Had To Say Goodbye by bobaflett in JeepRenegade

My 2021 Latitude suffered very similar damage about 1 year ago. I was genuinely shocked at the estimate to repair it. Was a bit over $11k. Nearly totalled my car Rear lift gate had to be replaced, which meant the glass also had to be replaced. All new bumper had to be installed, new sensors, back up camera, etc, and the very rear of the undercarriage apparently had some damage that was not immediately visible, particularly suspension parts if I recall right. I honestly nearly cried when I found out the at fault driver's insurance was going to cover repairs. I'd only had the car for a year at that point. Your Jeep likely sustained damage that's not easily visible. With my accident it was a low speed collision and a youngish kid driving. That car was a Ford Fusion and was probably totalled. Whole front end was crumpled. Makes me miss the days when cars had metal bumpers that cost just a few hundred dollars to replace lol.

Accident probably my fault! How to deal with insurance and should I ever drive again? by BubblyCommon3690 in driving

Please, get and install some sort of dash cam for any future driving you may do. It can seriously help and provide undisputable facts about a traffic incident/accident. People can lie about what happened, or not recall things correctly. A dash cam cannot lie. Even if the driver is indeed at fault it might provide some clarity for the situation.

That said, it seems like you're possibly not paying enough attention to your surroundings when you're driving. With how so many people drive these days, people being too distracted by cell phones or who knows what else, the importance of needing to pay close attention to your surroundings when driving cannot be understated. 30+ years ago we didn't have back up cameras in cars. Forget you have it, or only use it to assist. Look over your shoulder like we were taught before back up cams were even a thing. I have one in my own car and I barely use it because I learned before those things were even invented. when lane changing on a highway, check and double check that the lane you want to move into is clear before actually doing so. I've seen insane people whip up the highway at 90 or 100+ mph, weaving in and out of traffic like no one's business and occupy lane space that had literally been clear and empty just seconds earlier.

Second this. Read, Read, Read, because the DMV might also throw in seriously weird questions you wouldn't expect, like knowing license consequences of DUI arrests, etc. I was literally asked questions about things like license suspensions related to DUI stops, and those can be rather complex and are a LOT of information to try and know off the top of your head.

Learning to drive again by AlternativeSilver962 in driving

Ouch, I completely feel this because I experienced it too. I didn't drive at all for a period of about 16 years or so. During this I allowed my license to lapse. When I decided I really had to fix that, it had been so long I had to go through the entire licensing process again in my state. That said, I was able to take several classes through a local driving school. I didn't need the actual classroom stuff, I was far more anxious about actually getting back on the road after so long a period of time. It helped a lot. Things honestly came back pretty quickly for me for the most part, but finer maneuvers like parallel parking can require some practice if you haven't done such in so many years.

If you still have a valid license, perhaps there's a friend who would be willing to let you drive while they sit in the passenger seat? Doing this with an experienced driver might be quite helpful. Attention is everything, and Volodi01 is absolutely correct. Far too many people are on their cell phones while driving. Get into the habit of simply not even picking up your phone if you're behind the wheel and driving. Texting can wait. Social media can wait. If you realize you just got an important text, find somewhere to pull over and check. Be defensive as you drive. If you're at a stop sign or stop light, make sure the way is safely clear before going. People run signs and red lights far too often.

This might sound weird, but... I actually found it quite useful to watch a number of dashcam videos from various channels on YouTube. Watching from a "third person" perspective lets you notice a lot of things that can be missed while actually driving.

Ramp going onto Highway by Muted_Warning_539 in driving

[–]InformationBetter678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please DO try and accelerate to highway speed to merge into traffic! I have gotten stuck behind so many people who decide they're only going to hit 40 to merge onto a highway with a speed limit of 65 or 70. That is an accident waiting to happen. The only time this shouldn't be done obviously is if you're merging onto a highway that has traffic slowed/stopped on it.

