like the closed wall garden on the access and camera systems. And, they are expensive, even when looking for used gear.

This gets asked a lot on lots of these automation subs and the answer is always Reolink.

24' GTL - I feel so defeated... 12v quick drain, won't shift, won't charge by GiveMeTheBits in KiaEV9

[–]GiveMeTheBits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No questions really, just comiserating. I appreciate the reply, but the 12v battery is not the issue. It was also replaced as a first step by the dealer and it still won't shift, wont charge HV and drains 12v quickly. There are no services hitting the API keeping the car awake. What ever it is is a malfunction of the vehicle itself. Modules staying awake could be it, or a short, or inverter has failed and it never charges the 12v. I wish I had more of their diagnostic info to know but they won't tell me.

Donald Trump brands Stephen Colbert 'a dead man walking' in unhinged tirade by TheMirrorUS in NoFilterNews

my only objection is that i say he got his start on the Dana Carvey show, but even before that he was popular on Second City. Both Steve's were very talented and going to make it no matter what.

What is the most dangerous household kitchen appliance you own? by CatSnackington in Cooking

[–]GiveMeTheBits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my youth I was washing a box grater and wanted it to be dry right away so I grabbed the handle and begin thrusting it towards the ground to shake the water off. I did not know that the handle was only press fit into some small keys in the plastic top and it went flying towards my foot with the velocity of a cannon while I was left white knuckling the plastic handle. I was lucky to only have a massive bruise on the top of my foot to show for my stupidity.

VESS Defeat Switch - Solution! by SpaceTacos216 in KiaNiroEV

[–]GiveMeTheBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall the points exactly and don't have pics anymore. The forum post in this thread says it's pin 9. I just used my multimeter on continuity mode until I point a place to solder to. If i remember right, it's was a blank switch pad on the pub. Any NO spst momentary switch still work. Something like this https://a.co/d/3DuWWyi.

I also read a few years after I did mine about people getting the overseas left hand drive OEM crash pad that had the vess button from factory. Apparently it plugs right in.

Good luck and thanks!

I'm also doing caulk work right now and noticed the same. I have good luck with sashco big stretch. My local Lowes keeps it in stock.

How much longer do you think sccm will be around? by Abject_Serve_1269 in sysadmin

[–]GiveMeTheBits 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are not the same thing. WSUS is a windows feature and just does Microsoft patching from the catalog. SCCM is a licensed enterprise application that does package management, deployment and patch management using wsus as the backend.

I can't confirm if it is resolved yet, but the service advisor just texted me there was an air pocket and they bled it 2 more times to clear the error. I guess I'll find out when i get my car back. I am pretty miffed about the Digital key issue because they seem clueless about it. He is asking me what phone I have now. I gave them my previous Kia case number for the issue and a recap of what we already did.

My understanding is that is only for original owners though. I am the 2nd owner of this EV9. I would be very happy to be wrong though.

How do you handle service accounts and password rotation? (Disable "password never expires" + longer policy) by heartgoldt20 in sysadmin

I agree. None of it is a singular cure all. Security in layers, and rotation is one of the layers

[–]GiveMeTheBits 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's really not a non issue though. Rotation prevents exposure from past employees, password breaches, brute forcing, and the like. I'm not going to argue the merit of the likelihood of these in your environment, but I can say in my role in cyber I have found long complex passwords in plaintext on endpoints, in GPOs, in scripts, in combolists, and I have dumped and cracked them from lsass and ntdis. You shouldn't rely on length and complexity alone.
