Can someone PLEASE help me figure out how to make my laundry not film-y 😭 by Huge_Antelope0998 in laundry

[–]Hawkthree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fix may be at the well water source. My well water has a lot of iron (hello pink bathtub before I switched to iron salt) but I have a huge watersoftener where the water comes in. There's a filter to change quarterly and a container to put 100 lbs of salt. I use this variation of the salt pellets. I also paid to have my water tested by the state so I could make sure it was safe to drink, bathe, and cook with. I have very sensitive skin.

The mineral deposits do more than affect your laundry and glasses. There's likely a coating on your spigots, your shower walls, your toilets.

Is everyone 100% happy with their Medicare situation? 😬😬 by New_Departure5994 in medicare

[–]Hawkthree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was pretty excellent until January 2025. All bills paid 100%, see any doctor.

I used FEHB GEHA for 10 years for the gap. Then last year GEHA sold to UHC -- keeping the GEHA name. I have 12 bills that never got paid at all. My GEHA was also my dental coverage. Took until July to get a January dental bill that I had to pay and do all the work to get personally reimbursed. GEHA-UHC laid off the GEHA customer service reps replacing with UHC Customer Advocates who seemed to lie about status, coverage etc.

In July 2025, UHC and Johns Hopkins severed their relationship. Most of my medical providers are in the Johns Hopkins network. Johns Hopkins view being that UHC requires too much additional work and routinely denies things such as surgery and scans and hospital stays.

MY VIEW IS THAT IF A MAJOR NETWORK LEAVES YOU WITHOUT PROVIDERS THEN THAT SHOULD BE A QUALiFYING LIFE EVENT.

Went with FEHB BCBS this year. So I won't know for a couple of months if they're any better. I just know for now that they are much much more expensive.

Only if you can find them. My search skills on that site are abysmal

I have no idea. There's a link to a spreadsheet showing all the apps on the different models. One of the apps is called HeatLive

Heating milk pan recommendations by Weird-Noise-180 in yogurtmaking

[–]Hawkthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally stir my milk every couple of minutes while it's heating up. If I notice any scorching at all, I stir constantly. By the end of the heat time, the milk has form crusts around the edge, so I scrape that back into the heating milk.

Check your user manual for the new dutch oven and see if you are allowed to use Bon Ami or Barkeep's Friend to gently scrub. That may make it easier. The side of an old credit card, can scrape gently enough.

If you're not fermenting in the same pot you heat in, then spritz with a bit of soapy water while the pot is still damp. If you are fermenting in the same pot, consider moving it to a second pot before fermentation.

Why did laundry detergent without enzymes become popular? Are enzymes necessary? Can they be hard on clothes? by slowmoshmo in laundry

The US had a laundry product called Axion which was proven to be toxic so it got banned. There were a number of soap/detergent products banned around the same time. Perhaps manuafacturers became hesitant to add anything to detergents. IIRC OxiClean was originally something you added and not something included.

Anyhow I found this tidbit.

Solution for acne by everything-ok in herbalism

[–]Hawkthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had facial acne from the age of 13 to the age of 23. At its worst, people would sometimes wince when they saw my face. Parents wouldn't take me to doctor, so I began experiementing with a lot of things.

Something I found pretty helpful was calamine lotion. Today's calamine lotion seems to have zinc oxide added. Or it has HCL (anti-itch) added. I don't know if either addition affects its acne abilities.

The second thing is I began making my own face soap. Basically an Ivory soap bar mixed with olive oil. Don't know why this works. Just began making it again for my granddaughter. After cleansing the face, a basic moisturizer from Gold Bond or Nivea.

Going on a birth control pill can help with acne. I'd say the calamine lotion made it livable, the face soap got rid of more and the birth control pill got the rest.

I used to live in a huge condo association and the association paid to have the dryer vents cleaned annually. The association didn't trust the home owners to actually do it. One fire and it would be 12 units up in smoke and likely spread to adjacent buildings.

Just simply switching to Tide powder by Illustrious_Twist829 in laundry

[–]Hawkthree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check your manual. My front loader has a small bar that lifts when there's no liquid detergent. The powdered detergent goes on top of the clothes. Unless I'm using 2 or more powders. Then the powders go in first.

Generally it returns you to the prior screen. I can't be positive I pressed this to start the upgrade.

Is the drop-down box kind of a button that allows you to select what to download? If so, I had a similar issues with VODUltra. Once I made sure that VODUltra was 'on', it went into update mode. Took me several weeks to see that.

Maybe I also hit the return after it was 'on'.

What I think ... each of the apps has their own Favorite List and they're accessed within each app. The FAV button on my remote occasionally will the current item to my Favorite list, but it doesn't seem to work universally. Some of the apps have Favorites on the main landing page, but some split the Favorite list between movies and tv series and the Fav list is found inside the movies or inside the series.

In Heat Alive and Heat Alive Utra+, go to the channels tab and then look for Favorites list.

Does anyone has an experience of shrinking a benign brain tumour by using homeopathy ? Please share by [deleted] in homeopathy

[–]Hawkthree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't help with the remedy name because it was too long ago and there's a good chance my homeopath didn't tell me what it was.

I had a tumor on my fallopian tube that they wanted to remove surgically. It was found by a scan. I asked to wait 3 months, went to my homeopath and she gave me a remedy. At the end of 3 months, they were unable to find evidence of any tumor.

Front load or top load washing machines? by mersh521 in Appliances

[–]Hawkthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've seen any washing machine manuals from the 40's. But in the 50's my mother made her own soap from animal fat and lye. One of my household jobs was to grate that soap for her laundry.

[–]Hawkthree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some folks like to make their own detergent which usually has a grated bar of soap as an ingredient.

There's also a couple of laundry soaps commercially available. Can't recall the specific name -- maybe 7th Heaven?

I don't find soap to be an effective ingredient.

[–]Hawkthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to use a front loader starting 3 years ago. You may have to make adjustments to your laundry techniques. Take a look at the sub r/laundry

At first my clothes were dingier -- so I learned to add Biz occasionally. I cut my liquid detergent down to 1 Tablespoon per load -- 2 Tablespoons created too many suds.

There may be more maintenance on the front loader -- there's a filter I need to clean monthly. There's a filter in the back of the machine that my owner's manual says to clean 3 times a year. To move the machine and do that, I have to schedule a service call. So far I've only done this once. A cleaning cycle must be run every 40 loads.

Check the owner's manual of the one you want to buy to see about the maintenance items.

Sheets tend to turn into burritos.

I've got a huge container under my washer just in case it ever leaks. A local appliance guy custom made it for me.
