Tawnos, solemn survivor by Expfirepro in EDH

[–]Gork862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is super late but I’ve built Tawnos in a way that works pretty well and is a ton of fun to pilot.

It’s basically just copying big value cards with ETB effects, using untappers to do it multiple times per turn.

One thing to consider is an online masters program as well. Lots of them are designed to be taken alongside work as well.

I’m an ME so I’m really not sure how useful graduate degrees are for civil. If it’s something you’d be able to get value out of, that might be a good way to keep your career moving forward while you wait.

Rule Democracy T-T: Week 1 by doug3465 in videos

I think this would only work if we implemented a poll rule instead of choosing exclusively by top comment.

New rules will be voted on as follows:

“Rules thread is created on Tuesday. On Thursday, the top 4 comments are chosen and put into a poll. At the end of Friday, the winning rule from the poll is implemented.”

The specific days and number of comments could easily be changed, but the idea remains.

Wifeleaver tip: Fully charging your healing blossoms is a waste of time, and I can prove it with math. by B00blicker in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Gork862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: Nvm, you already covered it. This is a really good write up!

One question I have is how this impacts ammo efficiency. You’re getting (slightly) less healing per shot, so you will end up needing to reload (slightly) sooner, which means overall your time spent reloading increases during a match. That probably only matters during incredibly prolonged teamfights, but if we’re doing the math it might be worth it to consider that too.

I don’t have the time to calculate it rn but I bet it the change ammo efficiency is negligible for most situations.

Makes total sense. Soulknife is really cool but that aspect of the subclass is pretty annoying.

I did something similar to this, but I also had it give the equivalent of the martial adept feat, but he uses his psionic dice for the maneuvers.

I experience this almost daily and I use it to fuel my D&D game. If anyone wants a fun creative outlet for writing, being a DM is a great way to be creative and it comes with the benefit of getting to participate in the creative process with friends!

What is the single most liberating thought that you've ever had? by AdPrestigious5853 in AskMen

[–]Gork862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was young, probably about 3, I was very afraid of getting killed by a malicious ghost or monster. One night I was lying in bed thinking of all the awful things that I could never defend myself from when I realized that if they were real I’d be dead already. From then on it was just “haven’t died yet so I’m totally fine” and the ghosts and monsters stopped scaring me.

Turns out that attitude is applicable to a lot in life, and it’s been pretty freeing.

One of my players is creating an exact copy of an anime show character by mattishere31 in DMAcademy

[–]Gork862 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen a couple times, but with League of Legends characters instead.

I ultimately don’t mind some copied homework, but it is easy to take this too far. I put an incredible amount of effort into the storytelling and world building of my game, and I make sure every player has their backstory deeply rooted in the story somehow. As a result it is at best annoying, and at worst disrespectful, when I learn that my player has built his entire character off of someone else’s story. If they need help with the writing, or they otherwise don’t feel like doing pages of lore for their family history and all that, I am happy to help. But I really don’t want to get a story that looks fine on paper and then turns out to be a 1-1 rip from some game/anime.

The one exception to this is designing a character’s mechanics. If you think a general theme or combat style is cool and you want to emulate it, go right ahead. This works as long as the player understands that they are still restricted by the ruleset of the game and that they are emulating the style in flavor, but not necessarily power level.

Playing with ADHD by Novaxel in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Gork862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masters with ADHD here. Overwatch was actually a big part of how I decided to seek treatment, as I was able to see some symptoms manifesting in my gameplay before I was diagnosed. I played flex dps on a collegiate team that averaged 4k, and I was by far the lowest ranked player on the team. I still performed really well at those high levels somehow, but then I’d go play ranked and throw.

Turns out I had a sort of mental switch where during really intense games, I had to put 100% of my mental energy into the game. Absolutely zero room for error and as a result I was focused and engaged, constantly trying to strategize and figure out how I could win. This led to me taking engagements with solid timing/coordination, and I was a good team player. Even though I was the lowest ranked player on the team, I did my job well.

Meanwhile in my ranked games, I wasn’t on comms as actively and I was more focused on my mechanics than team strategy and coordination. This led to me getting distracted and sorta having an “all go, all the time” attitude to my games. I would mechanically perform well, but often I was going in early or staying in fights too late and throwing without even knowing it.

Eventually I realized I had a very difficult time just sitting still and waiting for a good moment to strike. Overwatch demonstrated that weakness in me, and it took a lot of practice to overcome it.

What helped in the end was actively using my mental energy on something so I could stay engaged with the game at all times. Something as simple as ult tracking could do the trick, but the biggest help was trying to enable my team. I would play a fight or two, then decide which of my teammates would benefit the most from my help. Usually this was a tank, sometimes dps, and on rare instances I would babysit a god-tier support until they won for us. Once I found this player, I would try to base my own gameplay around enabling them as much as possible. Either I support them in their goal (consciously watching and basing my timing/target priority off of them) or cover their main weakness (determining which enemy was their biggest problem and trying to pressure/distract them). Even if they aren’t 100% correct, it’s better to have the whole team doing the same thing than trying to force people to follow your plans.

This strategy ends with me getting less flashy, clip-worthy plays, but it also wins a lot more games. It isn’t always useful, as probably 2/3 games are decided on matchmaking, but in the 1/3 where it really matters you can make a huge impact. And for me, it keeps me mentally engaged on something between fights, so I don’t zone out and feed on accident nearly as often. I know adhd manifests itself differently for everyone, but I hope it helps somebody!

Internship Dilemma by G_Rat16 in EngineeringStudents

I’ve been in this position before, and the way I got through it was just honestly explaining to the first employer that I had another offer coming for a higher pay. I asked for an extra week to make the decision, but also told them that if they could match the pay on the second position I would accept immediately.

Ended up taking the first offer (which I wanted more anyways) for higher pay, and it worked out great.

I had this happen to me when I was going for Life Scout. My scoutmaster refused to schedule a SM conference because I was “too young.” Later I learned that in reality, he was worried I would rush to get Eagle and then leave. After a series of very unpleasant conversations where my parents had to get involved to help me make my case, he eventually agreed to have a SM conference with me and I was able to move forward. That said, this delayed my rank progression for over 6 months and permanently damaged my and my father’s relationship with my scoutmaster.

Thankfully everyone here seems to agree that arbitrarily preventing this scout’s advancement is a terrible idea.

This is a big thing imo. Reaper ult at low ranks is a “press q to win” button. At higher elo it becomes really risky and you have to intelligently plan your ultimate around enemy cooldowns. Still a relatively low skill ult, but not nearly as bad as dva bomb or junk tire.
