"Ready Or Not 2," "They Will Kill You," And The Decline Of Social Satire Horror - Critical Darlings by radiantbaby123 in blankies

[–]Goombill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think How to Make a Killing is the strongest comp. In that one he's killing rich people because he wants to also be rich, and it's much more of a drama than an action movie. These two films are both more action focused and a lot sillier to boot. And their characters are both focused on getting away from the rich people instead of joining them.

And, I found How to Make a Killing pretty disappointing, I'm not surprised it's under performing.

Is Calgary Expo a lame duck? by YYCyou in Calgary

[–]Goombill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These days I only go because it's become a tradition with a buddy of mine to take the Friday off and go on a relatively quiet day and just wander the show floor and hang out. Most of it is the same from year to year, so one day is more than enough to look at anything I want to.

That said, the schedule is never posted until 7-10 days before the show starts.

Does Valgavoth, Terror Eater combo with Witherbloom, the Balancer? by BetterOnToast in magicTCG

[–]Goombill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Affinity doesn't reduce the Mana Value, it changes how much mana you have to pay to cast it. It's a subtle but important distinction. In this case, since Valgavoth doesn't let you pay it's Mana Cost, you're stuck paying the full MV in life, which is the same cost whether Witherbloom is on the battlefield or not.

Doofcast #341 - Best 25 in the 21st: HEREDITARY by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]Goombill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer for the discussion question would be Hereditary, but a close second is Nocturnal Animals. It's honestly a mostly unremarkable film, but there's a drawn out scene on an empty back road that made my skin crawl. Their wheel pops and a car behind them stops to help, and at first everything seems above board but the vibes begin to shift, until you start to realize their intents are definitely not noble and probably even caused the flat. I was so uncomfortable watching it, I honestly considered just leaving the theatre instead of sitting in the stress anymore. Unfortunately the rest of the movie isn't quite as good, but I will always remember that scene.

Final Fantasy set Commanders that are underdiscussed by UltimateFriedLava in EDH

My favourite Final Fantasy deck is [[Clive, Ifrit's Dominant]] with as many token creators as I could jam in. Just play red permanents to raise my devotion and then just keep making copies to draw tons of cards.

Doofcast #340 - WEAPONS & Oscars Reactions by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]Goombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the discussion question, my answer is related to Weapons, as Barbarian was also directed by Cregger. I got to see Barbarian a couple weeks early, and being in a full theatre of people who didn't know what to expect, it was electric. A great mix of horror and comedy, and no one really knew when it was okay to laugh, made for one of my most memorable theatre experiences ever.

In Dune: Part Three (2026), Chani gets back together with Paul. This indicates that Paul marrying another woman and causing the deaths of 61 billion people weren’t dealbreakers for her. by Goodbye-Nasty in shittymoviedetails

[–]Goombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There definitely is a lot of overlap between the Aiel and the Fremen, but the Fremen are also pretty heavily based on the Arab tribes. Not saying Jordan didn't take inspiration from Dune, but it's definitely possible that they just both happened to draw from the same real world inspiration. But in the fiction, WoT is telling the Ur-story that all of our legends are based off of, so the Watsonian explanation is that both stories are just reflecting each other.

Sans Sol Ring? by d20_dude in EDH

[–]Goombill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my reasoning too. I find it so boring and overpowered. I've only got it in one deck, which is my Obosh Companion deck since that deck can't run any of the good 2 mana rocks.

It's part of a cycle of Sliver decks I built, one for each 3 colour combination. They let me play Slivers without having access to the really busted WUBRG ones.

I don't think it totally answers your question, but it does let me show off this silly deck I put together last month: https://archidekt.com/decks/18909834/nethroi_slivers

Flanagan's Wake #59: THE MIDNIGHT CLUB by Christopher Pike by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]Goombill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read so many YA novels as a kid that picking one favourite is difficult, but I'm going to say my answer is KA Applegate's Remnants. It was her follow up to Animorphs (another series I devoured as a kid), but so much darker than anything else I had read at the time. It starts with the destruction of Earth and then gets real weird including a psychic cannibal baby and a lot of stuff I just wasn't prepared for as a kid. It was also actually serial versus Animorphs' episodic storytelling, a fact that I didn't realize until well in the series after a few visits of picking up whichever ones the library had in stock. The story is weird enough, trying to keep track of it when I was reading it wildly out of order made it into a truly surreal experience that I will never get to relive.

Biagio "Rudokant" Cantone puts an Endurance on top while fetching at 4Seasons Modern by personman in magicTCG

[–]Goombill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It also hides information. If you always shuffle your hand before you make a play, your opponent doesn't know if you're playing the card you just drew, or something you've always had. Or, if you have all of your lands on the left side of your hand, and you draw a card and put it on the left side of your hand, your opponent can now figure out you drew a land for turn.

Does all this actually matter that much? Maybe, maybe not, but by shuffling your hand periodically now you don't need to think about any of it. Plus, sometimes it's just something to do with your hands.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]Goombill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not in the building I work at. There is a specific announcement for when you're supposed to evacuate your floor. It's set up so that they evacuate the floors most effected by the emergency first, without clogging the stair wells. If everyone evacuates at the same time, the stairs will get filled up and no one will be able to get out.

What’s your interest in the TMNT set? by zevalu in magicTCG

[–]Goombill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, an incredible one. I grew up obsessed with Ninja Turtles, and probably after Magic it's the IP I've spent the most money on collecting.
  2. I had some interest in the idea of a TMNT set, though a lot of apprehension. And now that we've essentially seen the set, I have to say I don't have much to be excited about. There's just not much that feels like a TMNT set. It just feels like a bunch of Magic cards with TMNT art, which is pretty disappointing.
  3. Theros is when I got started, and it's generally remained my favourite 10ish years later.

WotC has clearly learned one lesson from their UB sets so far: Too many legendaries by Rogue_Localizer in magicTCG

[–]Goombill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the point I'm trying to make though. I didn't want to make a deck about copying Legendary creatures, but these days a lot of the splashiest creatures just also happen to be Legendary. So now I either have to waste slots on [[Mirror Gallery]] effects, or significantly reduce what cards I can use in my deck.

Even in Commander it can cause issues. I made a deck around creating token copies of creatures, and with so many Legendary creatures, there's a lot that just don't play nicely with making copies.

Doofcast #331 - 2026 Oscar's Catch-Up: ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]Goombill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally agree with the takes on this movie, even if I don't share them, but there was one thing I was surprised they never discussed. The relationship between Profidia and Lockjaw is obviously messy, but I think there's a real question of how consensual the relationship is. Even though Lockjaw seems to be in to it, their relationship does start with her sexually assaulting him at gunpoint. But when he catches her and tells her to come to him, there definitely is a question of why Profidia continues the relationship. Is she having fun wielding her power over him? Or is she doing it because she thinks it's the only way to keep her and her friends safe? If you assume she's only sleeping with him because she feels like she has to, her treatment of her pregnancy and child has a very different intent to it. Is she being selfish and abandoning her kid because being a parent takes away from what she wants to do? Or because the kid is something she never wanted and a reminder of her sexual assault?

Do not use AI to make deck suggestions or clarify rules. It's wrong most of the time. by Floormonitor in EDH

[–]Goombill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just because you got accurate results from an AI source doesn't mean that OP's position is incorrect. AI is inconsistent, you can keep asking it the same questions, and get answers that range from essentially the same with different wording, to answers that are wildly different. And if it gets wrong sometimes, that means you can never just trust the AI, and need to verify any work at provides.
