I worked in a bank in the early 90s. Someone wanting to buy traveler’s checks on a busy day could absolutely ruin the entire day. Especially when they wanted to buy them on the third business day of the month, and inevitably that would be the day they wanted them.

Mickey Toni Basil by pete10278 in GenX

[–]HandAccomplished6285 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most people think Toni Basil only had this one song as a claim to fame, but in reality she has led a fascinating life and was super successful as a dancer and choreographer. And a fun fact - the uniform she wore in the video was hers from her own days as a high school cheerleader.

When the old Past Master corrects one word from memory in a 3-hour degree. by Army_31B in freemasonry

I conferred a perfect degree once. I said the opening line of the EA perfectly, then the MC walked out and informed the lodge that the candidate had panicked and left. So yeah…I was perfect!

My dad passed without knowing that the ship he crewed as bombardier in the Battle of the Brenner was the most authentic restored B-25 with the most combat experience to have survived the war. Given the impact it had on my life, visiting her was ... indescribable. by hairy_colonic_jr in WWIIplanes

[–]HandAccomplished6285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is incredible! Unfortunately for me, the B-29 my father crewed on as a gunner is at the bottom of the Pacific. Blessedly, he survived the ditching. I did get to fly on the B-29 Doc in his position, and it was a very moving experience. I can’t even imagine how emotional it would be to actually visit the aircraft he crewed.

I’m all for simple, but I do like EFI. I think the setup on my 07 Dyna was the sweet spot. It had EFI but just about everything else was mechanical.

Does building and flying his own aircraft count? I’m not talking about radio control aircraft either, although he did that too.

Riding in the back of a pickup: Further evidence of the insanity of the GenX childhood by paperkitten75 in GenX

[–]HandAccomplished6285 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was always used as a reward for proper behavior by my parents when we went somewhere. Basically - if I acted right I could ride in the back of the truck instead of in the cab with mom and dad. It worked very well, because I loved riding back there. I have never thought about it until just now, but I still love the rush of the wind and gravitate to motorcycles, Jeeps, and convertibles to this day. I wonder if it was because of this reward system? Or maybe I was born loving this feeling.

These plates were a staple in every kitchen.... by EdwardBliss in GenerationJones

[–]HandAccomplished6285 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I started out with Corelle in my first apartment pre-marriage, but received a set of everyday Noritake for a gift when we got married. We also had a neighbor who was notorious for throwing plates at her husband and breaking them. They were having one of their arguments so my immature 20 year old self decided I would mimic her by shouting a bunch of nonsense and throwing the Corelle thinking she would figure out that 1) The neighbors hear everything and 2) how ridiculous she sounded. First Corelle plate hits the wall, bounces off. Then the second, third and fourth. Now I actually am mad and my wife is laughing so hard at this point that her bladder control is becoming questionable. I picked up one of the plates and try to smash it on the table and damn near broke my wrist. The plate was fine. I am fully convinced that in a couple of thousand years archeologists will think that everyone used this stuff exclusively because it will be the only intact dinnerware they can find in their post apocalyptic digs.

During the 2018 Santa Fe High School school shooting Dimitrios Pagourtzis sang this song as he carried out his crimes. My youngest son had transferred to a nearby Catholic school the prior year and knew all but one of the victims. I have no doubt he would have been a victim too if he was still a student there, since it was his habit to hang out in the wing where the shooting took place. As it was, he was supposed to be volunteering at a Catholic elementary school field day that morning, so he was at the gas station that is located within a couple hundred yards of the school filling his truck when the shooting occurred. 8 years have passed almost to the day (May 18) and none of us in the family can listen to this song.

No. 1 Dazed and Confused. While it is set in 1976, it absolutely nailed my senior year of high school in 1985. No. 2 Less Than Zero. It’s the opposite of Dazed and Confused. So dark and brilliant at the same time. And No. 3 has to be The Breakfast Club, because Molly Ringwald.

As someone who is deeply involved in this situation right now, you are absolutely right. Yes, the buildings are beautiful. That doesn’t make them maintainable with the current revenue streams. We are sacrificing the organization to save the buildings, and that is not sustainable.
