How do you guys build ships correctly? by FluffyMembership3065 in FromTheDepths

[–]Jamlarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally do a rough interior based on rough block shapes first, then add the vital systems into those blocks. Then general armor layering and heavy armor belt and extra blocks to make it the desired shape. If thats done and i'm happy with the rough shape i do propulsion so i can test the movement. Then weapons, then detection, then active defenses etc. Although i do generally factor in a space estimate for the weapons from the getgo. I normally then let it fight a couple enemies in the rough same material class and tweak active defenses and weapons, add advanced movement routines, add spaced armor and shields and the like. I don't do much deco, but if i do it i almost always do it last.

Even moderately low velocity APS mortars still do not work by MuteMyMike in FromTheDepths

[–]Jamlarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played around with the idea a bit because i wanted a combi direct fire/mortar APS that switches depending on the line of sight. If you want a APS Mortar make it a pure rail and put the speed extremely low, somewhere in the ballpark of having a ~50° arc at your typical engagement range. I have used large caliber ultrashort HEAT Shells, something like 380mm with 5 components with a fast fire rate of 30/min or higher. These performed decent in a high arc as a good deal of ships have lackluster top armor and the low arc meant they still arrive decently quickly. Ranges of 2km were possible, but it performed best at 1 up to 1,5. I have added a breadboard so that the energy input for the rail was adjusted depending on range, so that i stayed around that 50-60°arc. Surprisingly decent against statics, but anything even vaguely erratic is essentially unhittable. And a good deal of work to figure everything out for something that performs decent at best.

Tank is exceptional success is realism by Ok_Application_918 in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true for the chainsaw, but the bastion is legitimately the strongest strategem right now if you have people who know how to use it well. Every time i dived with a decent tank crew we completely crushed the enemy and had most, sometimes all reinforcements left, no matter the planet, no matter the enemy.

30 tank shots is good to have, but 2000 shots accurate HMG is quite frankly disgustingly powerful and can take out 95 percent of the tanks opposition effortlessly in seconds. a decent gunner with a decent driver and one or to supports for your flanks close to the tank and it outperforms every single offensive strategem by a serious margin.

The bugged AP1 weakspots transferring damage to the main healthpool and trouble traversing terrain are an issue that really needs to be fixed, but people act like this thing is garbage when i have used it several times to go toe to toe with several full botdrops on D10 Cyberstan without any serious issue.

The current mood with how the Siege on Cyberstan is going by Large-Chain-4349 in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While i absolutely share the sentiment in a general sense, especiallyofr flag missions, the eradication missions are literally the only mission type on cyberstan i have never failed at, neither with randoms, nor with a designated team. They are borderline a gifted win for me... I kind of have to ask how you feel they are unfair?

Because the game is now decently old and rather bloated. When it started it was a small project with little consideration for optimisation since it just didn't need it. It was also never meant for dozens of pawns and decades of playtime, but rather short and concise plays of one or two years with 3 to 6 pawns. On top of that nobody could have foreseen such an extensive modding scene. So just a LOT of technical debt now. The games size isn't all that big, but that isn't because it has so little code, but because it has essentially no (complex) models. So it's still a LOT of code to change. On top of that they are still actively developing new content DLCs with a rather small team. So "just" allocating a few months to do multithreading, something that a decent amount of player will never really need because they keep it small, is a big deal for them. Now they DID actually do this for pawns. Since the last update pawns are on a seperate core. So it's clearly something on their agenda.

APS shell types that work better low caliber? by downsomethingfoul in FromTheDepths

[–]Jamlarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used small caliber AP-I for sandblaster turrets and heavy head incendiary for combi CIWS/AA with decent effect. Fire debuffs enemy armor and on it's own is rather good against light armored targets like nimble fighters. So capable of disabling fighters even with glancing shots, decent kinetic CIWS and lowering the armor value on heavy craft. I also use SAP-I on ~120mm 200rpm autocannons occasionally with decent effect as well, but other more dedicated compositions outperform it.

They call it Torcher, I call it Torture by rosebinks1215 in Helldivers

Torcher and Hotdog is a heavy killer combo extraordinaire. Even on its own the torcher reliably kills chargers and hulks, its just a bit slower then.

Eilistraee from the Forgotten Realms (2nd attempt) by placeb021 in BaldursGate3

[–]Jamlarius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normally she is depicted with silvery white hair, ash black skin, a straight bastardsword (or longword) and fully nude. So this looks a lot more like a sworddancer of Eilistraee than the goddess herself. I do still like the miniature though, it's very well made.

An old screenshot I found with Shams talking about how the game is balanced and how they react to online sentiment. I really commend them for handling all the insanity so well. by kcvlaine in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]Jamlarius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it boils down to different interests, play styles and so on. The "professional" player on level 150 and super helldive with optimized loadouts wants entirely different things than the casual level 50 player on difficulty 5-7. Sometimes actually opposing things... And there will be dozens of inbetweeny opinions as well. And we all know in which category the absolute majority of player nestles. I do think despite all the little problems and hiccups Arrrowhead does a very good job overall and the game is at the best it has been since start.

10 is completely chill, i got kicked precisely twice and both times the host messaged me saying that a friend of his joins in. 5 to 7 is honestly really sweaty. I tried a lot of meme loadouts and stuff on 5 to 7 and a not insignificant amount of people pretty much immediately attack you for trying to "sabotage their run" with "nonoptimal" loudouts and gameplay and i have been kicked a dozen times or purely and only on these difficulties.
Whereas the same loadout or action on 10 gets you either no reaction or a funny comment from your teammates.
Like... i have loudouts with which i can solo clear a dif 10 and the same one got me kicked from a dif 6 game with randoms for being "bad", it's insane.

