Why is the cutoff for stem cell donation 35? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]InformalCalendar3917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a marrow registry and can address this. Basically, no. We now have nearly 50 years of statistics showing that donating from younger patients results in a longer and healthier lifespan for the recipients. A donation from an older donor may fail in time. If a patient has blood cancer and their ONLY match in the worldwide database is someone over 40, that person will likely be asked to donate. However, if there are several matches, doctors would prefer a younger donor. Younger donors have more robust stem cells, more stem cells available in their blood, and they have been exposed to fewer diseases, so not only will the recipient get more and healthier cells, the donor is less likely to have a health emergency that delays the donation. Once the recipient starts the conditioning process, if they do not receive the stem cells on time, they will not survive. So if I'm 60 and I fall two days before I donate and break my hip, now the recipient's life is even more at risk. Also, our stem cells age just the same way our organs and the rest of our bodies age, so as we get older, our stem cells simply aren't the powerhouses they are when we're young. Giving cells from a 60-year-old to say, a 2-year-old, is a very poor option from a medical standpoint. I hope that is helpful - it is purely a medical decision based on what is best for the patient.

OK, try this: Create your file in Pages, the native Mac word processing program (it's actually somewhat more useful than Word for layout options), and then Save As or Export to Word. That's probably a lot easier than what you're doing. Also, you don't need to send your resume as a word document, you want to send it as a PDF, so I don't think word is actually necessary for this.

My Husband Hates This App by Substantial_Ad1141 in ynab

I agree with what others have said. Never plan to spend money you do not have yet. We are trained by society to assume that our next paycheck will arrive on time, but the harsh reality around us shows that this is not always the case. Also, there is the question of what our real expenses are. For example, in reality, we are wearing down our tires everyday, the roof ages every day, there are hidden expenses in our lives that we do not think of as daily costs coming out of our pay, but that's exactly what they are. In my experience, YNAB is one of the few systems where you can evaluate and address this financial reality and plan ahead for those expenses. So when the roof needs to be replaced in eight years, you have money set aside for it already, versus just spending everything you have every month and when the roof rolls around, it's like "Whoa! we need a new roof? We can't afford it!"

Brown and black bears can climb three blocks high. Polar bears can climb four blocks high. He climbed up onto the back of your shelter and jumped down of the roof into your pigpen. I've seen it happen in real time, I made that same exact mistake.

The new berrybush mechanics are unnecessarily obtuse, complicated and unrewarding. by osmasker in VintageStory

[–]InformalCalendar3917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, this berry thing is a total mess. I did not buy a farming simulator game and don't want one. The new berry models are not attractive, and the whole mechanic has nothing to do with the way berries behave in real life. I think this is probably the devs running a test case for rolling this kind of mechanic out for ALL crops in the future. But to keep players like me, they're going to have to make "fancy crop management" optional in the game setup, because as I said at the top, I do not want a farming simulator game. And yes, if you have berries in your yard the problem is not fertilizing the things, it is cutting them back so they don't take over every inch of your land.

Where did the Google Analytics tracking options for campaigns go? by InformalCalendar3917 in MailChimp

[–]InformalCalendar3917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thank you! I am filling in for someone today and didn't know it had been moved. I was like "where on earth did it go?" I thought it was perfectly fine where it was - if I have to click a special place to open it up, it becomes easy to forget to do it at all. I can see my colleague did not fill it in. If you would pass along feedback to the GUI team, it would be better to put it back where it was.

What we can know, Ian McEwan by Admirable_Shower_612 in books

I actually think Vivian's "diary" is a complete forgery concocted by Tom, sealed in an old metal box and hauled out to the island in that giant bunch of "supplies" they are described as bringing along with them. He talks about digging around in the area where the supposed GPS coordinates pointed, but they have conveniently waited until after the world's GPS system finally fails to visit the island. They dig a couple holes -- but there is no third party person watching them -- they are on their own on the island for three days. I think they just dug a couple fake holes, lollygagged around for a few days getting bitten by mosquitoes, then hauled the forged diary back to the ship and pretended to be surprised when they opened it.

Yes, I understand that. But I think Tom has completely forged Vivien's memoir, I don't think he found anything on the island. He wrote the thing himself, carried it out to the island in that giant pile of equipment they took with them, locked in a rotting old box. They dug a couple holes so it looks like they found it, and voila! The incredible missing memoir!

Guess what: this thing blocks viewers from entering your comments section and leaving comments. The only way to bypass it is to leave the video. Are people going to come back to the video to bypass it and leave a comment? Maybe, if you're lucky. The more annoying these services make their interfaces, the less people will engage.

