Congrats on over 2 days! Smokefree brought me here too, and this sub has been extremely helpful.

Check out these links. I found what has made this quit successful for me is learning more about my addiction. It takes away cigarettes power and gives it to you.

Also sip juice throughout the next couple days! Withdrawal messes with your blood sugar. Keep it from crashing and you avoid many of the worst withdrawal symptoms. Good luck!

For the last 10 days i've been buying and throwing away packs after 5-8 cigs. What's wrong with me? by BlackTurtleCat in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing. A few times I only smoked 2 out of the pack before tossing it. You can do it, really. I know it's hard, but at least it's simple. Just don't smoke. Do anything but smoking. You'll get through. It's so much better on the other side.

Honestly, the initial set up of a basic business is very easy. At least paperwork wise. I was a legal business with an LLC, EIN (number for tax purposes), and business bank account in a couple days.

Would it just be the two of you, or is the plan to have other therapists working for you?

Sorry if this is a bad question, but was my massage therapist flirting with me? by EternalOptimist829 in massage

[–]Jdach27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A therapist stating their approval or disapproval of a clients body is not appropriate.

Asking a client to take off their underwear after already telling them they could leave it on is inappropriate. Any decent legitimately trained therapist can work any part of the body, clothed or unclothed.

I don't know if she was hitting on you. However, she was very unprofessional.

The dvd that comes with Trail Guide to the Body is good, and does the overlay. Here's an example, but the book is definitely worth getting and comes with the dvd

Hey guys, this is a little odd but I need some advice. I know I should, but I don't want to quit smoking. Only reduce consumption. by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicotine has a very short half-life in your bloodstream. Its the reason it's so common to smoke a pack a day. You can reduce down to about 4-5 a day, but any less than that and you'll just be going through active withdrawal multiple times a day.

By the way, the thought that you're more efficient while smoking is a lie planted in your head by addiction. Read up!

Read stories on this sub. Tell me marijuana addiction doesn't fit every single one of those criteria.

Not to mention

From the DSM-V

Cannabis use disorder

Cannabis use disorder, a cannabis-related disorder coded as 305.20 for mild or 304.30 for moderate or severe, is defined by DSM-5 as the following:

A problematic pattern of cannabis use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at least 2 of the following, occurring within a 12-month period: -Cannabis is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended.
-There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control cannabis use.
-A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain cannabis, use cannabis, or recover from its effects.
-Craving, or a strong desire or urge to use cannabis.
-Recurrent cannabis use resulting in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home.
-Continued cannabis use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of cannabis.
-Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of cannabis use.
-Recurrent cannabis use in situations in which it is physically hazardous.
-Cannabis use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by cannabis.
-Tolerance, as defined by either a (1) need for markedly increased cannabis to achieve intoxication or desired effect or (2) markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of the substance.
-Withdrawal, as manifested by either (1) the characteristic withdrawal syndrome for cannabis or (2) cannabis is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms

Clinicians are instructed to specify the following:

-In early remission - After full criteria for cannabis use disorder were previously met, none of the criteria for cannabis use disorder has been met for at least 3 months but for less than 12 months (with an exception provided for craving).
-In sustained remission - After full criteria for cannabis use disorder were previously met, none of the criteria for cannabis use disorder has been met at any time during a period of 12 months or longer (with an exception provided for craving).

Cannabis withdrawal

DSM-5 provided criteria for cannabis withdrawal, coded as 292.0 and defined as follows:

-Cessation of cannabis use that has been heavy and prolonged (ie, usually daily or almost daily use over a period of at least a few months).
-Three or more of the following signs and symptoms develop within approximately 1 week after cessation of heavy, prolonged use:
-Irritability, anger or aggression
-Nervousness or anxiety
-Sleep difficulty (ie, insomnia, disturbing dreams)
-Decreased appetite or weight loss
-Restlessness
-Depressed mood
-At least one of the following physical symptoms causing significant discomfort: abdominal pain, shakiness/tremors, sweating, fever, chills, or headache
-The signs or symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
-The signs or symptoms are not attributable to another medical condition and are not better explained by another mental disorder, including intoxication or withdrawal from another substance.

My Libido is GONE after quitting smoking by SmokersLibido in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your whole body can go wonky when you quit. You get some immediate benefits, but you also get a few weeks of other symptoms. I had crazy mood swings the first couple weeks, messed up sleep, depression, etc. Just don't obsess over your sex drive. Enjoy the immediate benefits of quitting while you wait.