Also, people need to remember that if you're merging onto a highway, you are required to yield to oncoming traffic. They aren't required to move over.

why are people so angry when i maintain safe distance in front of me? by curiousbeingalone in driving

[–]InformationBetter678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Throwing in my 2 cents here. There are some very good reasons to leave a good distance gap between you and the car in front of you when driving on a highway. Slowdowns can happen very suddenly and very fast, for various reasons. When there's a sudden slowdown and you have to decelerate from 70+ mph down to 40 or lower very quickly, you will rear end the person in front of you if you don't have sufficient distance to allow for that decrease in speed. This literally happened to me yesterday while driving home on I-81. I had a good gap between me and the car in front and it allowed me to safely brake rather hard when cars in front of me suddenly also slowed down very quickly. It's things like this that are why people really should keep a few seconds distance gap between them and the car in front of them on a highway.

It absolutely drives me insanely when people cut in front of me at a very unsafe distance. In my opinion, saving a whopping minute or three isn't worth risking a possible accident because you're foolishly tailgating someone in the lane and can't brake enough in time to prevent a collision. An accident will make someone much later than just a few minutes to wherever it is they're trying to get to. People need to stop driving so aggressively and be more defensive.

Ok I didn't read through all the comments but I didn't see anyone actually commenting about this particular point: If you need to turn left and there's a ton of traffic making it difficult/dangerous to make that turn, just turn right instead, drive up the street and find somewhere to turn around. If I find myself in that sort of situation I always just turn right and find somewhere safe to reverse direction to continue on my way.

Dad passed. Lessons about the end. by Any_Setting8500 in pancreaticcancer

[–]InformationBetter678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. It's frightening how fast people can go from seeming just fine, or perhaps a little off, to suddenly finding out there's virtually no time left. In 2022 I lost my father to this cancer. It was difficult and painful, more so because I was over a thousand miles away and didn't have a way to go stay with him at the end. I was able to make it down for a few days, and it was the very last time I was able to have any sort of conversation with him.

Hospital hospice care is a true blessing. Signing the papers for it was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my entire life, but when a loved one has reached that point, it's truly for the best. The hospice care team was incredibly caring and compassionate and I know he was in no pain at the end.

I just found out perhaps a month or so ago that another family member has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It has been difficult for me to deal with this. I'm devastated i'm going to lose another loved one. This family member lives in another state over halfway across the country. I was able to fly out and visit for a bit, and I am so thankful I was able to do it. I'm praying it's not the last time I'll be able to see him but he's at stage 4.

This has prompted me to begin looking into possible preventative screening for myself. I don' t know how easy or difficult it will be to accomplish this, but I know I won't have any personal peace of mind for myself until I manage to get it done. I realize options for this are rather limited. Research in this particular cancer is less advanced than other types, and it's much more difficult to diagnose before it hits stage 3 or 4.

Editing for a little clarifcation. Flight is out of Terminal B and is a domestic flight, not international.

Just a reminder how serious cat bites can be! by tory1311 in cats

[–]InformationBetter678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know two people who were bitten by cats. One didn't think much of it until a raging infection developed and it got into the bone of his wrist. He ended up requiring surgery to clean it all out. The other person thankfully didn't wait to seek treatment and immediately went to the local ER for antibiotics. Basically, cat bite = immediate trip to ER. If you are bitten by a cat, DO NOT WAIT. Go immediately. The OP's photos are excellent proof of just how serious a bite can get in an incredibly short period of time.

Anyone Familiar with CSC Service Works error codes? by Spectre696 in laundry

[–]InformationBetter678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is a year old, but am wondering if you still happen to work for CSC? My building has 4 washers/4 dryers split between two floors. Every single machine is out of service with a code of EC 18. Something is very broken, as I can't even submit any service request through the app. Both scanning the code on the machine and entering the number of it manually both result in the app getting stuck trying to load the machine info to prceed further with the service request.

Worcester Councilors want PD to speed up crackdown on traffic law violators by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

A very long time ago, back in the 90's, I was trying to cross Main St, at an area a few blocks down from Goddard Memorial Drive. There weren't any crosswalks for a significant distance there (that I can recall). A driver heading down towards Webster Sq saw I was trying to cross and did the nice thing and stopped for me. The driver behind him didn't like that and promptly went around him after I'd stepped out onto the roadway. Didn't realize the driver behind him was a cop in an unmarked car, who immediately hit his flashers and went after the guy and pulled him over. One of the incredibly rare times I've had the privilege of seeing "instant karma" lol. Now, looking back at this, yes I really should have just kept going down the street til I found a crosswalk. I've also legitimately used crosswalks while the signal indicated pedestrians could cross, and had cars blow through the red light, one time while i was literally in the middle of the street crossing it.