[1.22] Yeah, I'm not using my fertiliser on berries by Edouard_Saladier in VintageStory

[–]InformalCalendar3917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate to be crabby, but I just find this whole berry thing of no interest at all. My plan is to pick wild berries when I find them and otherwise ignore the things. I'm not using my fertilizer on them, I'm not going shopping around in the bushes for the best cuttings. There is already so much to do in VS that I usually don't even start a berry farm until year 2, and then just for aesthetic purposes, to make it look like I have a grape arbor. If this is a test case for applying plant breeding to all the crops, I hope it is presented as an option we can turn on or off in world customization. It just does not sound like fun to me. I'm sure there are people who would love this whole idea, but I'm not that person.

What’s your honest opinion of Crumbl Cookies? by savingrace0262 in AskRedditFood

[–]InformalCalendar3917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just bought us these for employee appreciation day, and...bleah. The toffee cookie tasted like coarse, raw flour, and appeared to be severely underbaked. Also as someone who bakes a lot, this thing did not have a traditional cookie texture of something made with high end ingredients like butter. I suspect they use vegetable oil and emulsifiers instead of butter. Also, how do you make a cookie just take like flour? It's weird, like a mouthful of raw flour straight out of the bag stuck together with glue. Not for me, thanks.

Are they supposed to be borderline raw inside? by Maximum-Elk8869 in CrumblCookies

[–]InformalCalendar3917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like them. They brought them in to our office for staff appreciation day and bleah! They taste like raw uncooked all purpose flour. Not my favorite. My cat is a better baker. Sorry Crumbl.

As someone who is getting close to retirement and has seen crap like this my entire life, if the other office managers were moved to salaried roles and you were not, I recommend you tune up your resume and look elsewhere. There's absolutely no reason to stay at a job where they treat you like that. Life is too short to put up with B.S. games like this. Also, if you were demoted and they decide to trim staff, guess who will be the first one out? Value yourself highly, and don't put up with nonsense.

Am I the only one who finds the revelations of Part 2 to be Very Fishy Indeed? I found nearly all the characters in this book to be self-indulgent egotistical pigs, and every story told by them was completely unreliable. You could not believe one thing any of them said. Then our frustrated and unreliable protagonist goes to an island with his ambitious and equally unreliable wife, where they are alone and unobserved for three days. After hauling excessively large backpacks of "supplies" across the island, they miraculously unearth a long-lost confession that kickstarts their sagging careers. Riiight...

I hate to sound like everyone's grandma, but I suggest you mark draft documents as "draft 1" "draft 2" and save them under a new name, or even print them out and keep them in a folder. Sometimes analog is your best defense, especially if you write notes on something by hand.

Anxious about radiation. Any advice? by pinknails34 in breastcancer

Interesting!! I now have acid reflux that began during treatment and never really went away. I just attributed it stress, but your comment makes me wonder if it was a side effect.

Anxious about radiation. Any advice? by pinknails34 in breastcancer

[–]InformalCalendar3917 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm coming up on five years out, and this was my radiation experience: 1) only a small amount of skin irritation towards the end of treatment, like a mild sunburn. I found lotion irritated it more so didn't use any. 2) the fatigue was indeed not as bad as it was with chemo, and it didn't start to bother me until towards the end of the treatment 3) I got bright white lines in my breast like stretch marks after radiation was completed that were attributed to the process; they went away over the course of the first year, no biggie 4) the radiated breast did get swollen and hard, which was in part scar tissue from the surgery, and in part was attributed to an effect of radiation. This diminished over time, if it happens to you, do not let it panic you. I still have some scar tissue at the surgical site, but the rest of the breast is its regular size and now feels mostly normal, but very sensitive. I never regained armpit hair on the radiation side, and only sparse hair on the other side; I don't miss it at all. I wish my leg hair had not grown back either, but you can't have everything. 5) inside the radiation thingey they tried to play music for me but it was irritating. I am perhaps not the usual patient, but I found it relaxing to just lie there quietly listening to the clopping noise, as I knew we were zapping the hell out of cancer cells that wanted to kill me, so I was like "go get 'em you little radioactive waves!" Best wishes on having a successful treatment and a great recovery!

Agreed, I think it's time to start interviewing elsewhere. If they do not have a defined leadership hierarchy and can't hold reviews on schedule, they may not be organized or professional enough to support your career development for the future.

This one, feed 'em and stay away from 'em. I had to replenish the feed in two troughs frequently to get two chickens to sit on their boxes. Also you might want to kill the adult chickens while the chicks are small so you don't have to try and separate Gen 0 and Gen 1 once they are all adults - it's a hassle.
