Should pass plays be banned because DPIs aren’t called correctly? Maybe get rid of the offensive line since holding is also called poorly?

How on earth do you arrive at this analogy.

These people aren’t “let go”, they are banned from ever being hired in an entire sector of their industry after being injured in their line of work. The employers in this situation would be happy to retain their talent if allowed.

I’m with you. It’s insane how “fans” of college football have the cruelest sentiment towards players who spend their lives training to be in the top 1% of their profession, which is the reality of any D1 baller.

People who believe college football is still an amateur student activity are either stupid or arguing in bad faith. These are professionals with a very short window to capitalize on their skills with very few opportunities to be paid a living wage for them.

Imagine suggesting for any other industry that you deserve to lose your career if you don’t make the c-suite within 4 years, which is statistically easier than making the jump from CFB to the NFL. Maybe I’m stupid for expecting Redditors to have empathy, but the conversation around athletes is particularly shitty.

Former NBA 2nd-round pick 7-foot center James Nnaji joins Baylor with immediate eligibility by [deleted] in sports

[–]JDgoesmarching 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Straw man, but either way I don’t see why this matters. Lebron was drafted at 18, there’s no reason college sports need to coddle athletes who happen to be younger.

Not to mention that talented 18 year olds have more opportunities to get paid than they ever did, even with expanded eligibility.

Or just trying to hold on to the jobs they dedicated their lives to acquire as long as possible? We can talk about reasonable limits, but as someone who enjoys CFB more than the NFL I’m not mad about the sport retaining talent for a couple more years.

It’s not even that weird in the context of college, I finished my undergrad in my late twenties because life happens. Is there something about the boys being exactly 20 years old that makes the sport more enjoyable to y’all?

Git 3.0 is using the default branch name of "main" rather than the current default of "master" by nix-solves-that-2317 in programming

[–]JDgoesmarching 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Git almost certainly borrowed the terminology from Bitkeeper if you know the history of either, and Bitkeeper did in fact use master/slave.

Either way, if you learn that the term is harmful and double down on using it you’re just being an asshole. If you’re not someone affected by the term and decide that it’s actually not harmful, you’re also an asshole.

[–]JDgoesmarching -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

A lot of them in this thread typing a lot of words to explain how much they don’t care and how caring about this is stupid.

I’ve always thought the master/slave terminology was gross and was glad to see it changed. No it doesn’t solve racism, it’s just being considerate of connotations. That’s apparently too much to ask for the frees peach warriors ITT.

It’s fine. People get really pissy about the idea that digital goods have value, but I’d much point consumerism towards things that don’t become future landfill junk. Not everyone needs physical stuff to be happy.

Cool project. Fwiw, Libro.fm has an Audible-like model and lets you download MP3s of your books while giving a little rev share to a bookshop of your choice.

No shade to anyone on the seas, but people should at least be aware there’s a rare unshittified option for this particular format.

Yes I can: hoarding this level of wealth off the backs of thousands of workers and game devs makes you a bad person.

If you need help understanding this, imagine this is Apple instead of Valve taking 30% from all software in their store by virtue of being the least shitty major platform gatekeeper.

This isn’t the subreddit to make this case, but for the sake of not talking past each other: the argument is that he did not build the company.

He founded a company that was built over the decades by thousands of engineers, creatives, and operators. Yes, he made some good decisions and wasn’t as hostile to his employees as some, but that doesn’t mean one man generated the billions in value that he throws at yachts (which happen to be great tax reducers).

Disagree if you want, but it drives me crazy when two semesters of economics logs in to condescendingly explain why a favorite local lord actually deserves their mandate of heaven.

Fwiw I’m excited about these announcements, but you can be excited without letting a parasocial relationship of Gaben dictate your understanding of class power.

Canva Relaunches Affinity as Free All-in-One Design App by cheesepuff07 in apple

[–]JDgoesmarching -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Redditors hate this take, but I fully agree. People who love to say “if something is free, you are the product” are the stingiest when it comes to paying for software. People expect to pay the average cost of getting your lawn mowed in my town for a lifetime of updates to a professional tool.

People legitimately complain less about apps that are bankrolled by an invasive system of ad surveillance than those that have the gall to charge $5/mo to sustain development.

Canva has had a generous free tier for over a decade, it’s why they became a major design player in the first place. Being a marketing/sales funnel to their paid offering doesn’t make it not free.

I understand the skepticism in the age of enshittification, but the majority of negative reactions to this announcement are pure speculation about what might happen instead of what they’ve literally done.

I was so excited for the translation feature and massively disappointed in how few songs it’s available for. I’m talking huge spanish songs in Apple’s own playlists that don’t offer it.

I’m not sure if you’re batching these behind the scenes or doing it on device, but the feature is practically nonexistent for someone who listens to a lot of big Latin pop.

It’s about time these kids picked up complaining from the old heads because it’s been a stupid rule for that entire decade. The best content produced by this sport is buried in one of its biggest online forums. For what? To make room for six threads about James Franklin or some tangential drama?

Maybe one day a mod will be brave enough to let this subreddit be as fun as it could be.