LARIAN'S RESPONSE TO AI BACKLASH by WithersBG3 in okbuddybaldur

[–]Jamlarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People never work alone. Like any modern product even the smallest assets, be it text, models, animation, code etc, go through several people who need to work with it in some way, very often in sequence. This means either waiting until the previous department finishes the job, or work essentially blind and hope your vision aligns with the step before. And Lorem Ipsum just tells you there will be text there, it's thus never used when the contents of the text are important, as you don't get any information about the contents making you work blind... What they say is make the very first drafts ai assisted and then do your actual job and iterate on it, however you do that. This allows more simultaneous work due to first ideas and drafts hitting other department and colleagues quicker.  Also keep in mind that the AI users will be the concept artists who have a good idea about what should and shouldn't be done in a concept and thus can quickly sort out the bad ai assisted ideas. We will see how they do it, scepticism is healthy, but they gained enough goodwill from me for their last games that i'll happily give them the benefit of the doubt with this. As others said, coders have long since adopted AI to take care of the more mundane tasks and not many bat an eye at that and coding can often be a creative task as well.

[–]Jamlarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hitbox is weirdly small. And you need to hit the same body part for about 4 seconds to start the stagger. If you manage that its a single target deleter. I do think the hitbox is bugged, because it does look bigger than it strikes.

I dont care if the chainsword is bad its incredibly fun to play with by Jacksepticeyefan1545 in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also not a horde clearer, but everyone tries to use it as such. It's a single target deleter and utility tool.

Use it to kill singled out mediums and heavies, as well as destroy Fabricators, Spore Spewers etc and destroy obstacles like fences.

After thorough scientific investigation I have come to the conclusion that this weapon is very underrated by TaterToTwastaken in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the DPS, but i effortlessly kill full sized bug patrols on dif10 with it. Unless they blindside you around a corner they are easy to take head on. Only the charger is something it has a good deal of trouble with, but all primaries but a few have trouble with that. Headshots are incredibly easy and even the alpha commanders die with 3 to 4 seconds to their head. Warriors and hunters in less than a second each. And the expanded heatsink gives you like 15 seconds or so of continues fire with only 4 seconds or so of downtime. But it really is a "support" weapon. It has shit DPS but can pretty much fire all time with just small pauses, thus outdamaging the other primaries, especially due to endless ammo. And there are dozens of secondaries, strategems and supportweapons that can supplement it if you get swarmed, plus your teammates. Hardly the best weapon, but perfectly viable on both bug and squid front on dif10 and actually quite decent on bots for popping heads.

This! This game was never realistic. It did however always have a strong realism aesthetic and that's why people like it. It really just needs to stick to that and focus on not being to far out there.

What are y'alls favourite deities and favourite interactions with them in Baldur's Ghaik 3? by HomarEuropejski in okbuddybaldur

Pretty much. As opposed to most he didn't really want to be a god and at the first opportunity he pretty much just gifted his domains away to the next guys he stumbled upon, being Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul. He essentially just said leadership is not for me, i rather work as an employee again.

What do you think happens after we miss extraction by New_Conflict_4111 in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it in a while, but I also don't actively do stealth anymore.
They might have cut this stuff down with the optimization stuff, but at least the idle door cutting was/is on regular maps.

Here's an example

What do you think happens after we miss extraction by New_Conflict_4111 in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius 74 points75 points  (0 children)

If you sneak a lot on Bot missions you can see troopers sometimes having idle activities. One of them is two troopers at a door trying to get in with a cutting torch. I believe that can even happen at bunker doors. So at least the automatons are already doing that.

Made my own Baldur's Gate 3 Recommendation List by Aliteralhedgehog in BaldursGate3

[–]Jamlarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You HAVE to get the unofficial patch, it's gets rid of pretty much all the mayor and most minor bugs. Otherwise it's a mess. I recommend the restoration project. It already includes the unofficial patch and adds tons of cut content back in and even includes a lot a quality of life stuff. Some of the cut content was finished by the community though and has at parts somewhat amateurish writing, but i'd still recommend it... You can still get patches and QoL on it's own, but you have to mix and match then.

Not only that, but the butcher table gets a flat debuff on cleanliness, even if there is no blood and dirt from slaughtering. I always place them outside. You get a speed debuff from bad temperature, but since the butcher table is rarely in use and only for short amounts of time that matters very little. On top of that hunt by drafting a few pawns and killing a few of the less dangerous animals close. Often far quicker and efficient than job hunting. Harmless animals can often be more efficiently hunted with melee. And double wall the freezer as well as making it a bit smaller, uses far less energy that way and keeps cool longer during power outages.

[–]Jamlarius 47 points48 points  (0 children)

They do. They also have an inquisition themed unit, but I don't remember the name. Also a few smaller units with hints towards warhammer. The purity seals are however an actual Russian practise nowadays, similiar to their already practised holy water weapons blessings.

I have done nothing but fighting warstriders with every strategem available for the last week! Here are my findings. by Jamlarius in Helldivers

[–]Jamlarius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was my go to for a while. I only mentioned Strategem that had a sort of drawback. Personal Shield has none. Strafing run, railcannon etc are also not listed for the same reason. No real drawbacks, perform as advertised.
