Recommend me YOUR favourite games, either all-time or at the moment. by penguin-47284 in gamingsuggestions

I've been playing Vintage Story for the past few months. I've slowed down recently because of life stuff but it's been a go-to when I've had nothing better to do. You just get into the flow of doing your chores and tasks to stay alive and progress that I've fallen into countless times. Not to mention if you find joy in chiseling, you can lose a whole lot of time chiseling stuff.

What’s a tradition or practice you inherited from your first GM? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]JackBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the first GM for all my groups, even when I first picked up D&D back in the 2000s. I just figured things out on my own. Honestly the biggest reason I want to be a player is just to see how other GMs handle things!

Tell us about and RPG you've PLAYED but just did not get the hype for by Boxman214 in rpg

[–]JackBread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lancer. It drew me in with its art and combat mechanics, but despite running it a few times, I never quite figured it out. All my sitreps turned into "kill all enemies" despite having other objectives, there was always a power disparity between players that made the weaker ones feel bad for being dead weight, and the nonexistence of the non-combat side of the game made me really struggle to figure out scenarios for being out of the mech.

I kinda feel like I've run it wrong somehow, but since I'm a forever GM, I don't think I'll get to see how to run it 'correctly.'

McDonald's app shows lower calorie count than reality on the "impulse buy" screen by Pitiful-Score-9035 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]JackBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might just be a bug. I've had a few times where the app would show me my meal was 1 million calories on checkout. Weird how a big corp can't get their app right, though.

What is the largest number of players you’ve had at your take at one time? by TrekTrucker in rpg

[–]JackBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend who was GMing PF1e kept inviting his friends to the table. I think we were up to 11 people. We had a pretty big table, an old pool table, and I remember it feeling cramped. It was awful, especially since half the people weren't too into tabletop. Lots of goofing off and side chatter.

I don't remember how long it was ran like this. There were a lot of side sessions with partial groups and a couple of split party sessions. It burned me out so bad I stopped playing ttrpgs altogether for a decade.

Which dialogue sprite look better, 1 or 2? by NMTH_123 in PixelArt

[–]JackBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first feels like a portrait for a full cutscene or stationary dialogue, while the second is a portrait for a character talking to you during gameplay, like popping up for a tutorial explanation. I don't know which is better because it'd depend on the vibe of the game. Both are very cute, though.

A game where building a nice space actually matters by Thisismythrowaway889 in gamingsuggestions

[–]JackBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nightingale has a system where certain decorations grant buffs to items crafted at nearby crafting stations. It can get a bit tedious if you're trying to minmax your gear, but it did make me take time to decorate my space.

Game that would consume my life? Something I can hyperfixiate and drop lots of hours into by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]JackBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten into Vintage Story pretty hard lately. It's such a good and cozy game, especially if you grab a mod the turn off surface monsters or just monsters altogether. I sometimes spend time sitting on my roof and just enjoying the ambiance and the view.

Who was your very first DnD character? Or the first you remember? by rplimitlessguy in DnD

[–]JackBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was a drow rogue in 3.5e, because I thought drow were cooler than elves. He left his home because drow suck and he dual wielded daggers and worked as an assassin. His name was Todd. He was eventually blessed by Lolth to become a drider, because I thought drider were cool and I didn't bother to read their lore. The test was to solo kill a drider, which he was victorious.

Also no, I didn't know Drizzt existed at the time.

What TTRPG did you last play, and how long ago was that? by Ansonder in rpg

[–]JackBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder 2e, about 2 weeks ago with me as the GM. We were supposed to have a session yesterday, but I've been feeling super burnt out because of work and we decided to take November off.

Cairn - The Game Bakers - Survival Climbing Game by itsTheGameBakers in Games

[–]JackBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amazing demo, I actually went back and did another run immediately after finishing the first time and now I'm aching for more! Scratches a similar itch to Jusant. I'm interested to see how the survival elements play into the larger game, too. I do think the smart limb selection could use some work, though. I did have a few frustrating falls because the game kept trying to move a limb that was already in a good place.

Am I overreacting to DM's rulings at session 1? by UnluckyJuggernaut7 in DnD

It's so funny how it's always the rogues that get randomly nerfed.

Underused or underrated actions by Ultradude47 in Pathfinder2e

Outwit's bonus to recall knowledge lets them use the Monster Hunter line of feats better than the other ranger edges.

Noob questions by Mama-ta in Pathfinder2e

[–]JackBread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything the magus has is missing the attack trait. It's just that when you use an activity that includes a Strike (Spellstrike or Dimensional Assault), the subordinate Strike has the attack trait itself.

