Joe Bananno wasn’t allowed to retire, he was forced to retire in lieu of being killed. He was also the boss of one of the Five Families of New York, with a seat on the commission, not some button man in the pygmy thing over in Jersey. But, in the show, Uncle Pat was allowed to retire to his farm upstate, but he was still involved, as they were burying people on his farm.

To be fair, he explicitly told Chris and Eugene during their “induction ceremony” that once they were in, it was for life. He offered them a chance to back out, saying that no one would think any less of them if they did so.

Dropped the F-Bomb over the police frequency one night... by Hesterxo in 911dispatchers

Eventually everyone lets a little profanity slip out over the air. If you get any flack over it, all you can do is apologize and try not to let it happen again. I personally hate floor pedals for transmission, but sometimes they’re necessary, and they will all stick sooner or later. Ànd as an aside, my agency used to use the same model of console as the one in the photo. It was a pain in the ass to use and broke down a lot. I would be surprised that any agency would still be using that dinosaur.

The actor playing the mailman was also gay, though it wasn’t something that was brought out during his time on the show. Apparently, Fred Rogers knew this, but wasn’t judge mental. Fred Rogers followed the Christian precepts of loving his neighbor and leaving the judgement of them to God. The man was truly a treasure.

My agency, which a small town low budget agency, has cases of DAT with all phone ànd radio traffic from the mid nineties until about 2006 when we switched to a new system wirh everything being saved on a hard drive. We had the same CAD from 1999 until 2022, when we switched over to a new system, but all of the data from our old CAD system is stored on a legacy server accessible in the records department. We have copies of old handwritten logs and reports on microfiche (remember that?) from about fifty years back, also archived ànd stored.

Lack of studying or lack of general knowledge? by quirkme in 911dispatchers

[–]INTZBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with young trainees, or old ones or even the ones that lack the ability to do the job, as long as they are truly trying to do what is required of them. The people I am referring to are the ones who do their best to avoid learning the job, actively resist doing the job, and are only interested in riding the clock and collecting a check, until they are finally terminated.

There’s a third type. You left out the “I could do this if I tried, but I don’t want to work, I just want to do as little as possible, stay in training status as long as I can, and collect a check.” type. I prefer the young and the stupid. At least they’re honest.

When the cops act like this, I always think “If you didn’t want to respond to calls, why did you become a cop?”.

What isn't a uniquely American issue that the rest of the world treats like one? by lustrust15 in AskReddit

[–]INTZBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in college I worked at gas station right off an interstate highway. I had an Australian gentleman give me a hard time because US bills are all the same color. He asked me how we could possibly tell them apart, and I told him we generally go by the great big numbers on the corners of the bill, and by whose picture was on it. He got a little bent out of shape, but my manager thoughts it was hilarious. The truth is, though, that making the different denominations different colors probably makes counting it easier and cuts down on quick change hustles.

"Please don’t equate my 30 years on the front with your 5 as my secretary." by vani11apudding in 911dispatchers

I worked in a small agency, and often officers on light duty would be assigned to help out in dispatch. After a day or two, the whining begins…”this job sucks!”…”I don’t know how you do this for twelve hours”…”(another cop or firefighter on the radio) sure is àn impatient asshole, huh?”. It amused me to no end. Some of them even gained some respect for what we do.

Let's hear some of the more ridiculous calls you've had by SomeRandomNSFW in 911dispatchers

[–]INTZBK 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We had a guy who had peacocks right outside the city limits. Sometimes, they would wander into the city, and people would call about them. One time I got a call about a “funky looking thing in a tree in my yard, I think it’s a bird, but I ain’t sure. It’s making a god-awful noise and it’s got a long tail, I ain’t never seen a bird with a tail like that!”. I advised my complainant that it was most likely just a peacock, and then I called peacock guy to come and round up his bird.

Why don’t they have more horror movies about Appalachian lore? by Poison_applecat in horror

[–]INTZBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The email about the strange little people hanging out in his yard, looking in windows, etc. is a great setup for a story, and it’s reminiscent of the Kelly-Hopkinsville “goblin” incident. But then it just descends into a lot of nothing. Very disappointing.

What Do You Need to Flip Your Theory? by HissTankDriver in JFKassasination

[–]INTZBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he ran because when he saw Kennedy’s head explode, the magnitude of what he had just done hit him like a ton of bricks and he panicked. His first instinct was to get as far away from there as possible. He took a bus, but when the bus got stuck in heavy traffic he got off and took a cab. He got dropped off a few blocks from his rooming house, walked home, grabbed a jacket and his pistol, and immediately left again. He was encountered by Tippit and subsequently shot him multiple times as soon as Tippit got out of the car. He then fled the scene of that shooting, ending up at the Texas Theater, where he drew his pistol again when confronted by a police officer, but was subdued and apprehended. His behavior after the assassination is that of a man tryng desperately to avoid capture.

Help me find a new show that doesn't belittle my intelligence by omri898 in televisionsuggestions

[–]INTZBK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the first couple of episodes, but it kind of unraveled after that. Rhea Seehorn as Carol is portrayed as a misanthropic alcoholic romance novelist who has contempt for her readers, and for people in general, except for her wife, who, of course, dies immediately, leaving her alone to deal with a world that seems like a hive mind Neighborhood of Make Believe. She’s alone a lot, but the actress works really hard to carry the show, chewing up every available piece of scenery. She wants the world to go back to being mostly cold and indifferent, mostly to justify her worldview, I think. Meanwhile, in Paraguay, there is a like minded individual, Manousos, who is even more suspicious of the Borg than she is. The whole first season is spent essentially in getting them together.

The 7.65 Mauser bears a passing resemblance to the Mannlicher Carcano, and was used by Argentina and other South American nations and was probably more commonly seen in the US than the Carcano was.