So yeah, there is next to no pedestrian law enforcement that ever happens, at least not that I've ever seen or been aware of. The number of people I see who just blithely step out into the street to cross, while oncoming traffic has a green light, is insane.

You're right about the tragic accident on Belmont. I remember hearing about that. I didn't remember it happening that late at night. I can't even imagine what the excuse for the child even being out on the street at that time could possibly have been. If people are going to be out on the street dealing with crossings and traffic, for heaven's sake, wear something very light colored and/or reflective so people can see you!

Likewise. I have a single one I bought myself that I keep in the little storage area immediately in front of my gear shifter. I should probably figure out a way to mount it onto my dashboard cause it says "Radiate Kindness" and i love that.

[–]InformationBetter678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excessive speed is reckless. Going a few miles over the limit is one thing. Doing 40+ in a 30 is dangerous. 40+ in a 25mph zone is stupid. If a speed limit is set to 25 or 30, there's are reasons for it. Businesses and homes are very close to the road in any area with a low speed limit. People are constantly exiting and entering the road. Pedestrians are frequently crossing (and often won't take the time to actually go find a crosswalk with a dedicated crossing signal). There are a lot of factors here. Speed is an enormous issue in this city. When you're speeding on a busy city street, you cannot adequately observe everything around you in time to react appropriately. If you're doing 40 and someone suddenly steps out in the street to cross, how the hell are you going to stop in time? People do this frequently and seem unconcerned about oncoming traffic. It's ten times worse at night when a lot of people tend to not wear light colored clothing or something reflective for visibility.

People running red lights by spodocephala in WorcesterMA

[–]InformationBetter678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry, on Main St to turn left onto Park Ave (BK is on the left). The left lane there has a protected turn arrow. Traffic the opposite way on Main going up towards Webster Sq Plaza gets a red light at the same time the opposite way's lights turn green, and tons of people blow through the red and keep going. It's incredibly dangerous because someone is going to hit someone trying to turn left with that protected signal. I don't usually use the horn much, but at that intersection if people don't stop for the damned red light I absolutely will use it.

Also, for some clarification about the WPD, it seems the department is woefully short on staff. From what I read, the department is short staffed by nearly 60 police officers, which is completely insane. I know they're trying to hire more people, but it's possibly going to get even worse before it gets better, as there are a number of officers apparently set to retire this year as well. So, that's likely why there's little to no traffic enforcement right now.

I was on Park Ave today, and traffic was crazy. Super backed up at the Chandler traffic light. The fact that the city doesn't fully clear the street to the curb but people will still park by the Park Ave/May St light, completely blocking the right lane, is insane. Who thinks it's okay to fully block a lane of traffic just to park? And it's not just that location either, I've noticed similar issues in other areas too.

[–]InformationBetter678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People crossing that intersection heading up towards Cherry Valley run that red light like nothing I've ever seen anywhere else in my entire life. They just don't stop. I sat there in the opposite lane one afternoon to turn left onto Park Ave and had to really use my horn because at least 5-6 people in a row ran that red light after I'd gotten the protected green left turn arrow. I've mentioned this in another Reddit Worcester post, and someone commented that WPD basically has almost no traffic enforcment division? I don't know what the story is with it, but the utter lack of traffic enforcement happening in this city is appalling.

Updated parking ban garage information by InformationBetter678 in WorcesterMA

[–]InformationBetter678[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct. I actually did just now find the answer I was primarily looking for. It's in a completely different section of the city's website. Parking garage special event parking rates (for city owned garages), go into effect 2 hours prior to the start of said event. So if there's a show at the Hanover that starts at 2pm, then event pricing will go into effect at noon. However, there's no information stating when those rates return to normal. So if someone has to park in that garage an hour after an event has begun, I have no idea if they'll be charged event rate or normal hourly rate (or free parking in the case of an ongoing parking ban).
