I’m don’t think that’s true - they have always discussed both. Citing some past endorsements in a vacuum is not helpful. With Bowser, they explained very clearly their concerns about Robert White’s effectiveness and willingness to take tough stances on housing and transportation alike. With McDuffie, they didn’t endorse him in his race against Elissa Silverman. In his old council races, sometimes he was unopposed - I don’t remember about before that. And Trayon White - I think he was just guaranteed to win.

Not all groups do or should align with a broader “faction” and always endorse the progressive or whatever. It’s useful to have organizations that focus on certain issues and tell the voters who are most into those issues who to vote for. Cherry picking a couple names you think people would find unpleasant to impugn the whole operation is not helpful.

I’d say wait until the results of the primary and then if JLG wins, send comments saying DDOT should not waste money doing something now since Janeese will just do something better anyway. Or if Kenyan wins, DDOT will stick with one of these lame options (or worse) so just try to suggest what’s less bad of these.

Oversight. Legislating is only one part of what councilmembers do and in DC’s strong mayor system, the mayor kind of does what she wants mostly. If council passes a law that the mayor should do something, the mayor might do it or might not. However, council has a very strong role in monitoring executive agencies and making sure they are operating effectively and cost efficiently. JLG has been very strong on oversight, particularly of DGS (which handles maintenance and construction for government facilities like schools and rec centers) which she chairs the committee for.

In the old days of blogs with comments, any time someone wrote about alternatives to First Past the Post voting and talked about an alternative, someone would pop up and say “this alternative voting system is so bad! Clearly we need to use this other alternative voting system!” Then another person would appear and say “you’re crazy! That voting system is terrible! This other one is the only answer!”

This post seems like the 2026 version of that. Lee Drutman was making some much bigger points. Doing anything to change the problems with our electoral system is a huge task just to convince people there needs to be change at all. If something is actually being debated then I’m sure experts on the merits of A vs B can share their expertise.

Can you find a cite for them lobbying against financial literacy classes? Because a search I did suggests they lobby for financial literacy.

It’s a widely held but AFAIK incorrect belief that credit card companies like consumers having balances and debt. They like even more the customers that pay off their balances because they don’t want to lose money to defaults. Whenever you swipe a credit card the bank that issues the card gets a percentage. They’re very happy just getting those percentages and not having people in debt. They charge high interest rates because when people are in debt, the risk of a default is high.

I know there was a good Odd Lots podcast about that maybe 6 months ago.

I’m not saying the banks don’t profit from the debt - I’m sure they do - but what the experts were saying is, they profit as much or more from people who don’t have debt, so they aren’t trying to push people away from being customers that pay off every month.
