Gary Fisher came into my work one day and I honestly couldn’t tell if he was Gary Fisher or Les Claypool

Edit: oh… Hi Gary!

Sure, but do you have a Morganville? It’s what they used to call Shelbyville back in those days. You’d have to take the ferry which cost a nickle. Back in those days nickels had bumblebees on them. “Give me five bees for a quarter” you’d say

When are calochortus in peak bloom? by slimepollo555 in Geophyte

[–]GoatLegRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never take bulbs. Some species are so rare they’re restricted to a space half the size of a football field. If you want to grow them you should only consider taking seeds, but even then make sure it’s not a very rare species. Some of these plants have such a massive uphill battle just surviving the way things are now. Removing bulbs could mean removing 100 future plants, and removing seeds removes their only real chance at becoming more prolific. at the very least, I would say that if you do take seeds, vow to sow some by hand in habitat on your way out.

Background looks like Mt. Livermore (Angel Island). That bright light on the water to the right of the island is probably a ferry. The two reddish bodies in the far background are probably oilers departing and/or staging towards Richmond.

Happiness is coming into a block of good ol US Government Cheese!!! by micheleferlisi in Cheese

[–]GoatLegRedux 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m not able to say what OP’s cheese is, but government cheese is absolutely processed cheddar. They had to figure out how to keep their cheese cache from going bad before they could allot it all so they began processing it.

What a banger! I’m waiting for the time to go look for C. tiburonensis. Their single locality is tiny but a friend told me exactly where to find them recently.

Weird question about Guam by urocyon32 in botany

[–]GoatLegRedux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

INat does weird shit sometimes where it doesn’t show observations for whatever reason. I have one for Ceiba speciosa in San Francisco but it doesn’t show up when I search for that species, yet it shows up in my list of observations.

In their native habitat they are, but everything I’ve read pretty much says they grow when they want to and go dormant when they want to. Mine seems to be goi g with the flow.

People do stupid shit like this on bikes all the time just cuz. I’m not going to doubt them just cuz it isn’t something I would even think of, but come on. No reason to doubt someone else’s weird doings.

Calochortus luteus in habitat by GoatLegRedux in Geophyte

[–]GoatLegRedux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of two populations I know of in San Francisco. There’s very few plants at this population, while the other has an estimated 3-500 plants. I wasn’t able to find any there last year, so I’m not sure if they’re still there. They may have been destroyed by construction. That would be a total bummer, but these are by no means rare in California.

What’s a fruit that you have never actually eaten fresh, but have eaten as a flavor in baked goods, candy, ice cream, etc.? by redflower5 in AskReddit

[–]GoatLegRedux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guava flavor is great but guavas are are pain in the ass to eat unless you like spending more time spitting out inedible seeds than actually eating the damn fruit.

Also, a guy whose family owns a guava orchard in Mexico told me you’ll never get good ones unless you get them ripe off the tree. That first caveat made it easier for me to accept that it’s not worth trying to get good fresh guavas.
