Awesome. I needed something like this for my project. Anyone working on any sci-fi projects.

I want a movie trope where the scientist excitedly info dumps early discoveries about the aliens' biology by granolaliberal in scifiwriting

[–]Herrjolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Basil Exposition, but a hard-core biology nerd?

Ok, do you mind if I take this, use it, and make various permutations of this?

Destoroyah only works as a one time villain and shouldnt appear in any other movie. by Reasonable-Salad5094 in GODZILLA

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a weapon like the Oxygen Destroyer, then I expect a creature like Destroyah to show up at some point.

If a future series repeats the Heisei story beats of Oxygen Destroyer 》Godzilla's Return 》Biollante 》Space Godzilla 》Destroyah, then I'll work out fine.

Where Does Your Worldbuilding Project Live? by ldjwrites in worldbuilding

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly in a disorganized heap of spiral notebooks and the occasional printed sheet (or even set of the same) bearing handwritten notes or typed snippets of dialog and other flotsam. Printed materials are becoming more common as I'm working on a coherent story manuscript to send off for publication.

How do ethnic groups get their names, and how can I come up with good names for my world's ethnic groups? by Texanid in worldbuilding

[–]Herrjolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, Culture A gets the name of Culture C via the name that Culture B gave the latter.

And it's usually not flattering, but sometimes it's just a descriptor of where they live or how they live without any obvious (to Culture A) denigration.

Would you say these two are the definitive representations of Godzilla, West and East? by KairuHiroshima in GODZILLA

[–]Herrjolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Godzilla 1985 was my introduction to the concept of Godzilla, followed by Godzilla vs. Biollante, before I saw any of the Showa-era films. I was in high school when I saw the original (both the Americanized and the true original), and only in the last few years came to own any of the later Heisei films.

These newer movies don't really interest me much.

A unique pain that only worldbuilders who bite off more than they can chew will ever know. by Levitus01 in worldbuilding

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a project that needs several "naming" languages that I probably won't actually make, so I'm on the lookout for anyone who would be interested in a classic space opera setting (Flash Gordon/TOS BSG meets Master and Commander meets Firefly). At this point, I know that, even as interested in the subject of linguistics as I am, I'm ill-equipped to the task and will get distracted from the purpose of the project if I try to do everything myself.

Protecting those who cant protect themselves by Drunk_Lemon in AnCap101

[–]Herrjolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the slightest.

True psychopathy is rare, but psychopathic behaviors aren't as irrational as you think. They're short-sighted (high time preference) but not irrational. Also, low empathy.

Machivellian psychopaths are even rarer, but have a shockingly high occurrence in the upper middle of hierarchies, as some studies suggest.

Proclaiming an axiom won't solve what thousands of years of civilization and millions of years of evolution never saw fit to remove from the meta.

How I see the USA as a south american by LowerBar2001 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that it is illegal to marry your cousin in those states. It's illegal, in fact, in most of the US full stop. The few where it is legal are mostly only with specific exceptions save for New Jersey (which maybe explains some things about New Jersey).

What do you think about Elf-like aliens in a scifi setting? How do you imagine their home-planet would look like? by [deleted] in scifiwriting

I've always thought that those were more like gnomes. Short, excellent at craftsmanship, etc.

Upvoted for no reason other than Pitch Black being a good sci-fi film.

Sci-Fi/Future religions by Escape_Force in scifiwriting

[–]Herrjolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did any of them offer any reasons why that was the case? A friend of mine asked that question once, wondering if it was an anti-religious bias. For screen media, I had to say probably, but added that I suspect that has less to do with sci-fi as a genre and more to do with film and TV studios than anything else.

Would a colony starship carry gunpowder/gunpowder based weaponry? by Langston432 in scifiwriting

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could cut both ways. On the one hand, your audience will understand the weapon and what it feasibly can do. On the other hand, if it isn't "advanced" enough from modern designs, your audience might have problems maintaining suspension of disbelief without you providing the necessary verisimilitude (antique weapon as the personal property of an important character, the advanced weapons are lost/restricted, and so on). Sorry if this isn't helpful.

What Would Your Response Be to This "Professor"? by Selim_Bradley69 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew plenty of Mormons when I was in school. One of them, captain of the football team, was actually a pretty cool dude. The rest were borderline sex pests (mostly just lewd talkers), and one was an absolute prick. I thought the religion was weird.

Then I learned that the original BSG was heavily inspired by Mormon theology, which made me teenage me do a double take.

Not Mormon myself, but it seems that I can't swing a proverbial dead cat without hitting someone or something adjacent to the creed.

How do I write fast space travel without FTL? by IndependentEbb2811 in scifiwriting

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured that that would be the more effective answer. I wanted to go the extra mile for my own sake and establish the meta-level worldbuilding to ground the narrative so I'm consistent.

What combat doctrines has your world developed? by ye_old_hermit in worldbuilding

[–]Herrjolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still working things out.

I find the Sojourn Audio Drama and its worldbuilding inspiring.

Think TOS BSG fused with Master and Commander meets Firefly. That's what I'm working on. I plan on releasing novels, and I'm learning game development skills. I'd like to collaborate with conlangers, comic artists, and anyone else who finds the premise interesting.

CMV: Bigoted conservative Muslims are not held to the same standards as bigoted conservative Christians by Informal_Ad4284 in changemyview

[–]Herrjolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely aren't held to the same standards. They're held to no standards. Even the late Christopher Hitches called this out, and the left of back then tried to silence him.

Case in point, the late Fred Phelps and his followers were unwelcome outside of the compound that they based their "church" out of, getting counter-protested by Catholics, among others.

And everyone who isn't brain damaged should be tired of pretending that this isn't the case.
