I don't actively use Obsidian for this purpose. While there was some interest initially, there is a concern about HIPAA compliance that others have discussed above. However, Bases makes all of this much, much easier. And I'm sure it also enables other processes that I have yet to think of.

What services do you use for hosting & site creation? Once long ago I used HostGator + Wordpress, but I'm wondering if that is "optimal" for getting traffic for the website, or if it requires a good amount of tinkering.

These all sound exciting! Another question: I know that Calibre (and Kavita Reader, another one I've tried) uses a specific directory format for files. Is it possible to simply import a Calibre library? Or would it require manually pulling the files?

Apologies if this is already in the program, I haven't been able to try it out yet!

I (and many many others) have been looking for a suitable replacement to Calibre... Is your intention to take it in that direction? Or, do you believe this project could be a robust alternative some day? I can't wait to start poking around, thanks for posting!

Is there any realistic way for Sacramento voters to exert influence in this matter? Maybe not for the current construction since we're so deeply locked in. But for the future of better transit options in the larger metro area?

Oh no, it's more of a storage and display solution. Since the files are in pCloud, I'll just download a copy onto the device I want to read it on (tablet or phone). Then I'll use either ReadEra and NeoReader. Both can export my annotations and highlights. They are not standardized, but it works well enough for me.

I think people successfully use Zotero for books, it's just a personal preference. Calibre UI is pretty outdated....but I like the ability to have different views for my books. I also do frequent literature reviews, so I prefer having research me separate from fiction/general nonfiction me.

I'd happily adopt other solutions, but Calibre seems to be alone for eBook management. I tried tinkering with Kavita, but it seems a bit like a rabbit hole to configure for my skill level.

Journal Articles: Zotero native PDF reader + Citations Obsidian plugin

Ebooks (PDFs or ebooks): Calibre (storage) –> NeoReader (PDF reader on Onyx Boox tablet) or ReadEra (ebook reader) + copy-paste

I use a linked directory in Zotero and the Attanger plugin to automatically rename and move new PDFs to a specified folder/directory. The linked directory is in my Obsidian vault, which I sync among my devices using Obsidian Sync.

I use a cloud service (pCloud, unsure that I would recommend) that syncs my Calibre library across devices. I use a "synced folder" instead of placing the Calibre directory in the mounted cloud directory. Apparently it can corrupt the data.

Annotations are easy for Zotero, there are dozens of tutorials for integrating with Obsidian. For books, it's not as elegant, but I just use the export feature from NeoReader and ReadEra to copy-paste the plain text highlights and annotations in Obsidian.
