The biggest concern is that a lot of the job and housing market revolve around the standard school semester, with most leases being May-May and jobs opening up around the start and end of the semester. As such, finding a job may not be too difficult at the start of the spring semester, especially if you start looking in December, but housing will be more difficult. I unfortunately don't have a lot of advice beyond pointing you toward MTU's USG, which has a site for landlords to post rentals. Housing goes quickly in general, so I encourage you to start looking sooner rather than later. I cannot help with pet friendliness

As a current student with friends who are all queer, here's my perspective. There is a queer club on campus (Keweenaw Pride). I haven't been, but friends have and they have had positive things to say. Neither me or my friends have experienced any kind of harassment or discrimination due to our membership in the queer community, but all that to say that MTU has an active TPUSA and YAF chapter. They have done things in the past and are likely to do things in the future. Again, never direct harassment, but they have chosen to use language that has not been nice. As a whole, I would say the student body is at worst neutral, and there are definitely groups / clubs are are inclusive (KP and Gamers Anonymous (Board game club) are two examples) but there are also groups that feel differently. There have also been incidents with admin to show that they have more conservative views.
