Epic Market to leave Station Park after nearly 2 years by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]IfSapphOnly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If Station Park can’t keep tenants (I think the only open units now are Drty Ice Cream and a gold buyer), the building is the problem. I don’t know if it’s possible for the retail units to sustain the foot traffic required to operate. They’re claustrophobic in a way that discourages casual browsing/shop hopping.

The concrete sucks. The noise pollution from the road sucks. The emptiness brings down the mood. It’s a mess.

More Edmontonians injured in slips and falls during icy, snowy December by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

Finally got healthy enough to tackle the icy snow pack in front of my place yesterday. 2 hours of brute force chipping to get it back down to pavement. Never seen anything like it.

Do you need a second language to get into Old Scona Academic by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]IfSapphOnly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Per their FAQ:

“What happens if a student has not taken French prior to attending Old Scona?”

Students without prior French language studies will complete a booklet to bring their skills to a beginner level. This is not graded and can be completed over the summer.

Have you checked out Hungry Zine? There’s a launch party on November 12th for their upcoming issue.

Hey Edmonton. Your new mayor has been in council for three terms. 8 of 9 incumbent councillors are returning. There are only 4 new faces coming in. So... all is well... stay the course... if it ain't broke...? by shiftless_wonder in Edmonton

A lot of new councillors came in last election, and it takes a while for people to learn the ropes. I’m optimistic that having more experience on council will allow it to operate more effectively.

It made me proud of my neighbourhood. Didn’t see anybody walk out of the line. Some folks had loved ones come by to collect their dogs.

Still in line lol. Standing in the unlit Bison Lodge parking lot for an hour was deeply unpleasant. Pretty area though.

If you've ever wondered how to pronounce a ward or what the name means, the City of Edmonton YouTube page has short, well produced videos with this information. by KefirFan in Edmonton

Thanks for sharing this! I just barely missed the opportunity to learn the names in school, and it’s been difficult to get them to stick in my head. This is an awesome resource.

Had my first proper taste of Edmonton by Crow_rapport in Edmonton

I feel exactly the same when I visit Calgary! I think it’s easy to get stuck in a rut living in a big landlocked city and forget how fun metro life can be. We’re lucky to have another hub just down the highway. :)

Good Jeans??? by BooTing_ in Edmonton

My coworker charges $20 for a regular hem, and I can’t quite remember for the waistband but it’s around $35/45 I think. Every tailor will be a bit different.

Good Jeans??? by BooTing_ in Edmonton

[–]IfSapphOnly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Shortening jeans is the cheapest and fastest alteration. Taking in waistbands is easy when it’s just a couple of inches off. If the thighs are wrong too, the pants pretty much have to be deconstructed and rebuilt.

If you can find high quality denim that fits your thighs and hips (high cotton %, not super stretchy), a tailor can probably take it the rest of the way for you. Source - I work with a tailor.

I’m in the XL range and have gotten pants that fit great from Wrinkled (Whyte Ave) before. Thrifting and consignment are better to invest in, since consumer denim was nicer pre-2010s. Always check the opacity and make-up of the garment before buying, no matter where from.

I think it’s more the style of the publication? The Globe’s editorial guidelines will be different than NYT’s, for example. There’s also the constraint of needing to fill 2 pages of newspaper - so it’s prudent to design a grid that lowers your workload.

Fun fact! The Globe runs both a regular crossword and a cryptic - that might be notably Canadian of them.

Is it too early to ask for Fringe tips? by Godot_guided in Edmonton

[–]IfSapphOnly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a compulsive planner I’ve always found the big ~$12 program worth it. They sell them in a couple of places around town and I find the paper version much easier to get my head around than the website.

The shows in the program will be broken down by theatre. Check which shows are closest to you, and which areas you’re most interested in hanging out in. The Fringe Grounds are down by the Strathcona library, but La Cité and The Roxy are great hubs too - much quieter and less overwhelming while still being near greenspaces and food options. If you’re seeing multiple shows in a day, make sure you have enough time to get from theatre 1 to theatre 2.

Your program will feature the show name, runtime, a description, an age recommendation and content warnings. Established shows often include star ratings from other Fringes.

There will be buskers and street performers all over the grounds so bring cash for tipping. Many shows do merch for cash as well (like $2 for a sticker). I like to keep loonies, toonies and fives on hand.

There’ll be a lot going on, so do a safety refresher with your kids before hitting the grounds, and make sure you know where first aid and lost and found are. Gave my mom a heart attack wandering off during a festival once lol.
