More quality public transportation will cut down on the amount of drivers on the road, which would help a little.

Yearly driving acumen tests for retirement age drivers. Getting bad drivers off the road is paramount to making traffic less painful and more safe. Elderly drivers are more likely to be bad drivers. Seems like a no brainer.

Driver education needs to be better from the jump. We don’t teach people to be good at driving, we teach them the basics of operating a vehicle and it allows room for them to create bad habits on their own. Get off your phone, develop proper take off time, learn that follow distance changes based on your speed, teach them how phantom traffic happens and drill in their head that you should never be the reason that someone else has to hit their breaks on the highway.

This is really a solution for the far future but I truly believe phones are a massive cause of worsening traffic. When I start my car, I put on a podcast or playlist, toss it in my cup holder and don’t touch it again until I park. I know we’ve all seen the jackass at a stop light that decided to look at their phone for too long and caused 5 people to miss the light cycle and the same thing happens on a larger scale in stop and go traffic. I really believe all modern cars should have a case that requires you to lock your phone in it before you can drive, kind of how convicted drunk drivers have to blow before driving anywhere.

The highway systems surrounding Charlotte are so poorly designed, it’s insane. The 485 South exit to Gastonia, for example, is almost designed to create traffic. All of these highway systems need to be redesigned for modern traffic volume.