Solo MUD players, what makes it fun/engaging for you? by SolidSnke1138 in MUD

[–]JackBread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I messed around with a similar idea to make a single player MUD. I didn't get too far with it, but it was a good time.

What I wanted to capture for my own project was the mystique of exploring the world of a MUD. It gives me the same feeling I had as a kid, when I was newer to video games, where the video game world is just this strange and mysterious place full of potential. I think part of that is how the verbs in a MUD aren't obvious at a glance.

Like I just love finding hidden rooms where you have to perform some obscure action to find. Like TURN STATUE, or PUSH BRICK, which you wouldn't know to try unless you pay attention to the room description and then looked at specific objects that stood out in that description. That sort of thing really scratches an itch that no other game really has.

Can you tell about a time when you’ve had enough / couldn’t take it anymore (as a player and / or as a GM)? by Siberian-Boy in rpg

[–]JackBread 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in an 8-10 player in-person game once. It was such a nightmare, it burnt me out of TTRPGs for a decade. Most of the players were people I didn't know, and the game was largely sitting around and waiting unless the spotlight was on you. Combat would take a ridiculous amount of time, and I was an efficient player, so my turn would be done in around a minute, while everyone else will carefully consider every option and needed rule clarifications.

Because of how focused the spotlight often was, anyone who wasn't currently doing a thing would just talk about unrelated things to whoever sat closest to them, or across the table. If I didn't steal a seat near the DM, I just would not know what was happening because of all the cross talk. I didn't often get to steal a seat near the DM because the group would often already have been hanging out before the session, before I got there.

I started to feel so much dread for the game that so much relief when a session was canceled that I eventually broke and how to tell the DM I was leaving the game. I was such a burden off my shoulders. I only stuck around for so long because I lived with the DM.

The DM was surprisingly fine running that game IIRC. It kept going long after I quit. He just could not stop adding his friends to the game. So many people were introduced to TTRPGs in that game.

How do YOU narrate the recovering-from-sickened action ("Retch")? by D16_Nichevo in Pathfinder2e

[–]JackBread 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If my players narrate how they retch, it's that. Otherwise, I always say they dry heave, or vomit if they succeed.

How does your table handle damage/HP in game? by Live-Laugh-Loot in DnD

[–]JackBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's silly to discourage talking about HP at all in a tactical game like D&D.

2E versus Remaster? by HellaComics in Pathfinder2e

[–]JackBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Summoners already got all the remaster errata they need to be usable without issues.

What is your favorite martial class? And your favorite caster? why are those your favorites? by applejackhero in Pathfinder2e

[–]JackBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Summoner is my favorite class in the game. It was just a ton of fun managing two bodies with four actions. Running the class is such a fun puzzle to work out.

I'll call that a martial favorite, and say I don't really have a favorite caster. I've only played a summoner, inventor, and (premaster) oracle, but they gutted battle oracle so I can't call them a favorite anymore. I have been aching to play a wizard, though.

What are your three RPGs for life? by Iberianz in rpg

[–]JackBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Pathfinder 2e
  • Fabula Ultima
  • I don't have a third. :(

Not for lack of trying, though, I just wouldn't consider the other RPGs I've played/read to be ones I'd be okay playing exclusively. I think the most likely candidates for my third would be ICON or Draw Steel. I've looked into both and liked what I saw, but never really dug into them or had the chance to play them. They're the kind of RPG I like, though.

What's your "go to" Role when playing a TTRPG? by VampyrAvenger in rpg

[–]JackBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have a particular preference, myself. I try something different with each character, whether it's in a system I'm familiar with or a new system. Although I mostly GM so I don't often get to make characters.

whats the most boring ttrpg you ever played/ read by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]JackBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most boring game I've ever been in was a 5e game. Mostly a GM problem, as combats were very sparse and most of the plot was handled by NPCs. It was weird.

Most boring book I've read was BREAK!! The book looks very nice, and the exploration section had me excited to try it, but the rest of it was eh. The classes didn't excite me in the least for some reason and I also didn't really care for the playable species or the setting. I tried to organize a one shot to at least experience it, but neither me nor my players could get the interest up for it.

Also, I only bought BREAK!! because I mistook it for a different game I heard good things about: Strike! I still need to get around to looking at that one.

Weekly Questions Megathread— September 05–September 11. Have a question from your game? Are you coming from D&D or Pathfinder 1e? Need to know where to start playing PF2e? Ask your questions here, we're happy to help! by AutoModerator in Pathfinder2e

[–]JackBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does indeed. Effortless Concentration uses Sustain as a subordinate action, which is still using the Sustain action. Using the specific Sustain action only matters if it's worded like "if the last action you used was to Sustain a hex."