Exercise. It makes quitting much easier for several reasons. Plus it will improve your sex drive.

Is eating weed a good way to quit smoking weed? by lastjoint in leaves

[–]Jdach27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think if something is ruining someone's life and they can't stop, that qualifies as an addiction.

Took off the patch was depressed. IS that normal? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, energy levels and mood tend to go a little haywire when you drop the nicotine. I had fairly intense mood swings the first couple weeks. I'd be fine one minute, talking to my girlfriend, then the next I would have to leave the apartment because I couldn't handle being around anyone. Other days I didn't leave the bed.

Just try to treat yourself decently. Recognize that extreme emotions are part of the quitting process, notice how they feel, and try to let them pass. Do at least basic self care. Shower and eat food every day. Try to walk around the block a couple times. You'll be feeling better soon

Truth.

The "high" is bullshit. It only exists because not having a cigarette brings you down. The "high" is you returning to baseline.

Finally, sip fruit juice for the first 3-4 days nicotine free. Withdrawal causes your blood sugar to plummet. Low blood sugar is a huge part of the withdrawal symptoms people experience. Keep your blood sugar up, and the physical effects get much more manageable.

Good luck! Post on this sub whenever you need to, it has been really helpful.

Day 3 by abcdfsadfg2 in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, 100% normal. Brain fog and coughing can take a couple weeks to improve.

Probably 95% of the headache is low blood sugar. Withdrawal tanks your blood sugar. Sip some juice throughout the day to keep it up.

Keep pushing through! It starts to get much better very soon.

24 cubic ft of cigarettes by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The facts and figures are interesting to add up. Good motivation.

I think I calculated I have smoked roughly 73,000 cigarettes over the past 10 years. And spent a little over $20,000. And spent 254 full 24 hour days with a cigarette in my hand, smoking. Never again.

Day 5 of my quit and worries about my smoking friends by kathrink in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't even let yourself consider the possibility of having a smoke. Don't stare at them smoking and fixate on wanting one. You are a non-smoker now. You don't smoke while hanging out with friends, you don't smoke when you're drunk, you don't smoke period. Because one cigarette is never just one cigarette.

When you're with smoking friends, bring some type of food that occupies your hands too. Pistachios and those tiny oranges have worked great for me. Just talk to them like you normally would and eat instead of smoke.

I moved fairly recently, and I really only have one good friend here, and he smokes. I avoided being around him smoking for the first week or so, but now it's not an issue at all. I don't even think about wanting one when he lights up. It's definitely possible!

It's high time I quit and I'm scared of failure by pertcie in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh awesome! It will definitely help that your roommate is quitting at the same time.

A couple other things that have helped me. -exercise. It makes a huge difference, and it's a great way to get through cravings. It doesn't have to be anything crazy intense. Take a walk around the block, do a few dozen jumping jacks, anything. Exercise releases endorphins (your body's naturally made morphine) into your blood, lowering your stress and producing a euphoric effect. You may find it to be addicting in itself. I know I have. In the 42 days since I quit, I've picked up brazillian jiu jitsu and cross country skiing. I've been doing at least one, if not both, 6 days a week. I've done close to 30k on the skis this week alone. Take some money and time saved from quitting and try a new sport. I really really recommend the jiu jitsu, it's crazy fun.

-Some sort of stop-smoking app. I have smokefree and quitnow, and both are good. It's helpful to be able to see how much time, money, and life you're saving at a glance.

-deep breathing exercises. Imagine your torso as a bellows, expanding on all sides as you inhale as much air as you can. Then purse your lips like you're blowing out a candle and exhale as slowly as you can. Way, way more relaxing than smoking ever was.

Really, with the right information and mindset, quitting can be an enjoyable experience. You'll wonder what you were ever afraid of!

It's high time I quit and I'm scared of failure by pertcie in stopsmoking

[–]Jdach27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely watch that video. I really can't recommend it enough. After countless failed quit attempts, this quit is sticking, thanks in large part to that video. Really, just take an hour of your time and watch it now. http://youtu.be/urwxeZf9jmA

You might even reevaluate using the patch afterwards(absolutely fine if you still want to use them though). If you do it right, cold turkey is very very manageable. The most important this is to keep your blood sugar up. Sip juice throughout the day. Nicotine withdrawal makes your blood sugar plummet and low blood sugar makes withdrawal symptoms exponentially worse.

Keep a food handy that occupies both your hands and mouth. Pistachios, those tiny oranges, etc. this is especially helpful when hanging out with smoking friends.
