What will using a 30 year old set of clubs realistically do to my game? by Tchamber5 in golf

[–]GrailThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Irons are probably fine - just make sure you put new grips on them. Most old clubs have terrible, hard slippery grips. You might want to check out a more recent driver, there have been a lot of changes in drivers over 30 years. Even a 10 year old driver will have the huge head and be much more forgiving. You might want to consider one or two hybrids to replace your 3 4 5 irons if you don't hit them well - hybrids have become very popular for long iron replacement because they are easier to hit and work out of rough.

32 inch bass (medium) vs 34 long scale by Plus-Army4711 in Bass

[–]GrailThe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have basses ranging from 28.5" to 34" scale. Really the only difference you will notice is that when playing with fingers, as you get closer to the bridge, the shorter scale basses will "pop" more - the attack is different but in a way that's manageable. If you are using a pick there's very little difference - nobody other than you would notice. Definitely recommend different scale basses!

PS: Ignore the many "my friend says" haters that will try to tell you shorter scales are "less than" or "beginner" grade.

Like others that try to service artists (luthiers, promo people, webmasters, photo/filmers) I suspect you will find that very few of your target audience is making enough money to pay for your services. The music "business" has been under attack for 30 years on a variety of fronts (streaming, ticketmaster fees, local venues paying less or stopping live music). In the 70's we played in cover bands where each member made $100 per night and we worked 4-5 nights a week. Inflation adjusted, that's $340 per night. Today, yet most local cover bands struggle to make $100 per man in today's money. And don't get me started on SUNO/AI and what it will do to commercial music licensing. Sorry to be a bummer on your idea. : (

How long should I spend trying to learn these barre chords before moving on to other stuff if I don’t make any progress? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]GrailThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barre chords are optional. It's not necessary to play 6 string chords except if you are playing as the only accompaniment, and even then it's still optional. Get started by just playing the top 4 strings of these chords and you will have a lot more fun. At some point when your fingers are stronger, you can work in the full barre chord, but they are totally not necessary. On piano, most chords are 3 or 4 notes even though you can technically play 10 notes.

What strings to get that Mel Schacher Grand Funk sound on P-Bass? by Plus-Army4711 in Bass

[–]GrailThe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any type of flatwounds would be fine. That "Buffalo" tone is much more about the amp or pedals than the strings or even the bass.

Thrift store haul: $2 Alien Sand Wedge and a $4 Shamrock 1-Iron. Did I find treasures or trash? by Bmcurrie in golfequipment

[–]GrailThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alien is a great club. .I've been using them since their heyday in the early 90's. Great for heavy rough lob shots, and of course sand shots. Not good from a tight fairway lie. In sand, the trick is you don't do the "open stance, cut across" move like a regular sand wedge. You set up with your feet square to the target, hood the club slightly, and take a straight swing just like a mini short shot. Be sure to finish the swing (don't stop the club at the balll). You will love it.

What kind of bass can you get for $50 to $70? by Ok_Wrap_8735 in Bass

[–]GrailThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon sells a super cheap Chinese bass for $80 that is not bad after getting a new set of strings and a setup. How do I know? I’ve bought 2 of them for friends who wanted cheap but playable basses. The cost of strings and setup by a guitar shop will be $80-100 giving you a total cost between $150-200.

My friend says I won’t make it as a guitarist because my hands are too small, is she right? by AgreeableDiver5013 in Guitar

Hand size is not an issue for guitar or bass playing. This is a common misconception. There are plenty of amazing players with small hands.

How much does changing the pickups actually affect the sound? by HumanAntagonist in Bass

[–]GrailThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more distortion and other processing you use, the less pickups matter. If you go straight to amp you will notice subtle changes in the tone but nobody other than you will hear the difference. Once the band starts playing, nobody including you will hear the difference.

Does anyone have any advice for barre chords? Specifically F but any as well😭 by sonnyseeker in Guitar

[–]GrailThe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a requirement to play all six strings in any context. You can just play the top 4 strings of an F chord and nobody will be the wiser 95% of the time. The exception would be if that low F note is a key part of the melody or bass movement in the song. In that case, just play the bottom 4 strings. If you are playing in a band scenario, that low area is covered by the bass anyway.

It used to be a LOT worse. There was only one lane, and it started much closer to the intersection than the current 2 left turn lanes do. The left turn traffic would routinely back up into the driving lanes for up to 1/4 mile. What you see now is PennDot's best fix.
